Ganassi Racing fires IRL driver

Star reports

Darren Manning, one of the Indy Racing League drivers struggling this season with Indianapolis-based Ganassi Racing, was fired today.

Manning, 29, was tops among Chip Ganassi's drivers in points, but he was 13th overall. Scott Dixon is 16th with rookie Ryan Briscoe 17th. Manning did not have a top-five finish this season. The three drivers have combined for at least 12 accidents this season.

Manning, a former Formula One test driver, finished 11th in the IRL last season.

A replacement driver was not immediately named. It's possible the team will only run two cars at this weekend's race at Michigan International Speedway.

Yes. He's never had a driver leave on good terms with him.

That's sorta surprising, not that he was fired, but that Briscoe lasted longer than him.

Jaques Lazier joins Ganassi for MIS

By Dave Lewandowski

Jaques Lazier will join his brother Buddy on the same track for the second time this season.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing announced that IndyCar Series veteran Jaques Lazier will drive the No.10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Toyota-powered Panoz in the Firestone Indy 400 on July 31 at Michigan International Speedway.

"We were very glad that a driver of Jaques Lazier’s caliber was available to the Target team this weekend," Target Chip Ganassi Racing owner Chip Ganassi said in a statement. "We look forward to working with him on a race-to-race basis and getting him to the front."

Lazier, who has made 45 career IndyCar Series starts, finished 16th in the Indianapolis 500 in May. Lazier won at Chicagoland Speedway in 2001 and drove a limited schedule for Patrick Racing last season. Buddy Lazier, the 2000 IndyCar Series champion and 1996 Indianapolis 500 winner, is entered in the No. 95 Pennzoil Panther Racing Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone. In the past three seasons, the brothers have competed together in the Indianapolis 500 (Jaques as Robby Gordon's relief driver in 2004) and at Kansas and Nazareth speedways in 2003.

"Honestly, from the second this team came into the IRL, I've always wanted to drive for them," Jaques Lazier said. "The professionalism that this team demonstrates every time it is on the track is absolutely spectacular. Everything about this team is first class. That's the kind of team that every driver dreams to be a part of. Obviously we're running a race-to-race deal. I just hope I can be what they're looking for and put a spark back to the team and get them back to the prominent position that they're used to being."

Lazier is replacing Darren Manning, who was released earlier in the week. Lazier drove for Playa del Racing in the 89th Indianapolis 500, and the team still has plans to enter at least one of the six remaining races.

Lazier is not new to the Panoz-Toyota combination. The Vail, Colo., native also competed with the Toyota engine and Panoz chassis earlier this season at Indianapolis should make for an easy transition into the Target team-prepared machine.

"We’re happy to be able to add an American driver with a wealth of oval racing experience to our arsenal," team managing director Mike Hull said. "The Target team is looking forward and we hope the introduction of Jaques into our racing program will help stimulate our team’s performance."
