Could Button Go into One-Year Sabbatical?

Reports in the European press claim that Jenson Button has threatened to stop driving in Formula 1 for a year if Williams does not release him from his 2006 contract with the squad. Button wants to stay at his current BAR-Honda team.

JB's latest offer to convince Sir Frank to let him go would include paying Williams the amount the team agreed to give Button as salary for the next two seasons: $16 million, or $8m annually.

Of course, Button would have that kind of spare cash from a new Honda contract, reportedly in the vicinity of $88m (that's no typo) for the next five years.

So far, however, Williams has not wavered on its position that it has a legal contract to have Button through 2007, and is willing to fight in court to usufruct the 25-year-old's services from '06 onwards.

Formula 1 "supremo" Bernie Ecclestone dismissed the notion of Button's sabbatical as nonsense, however.

"There's no danger of that happening," he told Britain's Mirror newspaper. "He has a contract [and] we need a British driver in F1."
