F1 Puts Forward Two New Qualifying Formats, Asks Fans to Opine

Both new formats would put an end to the current single-lap formula, which makes each car run all by itself on the track. (LAT Photo)

Often criticized as not sufficiently fan-friendly, Formula 1 is undertaking its second fan consultation in a couple of month’s time, with its official website now asking for feedback on two new qualifying formats that, one assumes, are the frontrunners to replace the unloved single-lap formula currently in use.

Both propositions consist of 60-minute Saturday sessions with unlimited laps and no refueling restrictions.

Proposal 1 suggests two 25-minute “halves” separated by a 10-minute break. Drivers must set a time in each half, and each driver’s best times from both halves is added up to determine the starting grid. The format would be quite TV-friendly with its halfway break, but perhaps a little confusing as a driver’s qualifying time would not correspond to the figure from a single fastest lap.

Proposal 2 has a “knockout” format: the five slowest cars in the session’s first 15 minutes are excluded, qualifying 16th to 20th on the grid. The procedure is repeated for the next 15 minutes, until there are only 10 cars left for a free-for-all half-an-hour battle for the pole - times from the first 30 minutes not being carried to the second half.

Keeping the current format is also an option on the survey.

Other than the fact that anyone can go out and score pole by putting only 1 lap worth fuel in the car, I think the current format is better than the proposed 2. But if I had my choice they should go back to the traditional way, 1 hour, 12 laps, go fast.

I like the current format. You can either win the pole or start farther back, both has rewards and risks.
