Rudy wins Modified event; Oliver's return is cut short Former champion escorted from track after two crashes BY WALT AMACKER TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER Jun 11, 2005 MIKE RUDYLast night's Modified winner at Southside Speedway After four weeks without racing at Southside Speedway, the usual suspects showed up last night and gave the crowd its money's worth. Mike Rudy took a wire-to-wire win in the 50-lap Modified race, recording his second win overall at Southside. Rudy showed a strong car that paced the field while all heck broke out behind him. By Lap 9, division points leader Thomas Stinson and second-place Chris Dodson seemed as if they were headed for an eventual shootout with Rudy until former track champion Craig Oliver T-boned Stinson in Turn 4. Stinson and Oliver were able to continue, but a five-car crash that later included Oliver was too much for track officials to overlook. Oliver, who works for Kevin Harvick's No. 29 Nextel Cup Chevrolet at Richard Childress Racing, was making a rare appearance at Southside, where he won the Modified title in 2002. Chief Steward Dave Wesson immediately ordered Oliver to be escorted from the track by Chesterfield police. "I could see what Mr. Oliver was doing could lead to problems between drivers and crew members," Wesson said. "So I thought the best thing to do was remove him from the premises. And unless I am persuaded differently, Mr. Oliver will be suspended for the balance of the current racing season at Southside Speedway." Rudy ran a clean, strong race. "We were a little tight and we've still got to work on that," Rudy said. "There were some good cars and drivers on my tail, and I knew I had to drive a little harder. It paid off." Chris Ward showed a strong car in Late Model heat races in the No. 43 of Ron Roberts Racing, taking the pole for the 50-lap event and never yielding while overcoming strong charges from Mike Greathouse, Steve Zuskin, Michael Perkins and John Eversole. Perkins was on Ward's bumper until he was passed by Zuskin on Lap 39. Perkins spun out on the backstretch a lap later, leaving a two-car race between Ward and Zuskin. Ward prevailed by slightly more than a car length. "When Steve [Zuskin] got by Greathouse, who was right on my tail, it definitely got my attention," Ward said. "I knew that if he had that kind of speed it was going to take everything I had. Fortunately things went my way. "We made some changes in the car after a practice session a couple of weeks ago, and I think that helped us out." Joey Bryant won the 30-lap Grand Stock race, Cameron Patrick took the Legends 25-lapper, and Greg Harris captured the 25-lap U-Car feature. RESULTS Modified (50 laps): 1. Mike Rudy; 2.
