Barrichello Set for Two-Year Deal with BAR

According to compatriot Nelson Piquet, Rubens Barrichello will trade Ferrari for BAR-Honda beginning next year, likely replacing the Williams-bound Jenson Button.

Piquet, a three-time F1 world champion who is in Hungary overseeing his son Nelson Jr’s GP2 Series efforts, made the revelation to Brazilian newspaper Estado de Sao Paulo.

“You can write it down: Rubens has signed with BAR for two years,” he was quoted as saying. “I’m well-connected [at Honda],” added Piquet, who won the 1987 title aboard a Honda-powered Williams.

Neither side - BAR or Barrichello - is confirming the deal, but the report claims an announcement is expected for next week. Rubens, who has a cold relationship with Piquet, limited himself to saying that “Nelson seems to know more than I do.”

Adding fuel to the fire, however, BAR sporting director and close Barrichello friend Gil de Ferran admitted that “Rubinho is a driver capable of fighting for the championship, so obviously he’s of interest to us.”

If BAR does manage to retain Button, Takuma Sato would be the one needing to look elsewhere, as the Japanese's erratic performances do not match Honda's intent of battling for overall driver and constructor honors next year.

Barrichello’s departure from Ferrari also detonates a dispute for the position of Michael Schumacher’s teammate. Early favorites for the seat are Sauber’s Felipe Massa - who’s managed by Jean Todt’s son Nicolas - David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella.

Team principal Todt has never hidden his predilection for McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen, but with Schuey contracted through ‘06 with the scarlet squad, it’s unlikely the Finn would want to partner the seven-times world champion next year.

It was supposed to be an R in parentheses like the Rubens Barrichello (L) part but since our board does that, it shows up like ®.

I know. This is all assuming that Barrichello leaves.

I think Webber is staying with Williams, but there are alot of good names that could go to Ferrari. Feilipe Masa from Sauber is looking good, and Anthony Davidson, BAR test driver, is fast too.

Oh and Dan Wheldon says F1 teams are talking to him, maybe Ferrari? And Sebastian Bourdais says his asparations are to go to F1 if he can be with a good team.

I watched a little of qualifying this morning (Jaques Villenueve, Jarno Trulli, and Christijan Albers runs) and Bob Varsha brought up that with BMW taking over Sauber as their Factory effort, the German Nick Heidfeld would likely follow them there.

Yeah I figured that. If it weren't for BMW he wouldn't have the Williams seat.

Barrichello: BAR Rumors Bringing Confusion
Written by: Cassio Cortes Budapest, Hungary – 8/1/2005

After the BAR rumors emerged, Ferrari's mechanics keep asking Barrichello about his future, the Brazilian complained. (LAT Photo)

Rubens Barrichello’s expected move to BAR for next season has so far brought more headaches than joy, according to the Brazilian. The deal was first revealed by the Brazilian’s compatriot, three-time world champion Nelson Piquet, with whom Barrichello has a rather cold relationship. Piquet claimed his revelation that Rubens has already signed a two-year deal with the Honda-powered team came from his connections inside the Japanese automaker.

“This story has created problems inside the team,” Barrichello complained to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. “Some mechanics and engineers – with whom I have a great relationship, we are like a family – couldn't avoid asking me questions: If it's true that I'm leaving, why, what happened?

“These are things that don’t help during a race. If I’ll have to say something about my future, I’ll do it at the right time. Now I’d prefer not to hear about it any more.”

Often criticized in the Brazilian press by Piquet, Rubens took the opportunity to hit back at Nelson: “Why did Piquet have to come up with this story? Wouldn’t it be better if he followed his son [Nelson Jr] in GP2, who by the way doesn't seem to be doing too well?”

BAR’s position so far has been the same of everyone else involved in the deal: silence.

"A lot has been said over the weekend but we have no comment about the driver lineup for next year yet," said sporting director Gil de Ferran.

An official announcement about Barrichello’s future plans should happen during the three-week “summer break” before the Turkish GP on August 21.

Jaun Pablo might, since he hasn't exactly been that good this year.

Oh God, imagine Montoya and Schumacher team mates. :o

JPM's had a good year, minus his tennis injury. Won a few weeks ago and might end up helping Kimi win the championship and Mercedes the constructors championship. 2 times he's started at the back and gotten into the top 3 or 4 only to just run out of time.

Anyone that can understand his interviews with ease is incredible.

He's still probably my favorite F1 driver though.
