Edwards takes wild ride off the track

By JOHN ERZAR

The (Wilkes-Barre) Times Leader

LONG POND – Traveling 170 mph or so around Pocono Raceway wasn’t the only wild ride for Carl Edwards, winner of Sunday’s NASCAR Nextel Cup Pocono 500.

Saturday night appeared to be wilder.

Edwards, fellow driver Sterling Marlin and owner Jack Roush were in Nashville, Tenn., on Saturday night for the Busch Series race. The event was rained out, sending the trio and a few others on a strange journey back to Pocono.

It wasn’t exactly “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” but it was similar.

First, the group flew out of Nashville only to find they couldn’t land in Mount Pocono. Instead, they headed to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.

One problem.

“Through my lack of preparation, we didn’t have enough cars at Wilkes-Barre to get us here,” Roush said. “We only had Carl’s truck.”

A pickup truck at that and six people had to cram into it. So, Edwards decided to climb into the truck bed and ride about 35 miles back to the track.

“I don’t know how frightened he was in the back of the truck compared to my airplane ride,” said Roush, an avid pilot. “But I told Jason (Hedlesky), the driver, if you see Bambi in front, I don’t want you to swerve left, I don’t want you to swerve right, I want you to hit him dead center.”
