http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/formulaone/17692/ (For the clicking challenged...see below.) Build a Chicane or We Don't Race, Say Michelin Teams! Indianapolis, Ind. – 6/18/2005 The seven Michelin teams have agreed that they will only race in the USGP if a chicane is fitted before the banked Turn 13 overnight. The teams have written a letter to the FIA explaining their position and requesting the construction of a chicane. However that is extremely unlikely to happen, which means that we could see a race take place with just the six Bridgestone cars in it, if the Michelin teams stick to their agreement. The news emerged after most of the world’s media had headed off to dine in downtown Indy, which means that Speedtv.com was left to get a world exclusive insight from the key personnel involved, none of whom was prepared to be quoted on the record. However four team bosses made it quite clear to us that this was a serious decision and that there was now no other alternative. The bombshell decision came after a meeting of the team principals and Michelin bosses. The French company could not guarantee the safety of its tires, and the fact that this race is in the USA, where litigation is common, made things even more awkward. The option of using the Barcelona tires imported from Clermont-Ferrand has in effect been abandoned. Teams decided that they had no real information about whether they would last, and also there was no firm knowledge about what penalties might ensue if they were used, although it is understood that the FIA had informally suggested that something like a 10 second stop-and-go rather than exclusion. Thus the chicane option was considered the only viable choice. Bernie Ecclestone has agreed that it makes sense, and he is duty bound to provide a full field of cars for the race for promoter Tony George. However, the practicalities are insurmountable in terms of designing a chicane, building it, and ensuring that it is safe. Changes to tracks go through a strict homologation process. All those jobs are the responsibility of Charlie Whiting. As of 8 p.m. Saturday night, nothing was being done to put the process into motion, and we understand that while Bernie wants it to happen, there are too many hurdles to be overcome in terms of safety. We understand that Whiting has resisted pressure from Ecclestone to make it happen, comewhat may. The cars are of course equipped with the downforce configuration and gear ratios for the track as it was designed, and they won’t be allowed to change. The only realistic alternative is that the teams opt to run “slowly” through the problematic Turn 13. That is what bemused Ferrari sources suggest they do, anyway, having indicated that there was no way it was going to happen. This story is not yet over, and Sunday at Indy could be the most dramatic and emotionally charged day at any F1 circuit since 1994. |

From F1Racing.net: Michelin will not allow its seven Formula One teams race in the US Grand Prix today. This was announced by Michelin today in response of the FIA statement. The FIA refused to allow Michelin to use different tyres or to create a chicane in the final corner. It means that Renault, McLaren, Williams, Toyota, Sauber, Red Bull and BAR will not be racing in the F1's ninth round. It is still unclear what will happen and if the race will get underway with only six cars (Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi).

I really didn't believe that last night, but WOW. I hope that all the tires can handle the heat- there's no guarantee that the Bridgestones are gonna last either. I really hope nothing bad happens today... Maybe it's best for one of the Michelin boys (RBR please!) to run the race at a slower pace, not abuse the sidewalls, and finish the race- which is supposedly what the FIA has told them to do. If I was Kimi and them I'd go run anyway and be slow enough to finish and gain points on the Renault team. Just read on Formula1.com that Renault said that if they can't change tires, they're not gonna race. |

That really ruined the weekend for me. I was really looking forward to that race. The FIA cheated the fans and teams of a great show. I have that feeling that I did after the Dover race last summer- the empty feeling that you've been robbed. |

remember what i said before about the advantages of being one of the few bridgestone runners while everyone else was on another tire? anyways, i think the main reason why the bridgestones didnt have any problems was because of the IRL race.....they used Firestones for the Indy 500 and since Firesone is a sister company of Bridgestone, they were able to acuire data about the poorly repaved indy track and how to fix the problem. In the last two races (Indy and NASCAR), the test sessions actually had to be cancelled because the circuit was so poorly repaved. They had to diamond grind the entire circuit before the car could go back. (according to the tv )

And another thing, I hope people aren't mad at the teams for this. They were told that the tires wouldn't last so they can't take a risk at the speeds they're going. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a riot or something tonight. I know they said that the Red Bull guys were sorta worried about going to their party tonight. |

also, on the topic of tires.... in Japan Super GT (a GT car racing series), they have three different tire manufacturers: Dunlop, Birdgestone, and Yokahoma. Bridgestone has always been the best tire followed by Dunlop. Last year, Yokahoma had pretty bad tires, so this year only one team has them and they also get sponsorship from them. Lots of people thought it was a bad move, even if they would get sponsorship money..but they were proven wrong since there were times this year when Yokohoma whipped out a super great tire....and that team has got thier first win ever this year. This year, Yokohoma has a very fast slick tire that is faster then the Birdgestones, but it wears faster. But the great thing about the Yokohama slicks this year is that they can be also run safely in light rain, unlike everyone else. So this year the Yokohoma Supra is the real winner of the tire deals. Red Bull should do the same.... Anyways, there was really supposed to be one team racing today, Ferrari. Jordan and Minardi both made an agreement with each other that they would also sit out if the FIA would refuse to listen to the Michilen teams. But when Jordan didnt pull over, Minardi didnt also, since they didnt want to be the loosers in the deal. I gained a lot of respect for Paul Stoddart today for at least trying to fight against the FIA, while i have no respect for the new Jrodan teams boss for breaking the deal they had with minardi. I really wish Eddie Jordan was still the boss....he was my favorite team principal....and was the biggest party animal in the F1 garage

I'm not much of a fan of Jordan after today, not that I was anyway. "I've not experienced anything like this in my career before. Frankly, I'm embarrassed." - David Coulthard He is THE man! We heard on TV right before they all pulled in that he was pleading with his team to let him stay out and race. |

i was always a huge fan of Jordan, especially a few years back when Jordan was in their good times (with a good mugen-honda powerplant) and had some money to use. They always were about enthuiastic about racing....but this new Midland team boss is a big:  |

Yeah. Basically it was the backmarkers of the Jordan's and the Minardi's and then there was Michael and Ruebens. Of course RB can't pass him, and Michael drove him off the track getting off pit road, literally. Michael had class and didn't hop around or anything after he won the "race". I could've scored points today. |

Well it'd be more like Chevy and Dodge saying that our teams aren't going to race if they still want support because our engine can suddenly detonate or explode or something like that. It's not that NASCAR didn't let them race, it's that there was basically a showdown and neither one would give in first, so Chevy and Dodge just wouldn't race. The FIA isn't as "eager" to bend the rules as NASCAR is- ie 2001 Winston. |

No, Bernie says it's Tony George's fault for not advertising the race enough. That scoundrel flew off in his copter midway through the race and TG has to pay for the consequences, literally (he will be, at least I think so, one way or another). |
