Fines likely over AGR’s Danica protest


Andretti Green Racing is likely to be fined for its boycott of Saturday’s autograph session in protest of what it perceives as the IRL’s preferential treatment of Danica Patrick.

IRL president and chief operating officer Brian Barnhart told The Indianapolis Star that punishment is expected for the incident, probably in the form of a fine. AGR’s four drivers – Tony Kanaan, Dan Wheldon, Dario Franchitti and Bryan Herta – walked out of the autograph session when the team noticed that a separate line was being used for Patrick.

“This is a very serious situation because the autograph session is vitally important as we try to reach out to the fans,” Barnhart said. “The attention Danica has drawn to this series – none of which she asked for – has risen the tide for all of our ships, and everyone needs to understand that.”

AGR officials said they notified IRL officials of their displeasure with the two-line procedure – one line for Patrick, the other for all the other IRL drivers – when it was applied in June during a race at Texas Motor Speedway. When they saw the same procedure being used at Milwaukee, AGR officials decided to pull the team’s drivers out of the mandatory autograph session and instead sign autographs at the team’s merchandise trailer.

“It’s a serious issue and we need to talk about it,” AGR co-owner Kevin Savoree said.

IRL marketing officials said demand for Patrick’s autograph is so high that the two-line procedure gives as many people as possible a chance to get her autograph, as well as that of other drivers. Patrick said she doesn’t know how to remedy the situation.

“I didn’t ask for this; I didn’t even ask for extra security here,” she told The Star. “I know it’s hard (for organizers), and I don’t know what can be done.”

Tension between AGR drivers and Patrick has been evident since the Indianapolis 500, when Patrick received far more attention for her fourth-place finish than Wheldon did for winning.

Earlier this season, Kanaan joked about a nationally circulated magazine in his native Brazil that devoted its cover to Patrick after the Indy 500. “I really need to congratulate this girl,” Kanaan said with a laugh. “We’ve been working for 22 years to get a single line in that magazine, and we’ve never been there. She finishes fourth at Indy and gets three pages.”


Briscoe’s “serious situation”

Target Chip Ganassi Racing officials said their decision to bench Ryan Briscoe for Sunday’s ABC Supply Co./A.J. Foyt 225 was a protective measure, not a punitive one.

Briscoe was cleared by IRL medical officials to compete in the race after he crashed during practice Saturday morning, but the team decided to withhold him from the race. The rookie is expected to return this weekend at Michigan International Speedway.

“It’s a serious situation,” said Mike Hull, the team’s managing director. “The guy has to be absolutely 100 percent when he drives one of these cars. There’s not a person on this earth that’s going to tell me that when a guy hits the wall hard that the next day he’s going to be 100 percent.”

Briscoe has crashed out of four of the first nine races this season, but has at times been noticeably faster than his teammates, Scott Dixon and Darren Manning. Briscoe also performed well in the IRL’s first street race in April at St. Petersburg before a controversial crash with Tony Kanaan.

After Saturday’s crash, Briscoe climbed from the car but appeared shaky. He sat on the car, then on the track before safety workers placed him on a stretcher and took him to the infield care center. He was cleared to drive, but the team withdrew the car.

Hull indicated that Briscoe wasn’t happy with the decision and wanted to return to the car and compete in the race.

“He’s a race driver in his heart, but sometimes he’s not a race driver in his head,” Hull said. “This is a tough place. He would have had to start at the back. He’s a quality guy and he might have been able to get to the front, but he decided it might be better to just race well at Michigan.”

Brutal heat


Seven spectators were treated for heat-related illnesses during Sunday’s race, which was held in 97-degree heat and 55 percent humidity.

Drivers said they were taxed by the stifling heat but not overly affected by it.

“I think we train hard enough, said Tomas Scheckter, who finished third behind Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti. “That also shows the guys who finish up at the top at the end. When it’s hot like that, if you’re physically fit, you’re mentally prepared for it and you can carry on pushing at 110 percent the whole way through the race. I train very, very hard. For me it wasn’t a problem.”

Instead of the heat, the wind offered a more severe challenge. Strong gusts, measured at more than 20mph, gave drivers fits, especially on the exit of the second turn.

“The wind would get under the rear wing into the middle of one and two and stick the thing sideways on you,” Franchitti said. “A couple of times I almost met the outside wall.”

None of the seven fans was hospitalized, but a crowd estimated at 28,600 battled to stay cool throughout the day.

“As soon as they strapped me in the car, I thought, ‘It’s bloody hot out here,’” Franchitti said. “It was very hot, but I have driven a lot physically harder races than what we experienced today. I think the only real factor for me was the heat, but it wasn’t out of the ordinary.”

Still, drenched drivers called it the worst heat they had experienced since an IRL race at California Speedway in 2003, when temperatures also reached the high 90s.

“It’s tough enough to get around this track when it’s 60 degrees let alone 100,” Hornish said. “It’s definitely the hottest I’ve experienced. I thought that California in 2003 was the hottest I could ever be after a race was over. This passed that by quite a bit.”

I've been watching NASCAR. I just got into Indy Car this year (no, Danica Mania did not influence me. I was thinking "Why the hell's she so special?" while watching the Indy 500)
