Perkins disqualified from Late Model race

Richmond Times-Dispatch Jul 17, 2005

By the time most people left Southside Speedway Friday night, they thought Michael Perkins of Petersburg had won $1,000 for winning the evening's 100-lap Late Model Sportsman feature Event, which carried a $5,000 purse.

But by the time technical inspections had concluded at about 1 a.m., Perkins had been disqualified and David Zimmer had been declared the winner.

Perkins' car was disqualified because of a weight problem that was minor, but still a violation of the rules. Chief Steward Dave Wesson said Perkins' car missed the mark by a mere half-pound.

"I'm sorry to see Michael lose like that," Zimmer said. "But those things happen to all of us at one time or another. We've done a lot of racing together and I'm sure he'll be back stronger than ever."
