Kimi Reignites Title Hopes with Hungary Win

Luck finally smiled Kimi Raikkonen’s way at the Hungaroring this Sunday, with McLaren’s Finn taking his fourth win of 2005 while championship points leader Fernando Alonso failed to score any points. Polesitter Michael Schumacher finished second for Ferrari, closely followed by his brother Ralf. It was the maiden 2005 podium for the Toyota driver.

Kimi’s luck first showed up at the race’s tumultuous start, when he outmuscled teammate Juan Pablo Montoya and outside pole starter Jarno Trulli to chase only Schumacher by lap two - a best-case scenario for the Finn, as himself and Schuey were the only frontrunners set for a three-stop strategy.

As it had happened in Germany last week, the first 2.49 miles of the race were action-packed: Red Bull’s Christian Klien rolled over spectacularly after banging wheels with Jacques Villeneuve’s Sauber on Turn One, Rubens Barrichello shredded his Ferrari’s front wing against Jarno Trulli’s gearbox, and, crucially for Raikkonen and the championship, Ralf Schumacher’s right-rear wheel ran over Alonso’s left-front wing also at Turn One.

The damaged nose on the Spaniard’s R25 accounted for a second spectacular Red Bull moment: Alonso’s wing detached from the car some half a lap later, and David Coulthard was unable to avoid the large piece of carbon-fiber sitting on the middle of the track. His RB1’s right-front suspension was demolished with the impact, and the Scot came to a halt at the runoff area after a couple of high-speed spins.

Alonso and Barrichello’s hopes for a good finish were thus instantly dashed, as both men needed unscheduled pit stops on lap two. By then, Schumacher, Raikkonen and Montoya occupied the top-three, followed by Trulli, Ralf, Button, Sato and Heidfeld.

When Raikkonen confirmed his three-stop strategy by pitting on the 11th lap (at that moment, Alonso was still behind Robert Doornbos’ Minardi), and Schumacher did the same four laps later, it became clear that this was to be Juan Pablo Montoya’s race, as the Colombian would make one stop less than the cars ahead of him.

After a string of disappointing results, both Williams walked away with points as Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber took positions six and seven, while BAR’s Takuma Sato salvaged the final Hungaroring point to score for the first time this season.

A bad start and two off-road excursions relegated Giancarlo Fisichella to ninth, one position ahead of Barrichello. Alonso was 11th, marking Renault’s first scoreless haul of the year not provoked by DNFs - USGP aside, the team came away with no points only in Canada, where Alonso crashed and Fisi had hydraulic problems.

"All our chances of scoring were over at the first corner when I lost my front wing," Alonso lamented. "I was pretty unlucky in that incident. The starts are always difficult with Ralf because he always surprises you with all the moves he makes, but we knew the start would be complicated and these things can happen..."

In spite of the fairytale ending for Raikkonen, however, a serious challenge to Alonso’s title remains a very tall order. With six races left and a maximum of 60 points available, the Finn now trails the Spaniard by 26, meaning Alonso only needs to finish third every time if Raikkonen wins all remaining GPs.

"It looks better now than after the last race but it's just unlucky that we always seem to throw away 10 points and then Alonso gets it and the next race we get it back," Raikkonen reckoned. "We are just going backwards and forwards the whole time. But there are still six races to go and if we can do this kind of result and maybe something happens to him we can still fight for the Championship."

The catch is, Renault never showed the pace to threaten for a podium throughout the Hungarian GP weekend, this in a circuit widely regarded as favoring its R25’s characteristics… If Raikkonen’s MP4-20 can stay in one piece and hold its dominant speed in the next races, there may still be a fight for the 2005 driver’s title after all.

No, but I have been a fan of Kimi and Nick since back in 2001 when they both ran with Sauber.
