Goodyear called to the trailer: Goodyear officials were called to the NASCAR trailer after 11 drivers blew out a total of 22 left front tires Sunday at Pocono. Goodyear product manager Rick Heinrich said Goodyear engineers noticed several setups that "were very abusive to the left front outside shoulder" of the tires and that low air pressure could have compounded the problem. "It's never the tires' fault, is it?" says crew chief Fatback McSwain, whose driver, Ricky Rudd, was the victim of six cut tires.(Sporting News) AND Goodyear field manager Rick Heinrich blamed most of the problems on a combination of overly-aggressive chassis setups and running over the rough rumble-strip curbing at the inside edge of the tunnel turn.(Winston Salem Journal) AND II see a large story dealing with the tire problem at Speedtv.com: Tire Failures: More Questions Than Answers.(6-13-2005) |

Even an idiot could figure out that it was not the tires fault. There were 3 or 4 people that had the SAME problem more than once and just a few others that had it just once. Keep in mind, there were 35 or so drivers that had NO problems with tires. Also, the problems happened fairly early in the run, leading me to believe it was due to low air pressures. I also think it was the rumble strips that added to it. I don't know why they have those there. I heard rumble strips are to wake up drivers if they fall asleep and are going off the road. Well, if a racecar driver falls asleep, he's going to hit the wall no matter what. Pocono and Indy both need those removed because cars had lots of trouble with them last year at Indy. |

the rumble strips are there for the infield road course. at road courses, the drivers can use rumble strips to their advantage if they're good. |

It's to keep dirt down off the track. And Kasey's the hardest driver and probably the most aggressive car (setup wise) on tires out there, so he can't even count when it comes to tire issues. |

Eh. Kasey had one due to contact with the 01 or 20 or somebody, he had 4 flat tires after the turn 3 spin, and then he had his standard random flat tire for the race, so I don't see the big deal . |

What I think was funny was on Nascar Nation they listed all the people that had problems and they included Jeff Gordon. :huh2: He came in thinking he had a problem and didn't. Way to be on top of it guys. |

there's been A LOT of combinations. but this softer tire is gonna bring a lot of troubles pretty soon especially in the summer. is gonna be hot and I won't be surprised if those shoulders and braces will melt because of the heat. and add the fact of more aggresive setups trying to keep the car from spinning due to the shorter spoiler. just watch: summer is here and I see a lot of tire trouble in the upcoming weeks. |

Those tires aren't just gonna melt. There's gonna be some heavy braking mixed in or something to cause that. |

I was thinking that was a little bizarre too. Pocono is twice as long and half as banked. |

your kidding me rite? How you can fall asleep in a racecar is beyond me  like others said, they are used at road courses around just about every corner. It can accutally help you take the corner faster, as it feels like it pulls the car deeper into the corner towards the apex, but it can sometimes damage cars if the cars are too low. |

I know all that from watching Nascar (first race I watched in 2001 was at Infineon) and playing Gran Turismo Dennis. I just didn't know that these particular strips that caused all the trouble were part of a road course. |

Two questions: Why didn't you become a Tony Stewart fan if that was the first one? And how the hell can someone not know that? |

1. Jeff was leading under caution and I remember turning on the TV and seeing that car and knowing it was Jeff Gordon but being used to his rainbow car by the Nascar games I had and just thought it was a special paint scheme or something. lol I guess I just liked the car. I don't really know why I picked who I did. It's been a long time since then. It was so neat getting introduced to Nascar though those first two races. I mean, it was like my long lost passion and I was addicted instantly. I still remember Britney Spears giving the command and doing that Pepsi commecial. 2. I just don't. I've never watched any other cars race on the track other than Nascar. |
