Schumacher Takes First Pole of 2005 in Hungary

Schuey is now a single pole shy of Ayrton Senna's all-time record. (LAT Photo)Ferrari led a competitive, full-field Formula 1 session for the first time this season, with Michael Schumacher taking his and the squad’s maiden 2005 pole position at the Hungaroring today.
Schuey broke through his pole-less streak in style, beating McLaren’s Juan Pablo Montoya by a massive 0.897 - thus automatically raising eyebrows regarding how light his F2005 is. In addition, the German’s feat put him just one pole position shy of the last major F1 record he doesn't yet own, Ayrton Senna’s mark of 65 career P1 starts.
Toyota’s Jarno Trulli showed his usual qualifying poise by taking the third spot. He will share row number two with McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen, who despite being the first car out on the - very hot (115 degrees) - track, lagged just one-tenth of a second behind teammate Montoya.
Ralf Schumacher completed the top-five in the second Toyota, while championship points leader and virtual 2005 champ Fernando Alonso made a couple of minor mistakes in his flying lap and had to settle for sixth.
Ferrari’s Rubens Barrichello, now believed to be on the verge of leaving the scarlet team - for a BAR seat - in 2006, took P7. The current BAR duo of Jenson Button and Takuma Sato placed eighth and tenth respectively, being split by the Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella.
"It is a little bit of a surprise to us as well, honestly, was a surprise to be as slow recently," Schumacher said afterwards. "We have changed the tires substantially and it paid off. We have to find out if it is a combination of many things or a general trend to be established, but I am pretty confident."
Since it only supplies Jordan and Minardi other than Ferrari, Schuey's result was also Bridgestone's first pole of the season: "A big compliment to Bridgestone - I think they had to suffer a lot this season so far and this is a big reward for the effort they have been putting in," concluded the German.
