Dodson, Rudy tangle at Southside: Driver altercation remains on track

By CHRIS THOMPSON, Sports Writer 06/18/2005

MIDLOTHIAN - After earning his second career victory last week, things were looking up for veteran driver Mike Rudy heading into Friday night's 50-lap Modified feature at Southside Speedway.

With a dominating chassis in his corner, the Prince George native was looking forward to starting a new string of top-five finishes to accompany his chase for the championship. A controversial crash with Dinwiddie's Chris Dodson during the race left him hot under the collar and wondering what might've been.

Rudy, who started on the pole after winning one of the two qualifying sprints, was running second to Thomas Stinson of Chester on Lap 12. Rudy's shot at the win then went up in smoke suddenly after he made wheel-to-wheel contact with Dodson, spinning the pair at the exit of Turn 4.

Stinson would eventually survive four caution flags and a late-race battle with a hard-charging Dodson to collect the victory. But after the checkered flag fell, the fans' eyes were fixed on the garage area manned by Dodson and Rudy, who rallied to finish second and fourth, respectively.

As Rudy climbed from the cockpit of his No. 8 hot rod in the infield, he attempted to head in the direction of Dodson's pit stall to discuss the incident. Several Chesterfield County police officers, who threatened to arrest any competitors involved in a fight, wouldn't allow the move. They asked Rudy to remain alongside his car as a safety precaution in the wake of all the recent scuffles at the speedway.

Rudy then expressed his displeasure with Dodson, a longtime ally, and car builder Bobby Creech, who left Dodson's pit box and tried to mix words with Rudy before being escorted from the track by the police.

"I don't know...it seems like he [Dodson] gets into a lot of cars every week," said a frustrated Rudy, who nearly received the black flag from Southside chief steward Dave Wesson for throwing his car into reverse and backing into Dodson in Turn 2 during the yellow flag for their altercation. "That is probably why he didn't make it to Late Model stock cars because he can't drive worth a lick.

"I don't know how much higher I have to get on the racetrack...I guess in the stands before someone won't run into me."

Dodson, an accomplished wheelman at Southside who almost won last year's track championship, had a different view of the incident.

"We had a super car in the race, and I thought I was going to get him [Stinson] right there with about 10 [laps] to go, but the caution just killed me," a gracious Dodson said. "But I am not going to turn anyone on the straightaway.

"I have got more laps than anybody over here. I was turning left, and if you look, the doughnut on his car is in front of the 8. I don't know how he can say I turned into him. But let me tell you something, I have fought wars at this place with the best of them...Roy [Hendrick], Bugs [Hairfield] and Wayne [Patterson], and I am still standing."

Amidst the chaos, Stinson was happy to bring his machine home in one piece.

"The guys worked real hard all week long, and we did not give up," said Stinson, the Modified points leader. "A win is a win."

In the 50-lap Late Model Sportsman feature, Chris Ward grabbed the lead from a faltering Steve Zuskin, who lost his weight box, in Turn 3 on Lap 32 and pulled away from Michael Perkins in the final circuits to take his fourth checkered flag of the season at the one-third-mile oval.

"I have to hand it to Zuskin...he was really fast, but it was just one of those things," Ward said.

John Eversole, Mike Greathouse and Zuskin rounded out the top five.

Fred Key and Richard Skeens won the twin 25-lap Grand Stock duels.

J.B. Sipe visited victory lane in the Pro-Six division.
