By ME!

Darrell Waltrip always says "Don't beat yourself." He says it so often it almost gets annoying, but then somebody does a royal job of beating themselves and he looks like a braniac. Twice this year, the guy beating himself has been Tony. Whether or not he could beat Matt Kenseth or Jimmie Johnson, he had at least a third place car but got over-anxious racing Kyle Busch and hit the SAFER barrier at the exit of turn four, starting a slow leak in his right rear tire. The tire blew three laps from the end, but fortunately a yellow flag caused by debris (Any of the conspiracy theorists want to start on Hamlin running into Kenny Wallace?) kept him on the lead lap, albeit in 28th, two cars from the end (speeding penalties for Jeremy Mayfield and Dale Earnhardt Jr). He managed to work his way to 21st in the two laps and gained three spots in the standings, to 19th, but he could've been third, fourth, maybe even first. Just as with the Daytona 500, in which there's little doubt in my mind he cost himself the win, he cost himself a great finish in Sunday that could've really helped the team rebound from their Fontana woes. Now they go to Atlanta 236 points behind Sunday winner Johnson desperately needing a good result after back to back good showings with nothing to show for it.

If Tony cools down, which I'm sure he will, and starts focusing like he did last year, which I'm sure he will, Stewart fans are still in for an awesome season. The fear was that the Home Depot Monte Carlo SS might not be competitive on the big mile and a half to two mile speedways. Instead, its been the class of the Bowtie Brigade in the first two races on those such tracks, although the blown engine at Fontana and afore mentioned troubles Sunday allowed Jimmie Johnson to lead the Chevy contingent home. It can't last though. Eventually Big Orange is going to have the results to match its incredible performances and that other home improvement car is going to be Big Blue (Knowwhuddamean?). The car is there, the motor is there (Despite the engine problems in Fontana), the team is there, and certainly the driver is there despite a couple of incidents so far in the very young season that have potentially robbed the team of the two wins taken by their biggest rival right now. Once the kink or two still left get straightened out, unbiased, I can say we may see a 20 team better than the one that finshed in the top ten in 19 of the last 22 races last year.

On another note, it was great to see Ira-Jo Hussey back going over the wall. Jeff Chandler did a respectable, if not admirable (Mistakes will be made though, that happens in racing especially after a long layoff) job coming out of retirement to allow Ira-Jo to recover from his off season surgery. The other members of the 20 team haven't missed a beat from last season, even with the addition of Jason Lee as jackman, replacing longtime jackman Chuck White in the off season. Seems like just as a year ago, they may not be the fastest, but Tom Dean and Jody Fortson are getting the tires out there, Jeff and now Ira-Jo and Todd Foster are getting them on, Jason is getting the car up, and Gooch and Shaggy (Jeff Patterson and Brian Larson) are getting the gas and catchcan jobs done in the time that's going to keep Smoke right in the hunt all year long. Its going to be a great season, even though there's been a couple hickups so far.

Next week, Tony and everybody else return to my home track, the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Tony struggled mightily in the March race and at the October race (Which was my first race I attended) he wasn't quite on par with his previous performances, though he managed a ninth place finish. If Big Orange drives like it has the last two weeks and Tony stays out of trouble, he might have Georgia on his Mind for a second time, which would definately make me happy. Just finishing in the top five and beating that 48 car would leave me contented enough, though.
