Red Bull Wants to Keep Coulthard
Written by: Cassio Cortes
London, UK – 6/2/2005 DC has helped Red Bull to dice it with the big boys at the front this season. (LAT Photo)

Fifteen points scored in seven races have helped David Coulthard to make his case with his new bosses at Red Bull Racing, as the team has opened negotiations to retain the Scot’s services next year.

Discredited after two below-par seasons at McLaren, DC was even discarded by RBR before this season’s start, until the new outfit decided that it needed an experienced driver in its debut year in F1 after all.

Coulthard responded with a fourth-place at his very first race in Australia, then scored another four times in six races - including another fourth at last weekend’s European GP - to easily become the team’s leader. The Scot was even a serious threat for a podium at Monaco before being involved in the Christijan Albers-triggered “Mirabeau Melee” and at the ‘Ring, where he was hampered by a drive-through penalty for pitlane speeding.

"His performances have been excellent this year and he has been the perfect benchmark for the youngsters," sporting director Christian Horner told Autosport magazine.

"As long as I have the desire and the talent and ability there's no reason to stop, and I will give my commitment to the team for as long as they continue to give it to me," the 34-year-old driver added to the same publication.

The second RBR seat remains F1’s most varied though, as Austrian Christian Klien is set to retake the position from Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi beginning with the Canadian GP on June 12.

2006 'Bull set for wind tunnel

Guenther Steiner
Red Bull's 2006 F1 car is about ready to enter the wind tunnel. Technical director Guenther Steiner, anticipating a 30 horse power Cosworth boost in America, said the next (Ferrari powered) Red Bull car is currently a fifty per cent scale model for the tunnel.

"The first model goes into the wind tunnel in three weeks," the Italian-German revealed.

He also said 'new aero parts' from the tunnel would be fitted to the current RB1 at Magny Cours or Silverstone (July).

Speed decision slowed by weather.
Fri 03 Jun, 12:24 PM

Red Bull Racing was again forced to delay its decision on whether Scott Speed would assume the role of third driver at the Canadian and US grands prix, after the American was denied a chance to test at Silverstone.

The team had hoped to decide whether GP2 frontrunner Speed should take over Vitantonio Liuzzi as third driver in the two transatlantic events after giving him a chance to test for the team on Wednesday, but bad weather and then the need for the squad to catch up on lost time prevented Speed from getting any meaningful track time on either of the first two days of the test.

David Coulthard and Christian Klien conducted the programme on Thursday, leaving Speed with only Friday's session to make his mark, although an appearance would still depend on how much progress the team had made in its preparations for the Canadian Grand Prix, in Montreal, next weekend.

From Horner himself:
"For this weekend and next week in Indianapolis, we have decided to give Red Bull Junior driver Scott Speed a couple of outings in the third car on Friday morning, following a successful test at Silverstone this week and in Barcelona earlier in the year. These races coincide with a gap in his GP2 schedule. We will be watching his progress with interest. Scott is obviously the most promising talent to come out of the USA for some considerable time. His achievements in Europe have been extremely impressive."

In practice 1, Speed was 15 of 23 cars, and in practice 2 he was 23 of 23. But the 15th was faster than his teammates and overall a very good debut for an F1 weekend.

Red Bull to Bear Ferrari Name in 2006
Thursday, 09 June 2005 04:12

The Red Bull Racing Formula One team will be renamed Red Bull Ferrari in 2006, Austrian owner Dietrich Mateschitz revealed this week.
The energy drinks company, which bought Jaguar Racing late last year and rebranded it Red Bull Racing, had signed an engine deal with the Italian Champions, starting with next season. And unlike current Ferrari customers, Sauber Petronas, Mateschitz said the team will bear Ferrari's name, saying part of the reason for choosing Ferrari as engine suppliers was their name's marketing value.

"We decided [to go with Ferrari] with the background of risk minimisation, performance of the engine and marketing value," the Austrian told Swiss newspaper Motorsport Aktuell. "Ferrari was the dream partner, and Ferrari wanted to have us as well. We also will have their name in the team name next year Red Bull Ferrari."

Mateschitz also said the team had not yet decided whether to switch to Bridgestone for the 2006 season, but hinted that his team may well choose the Japanese tyre maker, partners of Ferrari, over their current supplier, Michelin.

"We aim for competitiveness," Mateschitz told the Swiss paper. "If you look at Bridgestone, at the possibilities to invest, their ambitions, their resources ... I firmly believe that they will be very competitive in 2006.

"Both tyre companies would like to work with us, we will soon get their offers. The financial aspect of course plays a certain role, but it is not priority one. For 2005, we have a deal for Michelin tyres at cost price."

Mateschitz denied that his team were pressured by Ferrari to switch to Bridgestone, however, and said that a switch to Bridgestone, adding: "There are certain aspects which speak in favour of Bridgestone. There are pros and cons. Right now, the Japanese do not have many possibilities to test with a car on the limit. It is the Ferrari tyre so we might have some synergies.

"But we have to decide soon, since the constructors of the car would like to know."

I think that's smart so maybe they won't get crap engines like the Saubers have this year. Having Ferrari in the name of the team would hold them to a certain amount of responsibility. Obviously, they would be working "close" together if they switch to Bridgestones.

accutally swittching to bridgestones might be a good idea afterall....

think of it...Michilen caters to the better (aka richer) teams first and then works their way down (just like any company would). So they would first look at Willams, Mclaren, Renault, Toyota, and BAR (if they ever get their act together this year), and then Red Bull.
But if they went with bridgestones, they would be the second most important team to bridgestone (after Ferrari themselves) which would mean they would get more attention.

Also, they could take the gamble since most of the field uses michilens, if by just chance bridgestone pull out a super tire next year, they would be able to improve a whole lot since only they and Ferrari would be able to use it to full advantage (since Jordan and Minardi on bridgestones are not going to be competitve anytime soon).

Any team to go from Michilen to Bridgestones is crazy. It is Bridgestone's fault that Ferrari is struggling this season.

But Bridgestone only has Ferrari (for all practical reasons). The more teams a tire company has, theoretically, the better both will be.
