It’s déjà vu all over again for Indianapolis 500 winners Buddy Rice, Kenny Brack and Bobby Rahal.

Rahal named Brack, the 500’s winner in 1999, to the team’s No. 15 car today, a substitute for Rice, last year’s winner who was injured May 11 in an accident at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Rice suffered a partially torn spinal ligament and was not cleared to participate.

The irony is that Rice got his opportunity with Rahal Letterman Racing at the beginning of the 2004 season when Brack couldn’t return from near-fatal injuries.

“I believe this all happens for a reason,” said the 39-year-old Swede, who will be aiming for his sixth Indy start in third-round qualifying Saturday. “It’s a twisted little thing.

“I don’t think Hollywood could come up with a script better than this one.”

Rice took the situation in stride, insisting he will continue to help the team this month in any way possible.

“I’m extremely happy for (Brack),” he said.

Brack is expected to be in the Argent Mortgage-sponsored car when practice resumes today at noon. The session runs through 6 p.m.

Helio Castroneves, who won the 500 in 2001 and 2002, was glad Rahal didn’t add another Danica Patrick to fill Rice’s spot.

“One (girl) is enough,” he said.

Patrick was the No. 4 qualifier in last weekend’s qualifying session.
