Kahne Hints at Wanting to Try Indy 500
Written by: Ben Blake
Mooresville, N.C. – 6/7/2005 A former USAC midget champion, Kahne would like to have a go at open-wheel's upper echelons in the future... (LAT Photo)

Kasey Kahne, top-level NASCAR racer with Evernham Motorsports, hinted Tuesday that he hopes to make a try at the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. Kahne, former USAC midget champion, helped run his family sprint-car team out of Indianapolis, that team now located in North Carolina. He continues to run occasional USAC and Outlaws races.

Asked if he had a chance to watch this year's Indy 500 while cooped with NASCAR at Charlotte, he said, "I watched pretty much all of it. I had a few meet-and-greets to do during it, but I was able to watch most of the 500. It's such an exciting race. It's exciting to watch every part of it.

"I enjoyed it when I used to go and watch, and now I watch it on TV. I would hope to get an opportunity to race in that race in the near future."

How that could happen is not clear. Owner Evernham is DaimlerChrysler's factory manager in NASCAR, but DC has no direct involvement with the Indy Racing League. Kasey Kahne Motorsports, which recently expanded its facilities, produces USAC-type cars, and Kahne and Evernham have an alliance in this area, which includes development of young driver Erin Crocker.

In addition, the new start time for the 500 (1 p.m. ET) makes it impossible for drivers to compete in both the 500 and the Charlotte race later in the day.

Several NASCAR regulars have indicated at least a passing interest in running the 500, with Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon having done so. Dale Earnhardt Jr. also has mused that he'd like to give the big race a shot.

He's just running his mouth, at least I think he is.

That would be cool if he would do it.

I wish Gordon would do it also.

I was referring to the 2005 May Coca Cola 600 at the Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, NC, which Bumble Bee told us to quote him that Kenseth would win.

well if it wasn't for Jr and team. then Kenseth would've at least contend. I'm pretty sure he would've gamble to get track position which would've put him at the front and might've had a shot of holding off Jimmie.

at least you gotta let my driver FINISH the race before you bring my qoute into play. like D.W. says "In order to finish first. you MUST first finish"

Right. I love how people jumped on Biffle after he said dominating Atlanta and winding up third made the worst day of his life. If he's not extremely dissapointed about losing that race, he must not wanna win very much. I want someone who wants to win win win and doesn't take losing lightly. Just like Tony said about Danny Lasoski. "He's one of my best friends, but if he accepted losing, I'd fire his ass."

I thought that was bizzare about the Biffle/ Atlanta thing too. The one that hurt last year the most was Texas and Lowe's. It's different when the race is handed to as opposed to being the class of the field and having it stolen.
