Hayden Has His Day

Honda rider Nicky Hayden delivered the perfect result for 57,000 MotoGP fans at Laguna Seca today by winning the Red Bull USGP, the first GP race in America since 1994.

It was Hayden’s first career GP victory and came at the expense of fellow American Colin Edwards (Yamaha) who was second with world Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) completing the podium in third place. This was the first time since 1993 in Spain (Kevin Schwantz and Wayne Rainey) that American riders had been 1-2 in a grand prix.

But this was Hayden’s day. The 23 year-old from Kentucky did it in style leading every lap of the 32 lap race. In the process he held off strong pressure from Rossi, and then later in the race Edwards.

Hayden now joins other great American riders such as Eddie Lawson, Wayne and John Kocinski as a GP winner at Laguna Seca

Hayden had started form pole position and jumped to an early lead but even with Yamaha rival Rossi chasing hard he opened a clear gap. By half distance Edwards had moved into second and took up the challenge with Hayden’s lead of 2.6s shrinking to 1.9s with six laps to go.

But the former US Superbike champion stayed calm and easily held Edwards at bay as he rode to a very popular victory.

“It’s a dream come true and it’s the first time I’ve won anything since 2002, except a dating game on television, “ said an ecstatic Hayden.

“Everything worked well and I rode my heart out for the whole race. When the gap got smaller to Colin I just stayed focussed and kept pushing.

“This win is for everyone in my team and for Honda for believing in me and for all the great fans around the track today who helped me so much.”

Hayden’s victory takes him to sixth in the world championship standings with 85 points, now just eight behind Edwards in fifth.

Even though he was third today Rossi extended his championship lead because nearest rival Marco Melandri failed to finish after crashing out at the end of lap one. This incident also eliminated another Honda Alex Barros.

After eight races, with nine still remaining, Rossi leads with 186 points ahead of Melandri on 107, Max Biaggi 100 with Sete Gibernau fourth on 95 points.

In today’s Laguna Seca race, Edwards recovered from a poor start and went from being sixth on lap one to be Hayden’s main threat over the second half of the race.

“I saw Nicky and Valentino getting away and I thought ‘this is going to be tough”, Edwards said.

“Once I got clear of Valentino I still had something left to try and catch Nicky but every time I closed the gap he responded. I just held off Valentino on the last lap, I nearly crashed a couple of times.”

Rossi appeared happy to accept third at his first appearance at the tricky and demanding Laguna Seca track.

“I have been on the podium at every race this year so the team is doing a good job,” said Rossi who has won six races.

Posted Image“I made some mistakes with the setting of the bike in practice so it was not 100% for this race but I have learnt a lot about Laguna, especially following Nicky and Colin. I was the first European rider to finish behind the Americans so I’m happy about that.”

Biaggi claimed fourth place just two second behind Rossi after a long battle with Sete Gibernau, the pair riding together almost for the whole race distance.

“I lost touch with the leaders every though I did a good start and went from seventh to fourth,” Biaggi said.

“I liked the duel with Gibernau, it was tough but always fair.”

Honda rider Troy Bayliss held off a charging group to finish sixth with Makoto Tamada, John Hopkins, Shinya Nakano and Loris Capirossi close behind.

Hopkins in eighth was the third American rider to finish.

Hopkins had expected a much better result after qualifying on the second row but could not find a way past the Honda ridden by Bayliss.

“It’s definitely not where we wanted to finish,” Hopkins said.

“I got passed by a few guys in the beginning and it’s so hard to make those passes back on this track. I tried for a long time to get past Bayliss but it just didn’t come along.”

Kenny Roberts Jr on the second Suzuki was the final American home in a distant 14th after a disappointing day.

“I have a strong team and hopefully we can figure out what’s going on with the package and get back to where we want to be,” Roberts said.

The next race is the British Grand Prix at Donington Park and there with be a lot of interest in whether Hayden, now that he has won his first GP, can again be a front-runner in England and capitalize on his Laguna Seca success.

In other racing news: Justin Wilson won the Toronto race. I was watching this and this race could've been won by either Paul Tracy or Sebastian Bourdais but they both made contact when they came out of pit road. Sebastian never recovered and Paul had mechanical problems. It was a nice race at a very awesome track.

THat had to of been the best Champ Car race of the year so far.

I'm a big fan of Bourdais but I do think he was at fault for that incident leaving the pits. He clearly cut off Tracy, and it was quite unsportsman like for the #1 team to blame Tracy for the wreck.

But Wilson's race winning on track pass on Oriel Servia for the lead was absolutly amazing!! :cooljoe: :cooljoe:
