US GP- Friday Practice
Horse Racing

Asking an engine builder how much horsepower his engine produces is considered as rude as asking a woman her age, but there is no doubt that Red Bull Racing’s new-for-Indy V10 engine helped today, with both David Coulthard (6th) and Scott Speed (8th) making it into the top ten of the Brickyard hit parade, while Christian Klien ended the first day of practice in 14th spot.

It was a Brickyard hit parade of a different sort for Ralf Schumacher as the German slammed his Toyota into the wall, almost at the exact same spot as he did last year in a Williams. He hit it hard, after a rear tyre deflated suddenly, but fortunately, it was much less serious than his 2004 crash and he was able to get out of the cockpit unaided, although he was taken to hospital as a precaution. One can only suggest that Ralf should stop listening to his favourite Pink Floyd track, “Another Brick in the Wall!” The younger Schumacher was not impressed and as soon as he got out of the car, he started kicking it. Let’s hope he did not injure his foot.

The McLaren duo of Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Räikkönen were quickest, followed by the Ferraris of Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher. Next up is the Williams of Nick Heidfeld, while in between Coulthard and Speed is the third McLaren of Pedro de la Rosa.

F1 Goes Back to the Future

Whether it’s cars, motorbikes, furniture or clothes, current designers seem to be taking their influences from the past and “retro” is very now. It looks as though this trend will hit F1 in 2008 if proposals revealed in Indianapolis by the FIA are voted through.

The ideas were contained in a lengthy nine page document, but the juicy bits are as follows: traction control will  be banned, all cars will use the same brakes and gearbox, and the gearchange must be mechanical and operated by hand. Drivers will have to work on strengthening their left feet again, as the clutch will have to be operated by a foot pedal. The cars will be wider and run on just one make of slick tyre. Spare cars are banned, but teams can buy parts or even complete cars from one another.

An amazing set of rules, but it seems they have forgotten the one about drivers not being allowed to use crash helmets and having to wear white silk scarves!

That will certainly change things a good bit.

I can't imagine that the manufactures would like that...
