Three Cup crew chiefs fined and suspended Knaus, Berrier and Gustafson penalized for violations at Vegas DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR has announced that rule infractions this past weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway have resulted in the suspension of three Nextel Cup Series crew chiefs. The No. 48 Chevrolet team received three penalties, due to the car's roof height being too low in post-race inspection -- a violation of Section 12-4-A of the Cup series' rule book (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and Section 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components, and/or equipment used that do not conform to NASCAR rules). A penalty of 25 driver points dropped Jimmie Johnson -- the race winner at Las Vegas -- back to second place in the standings, 10 behind reigning series champion Kurt Busch. Chad Knaus, Johnson's crew chief, has been suspended from competition for the next two races and fined $35,000; Jeff Gordon, the No. 48 car owner, has been penalized 25 owner points. Todd Berrier, crew chief for the No. 29 Chevrolet driven by Kevin Harvick, has been suspended for the next four races and fined $25,000. Those penalties resulted from the No. 29 having an unapproved fuel filler and unapproved fuel cell vent. The car was in violation of Sections 12-4-A and 12-4-Q. In addition to Berrier's penalties, Harvick has been penalized 25 driver championship points, dropping him from eighth to 10th in the driver standings, while car owner Richard Childress loses 25 car owner championship points. Alan Gustafson, crew chief for the No. 5 Chevrolet driven by Kyle Busch, has been suspended for two races and fined $25,000, due to the car's quarter-panel heights being too high in post-race inspection -- also violations of Sections 12-4-A and 12-4-Q. Busch has been assessed 25 driver points, dropping him from 18th to 22nd in the standings; car owner Rick Hendrick loses 25 owner points. In addition: • Harold Holly, crew chief for the No. 32 Chevrolet driven by Bobby Hamilton Jr., was fined $5,000 because of the No. 32 having an unapproved deck lid, a violation of Sections 12-4-A and 12-4-Q that was determined during opening-day inspection. • John Latchford, crew chief for the No. 89 Dodge driven by Morgan Shepherd, was fined $1,000 because of an unapproved fire suppression agent found during opening-day inspection. That also violated Sections 12-4A and 12-4Q. • Larry Carter, crew chief for the No. 2 Dodge driven by Rusty Wallace, was fined $1,000. During opening-day inspection, the car's shoulder harness did not have a date tag displayed, a violation of Sections 17.2-C (and 12-4-A). |

They fined Larry Carter for not having the date tag displayed? I mean I can see if it was expired, but just because it wasn't displayed. Very stupid I think. |

That could mean he didn't even have the date tag on it though. It doesn't turn around and say that the belts were still within the limit just says it wasn't displayed. Which means if he ripped it off they were probably expired. |

If it had been ok the first two or three weeks odds are it was the same harness this week. Don't try to bring the rest of us down to your drivers level.

I doubt they've had the same harness for these three weeks, plus I keep thinking I read that they already got in trouble once for belts being expired. Maybe it was a HANS, but I know something was expired. |

Berrier should do what they did with Fatback and use Trackp... Never mind, Rudd's last place out of drivers who made all 3 races  |

This is outrageous. I'm flippin' furious. Chad's the best crew cheif out there. NASCAR isn't consistent at all. Did Fatty Back get suspended after their Daytona thing? NO! F*** NASCAR. |

even if they wanted too BErrier is suspended from the race period. NO CONTACT with the team. if they allowed them to do that that would defeat the purpose of being suspended |

Well, then by gosh for every little penalty the crew chief should be suspended 2 to 4 races. I bet my life that they won't do that for the rest of the season. |

Yeah whatever. If they really wanted to all they'd have to do is buy the crew chief a seat or put him in a sky box, give him and the fill-in a cell phone and chat about strategies. They could do it if they wanted to. They can't check to see who you are when you go into the grandstands or boxes. |

It isn't needed for every little penalty, just the big ones like these. |

Glad to see penalties handed out, however this doesn't add any closure to this issue. I would love to know how the hendrick #48 and #5 managed to pass all inspections prior to post race. Really I need some closure on that. Also Harvick's penalty is too lax, especially for tinkering with the fuel cell. Granted starting in the back could count as a penalty, 25 points is far from enough for am issue like. $25,000 dollars is like a drop in the bucket for these guys, 25 points is rather miniscule as well. Fine someone over $100,000 and 100+ points, that will get the attention of the teams. As for taking the win away, you can't tell people the driver who they saw win on Sunday, suddenly isn't the winner anymore, especially when those results are in the sports section of the paper the very next day. |

Yeah, okay, that makes sense. They get the win that they recieved on sunday but not even half of the points they earned as listed in the sports section of the newspaper on monday. I think they SHOULD take wins away, depending on the situation, but like you, I don't get it about the pre-race... |

But I'm saying that (a) one year ago this would have been overlooked and (b) how often does NASCAR stay consistent on a rule violation. Good thing I'll stay alive lol. |
