Edmonton Champ Car Notebook - Sunday

WILSON v. GLOCK, ROUND II

A little more than 24 hours after they clashed wheels at Turn Seven during qualifying, Justin Wilson and Timo Glock, er, renewed acquaintances at the same Turn Seven in the closing laps of the race. With similar results. Not only did Glock’s DHL Lola-Ford slam into the wall, but Wilson continued on largely unphased. And, as was the case in the first shunt, they both had diametrically opposed views to the cause of the accident.

“Wilson’s front-right tire touched my left rear, bumping me out of the race,” said Glock. “I don't know how he could have done all the stupid things he did this weekend, like spinning during a caution in the race and taking me out for the second time.”

“Again, he made a mistake at the same place as yesterday,” said Wilson. “I popped up the inside and he turned in on me like I wasn’t there. Early in the race, Paul (Tracy) and I had a pretty good battle there with no problems. We raced hard but we gave each other room. But with Timo, he doesn’t leave any room to race.”

The shunt ended what had been Glock’s best race of the season with Rocketsports, as he had come from ninth on the grid to fourth in the closing stages of the race, setting 10th-fastest lap of the race in the process.

SYMPATHY FOR A. J.

Doubtless it will do little to ease the crushing disappointment of allowing his first win to slip through his fingers, but during the post-race interview A.J. Allmendinger received a lot of support from some fellows who have been there before.

“I know how it feels to chase your first win and not achieve that,” said Sebastien Bourdais. “It happened to me the first two starts in 2003. I’m sure he's devastated. He probably deserved this one, he was fast all weekend long.”

“I know how he feels,” said Paul Tracy. “Remember in 1993 when I was leading by two laps at Phoenix and crashed? A.J. just needs to get that first win and then they’ll start coming in bunches.”

ANOTHER CHAMP CAR CANADIAN SUCCESS STORY

Once again, Canada proved to be fertile ground for the Champ Car World Series. Today’s announced attendance of 78,080 pushed the three-day gate to 200,052, which makes it the highest-attended Champ Car race weekend ever to be held in Canada. Which is saying something. The previous high was the inaugural Montreal Champ Car race in 2003, which attracted 172,000 over three days, while Toronto regularly tops the 160,000 mark. . . as did Vancouver in its 14-year history.

“People were saying over the winter this wasn't a place to have a race; it should have been another venue or in Vancouver,” said Paul Tracy. “It’s an unbelievable event. Greg (MacDonald) has done a great job, the promoter, did all the promotion. The guy’s a hard worker. He’s done a great job up here. I have to applaud the whole City of Edmonton for everything they've done for our sport, for Champ Car.”

“For a first-time event I have never seen anything like it,” said Jimmy Vasser, another driver who has seen his fair share of Champ Car events. “This is one of the most impressive events I have ever seen in my racing career. The promoters here in Edmonton did a fantastic job. The fans packed the stands and the fence line every day and they were so enthusiastic. It was just a great event for the fans in Edmonton and Champ Car."

Dominguez had his share of challenges en route to fifth. (LAT photo)

A GOOD FIFTH

Mario Dominguez was about as happy as a fifth-place finisher could be. After falling as low as tenth in the race, Dominguez worked his way back to the top five by dint of a mistake free drive on a day when many others could not say the same. That he did so under fierce pressure from Ronnie Bremer in the second half of the race made it all the more rewarding -- and welcome in the wake of DNFs in Cleveland and Toronto and crashes here in Edmonton on Friday and Saturday.

“I’m pretty happy with fifth place today considering how our weekend went. We just never got the handling right and the car was really uncomfortable to drive all weekend. We raced a bit conservative and after my bad luck in the last few races I’m just happy to be able to finish. We knew there would be a lot of incidents today so we just kind of waited for things to happen and got a top five as a result.

“Some days you’re disappointed with a fifth place, other times you’re happy. This was definitely one of the days when I was happy with fifth.”

Matsuura had a strong run spoiled by a collision with a safety vehicle. (LAT photo)

Fitting, perhaps, that a bizarre IRL IndyCar Series race ended on a bizarre note. With nearly half of the field out of Saturday’s race at Nashville Superspeedway because of accidents or mechanical failures and two cars in the wall after a fiery crash, Kosuke Matsuura’s car and an IRL command vehicle collided.

And, to top the weirdness, the drivers blamed each other for the crash.

Matsuura said he was following Sam Hornish Jr. low through Turn Four under caution to avoid debris from the crash. Suddenly, Matsuura said, a Chevrolet Suburban pulled in front of him.

“I started to follow Hornish into the pit lane, and a rescue vehicle pulled out right in front of me,” Matsuura said. “There wasn’t anything I could do. I think we were looking at a top-six finish tonight.”

The vehicle carries doctors to crash scenes. It sustained damage on the right side. Matsuura’s No. 55 Super Aguri Fernandez Racing Panoz-Honda sustained enough damage that it was unable to finish the race. Matsuura finished 13th.

Nobody was injured in the crash, but IRL officials indicated Matsuura was at fault. Meanwhile, Tom Anderson, the team’s managing director, made light of the incident.

“Kosuke now has something in common with Mario and Michael Andretti in the fact that he has been involved in an accident with a safety vehicle,” Anderson said. “It was an unfortunate end to what easily could have been a good top-10 finish. Fortunately, no one was hurt.”

Frustrating crashes

Two of the five crashes during Saturday’s race cost drivers a shot to win. Tony Kanaan’s car broke and crashed while he was leading on the 116th lap, and Vitor Meira and Alex Barron crashed while they were battling for third with 24 laps remaining.

“It was upsetting for me because I knew we had kept going, I know I would have had something for Dario (Franchitti),” Meira said. “You race on the white line and still get hit.”

Meira was attempting to pass Barron on the inside going into the fourth turn when the cars collided. Barron blamed Meira for forcing the issue.

“I wouldn’t have done anything differently,” Barron said. “That’s the way it goes sometimes. It’s truly unfortunate, though. We were really strong, and could have finished second or third.”
Kanaan was attempting to pass Darren Manning when his right front suspension snapped and sent the No. 11 Andretti Green Racing Dallara-Honda into the No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Panoz-Toyota. Kanaan said he thought debris struck the car, causing the failure.

“The yellow came out for debris,” Kanaan said. “I slowed down and I think debris hit my front suspension and shattered it. It just broke. It’s a shame. We had a good race going.”

Kanaan, who led 75 laps, finished 19th and lost ground in the standings to teammate Dario Franchitti, who won the race and moved to within three points of Kanaan.

Patrick shows her mettle

Danica Patrick didn’t win, but for a short time during Saturday’s Firestone Indy 200, she raced gamely for the lead. Patrick eventually finished seventh, but her wheel-to-wheel duel with Sam Hornish Jr. for second place brought praise from both drivers, who have faced each other since their teenage karting days.

“I respect him,” Patrick said. “We’ve raced against each other for a long time. He knows when push comes to shove that we’re both pretty darned tough. That goes back to our pre-teenage years. … Obviously, he was paying attention to his spotter and respecting the space, which is, in turn, respecting me.”

Hornish returned the compliment.

“I was pushing it pretty hard at that point in time,” he said. “We gave each other room around there. It was clean racing and a good time.”
