The People’s Free Republic of Nimarci is an economically powerful state with a long a checkered history that stretches back well over 5000 years. The first Nimarcians created a socially and technologically advanced (relatively speaking) civilization on what is now the southern coast of Nimarci approximately 3500 years ago. Call the Nicamura culture by archaeologists this civilization, whose trading contacts spread all over Q102, flourished for over 1500 years before collapsing under the combined weight of rising sea levels, barbarian invasions and internal discord. As the Nicamura culture and power decline the Nicamurans retreated inland from their great coastal cities, leaving them to be swallowed by the rising waves. Today marine archaeologists are still pulling amazing treasures from the deep and SCUBA divers can enjoy the wonder of guided (and heavily regulated) tours of the ruins of some of the Nicamurans’ greatest cities, including the capital Kala’gava. A few small, insignificant cities survived in the north of the country, it was in these strongholds that many Nicamuran cultural treasures and scientific discoveries were saved. These cities became the basis of a number of small mutually antagonistic principalities and free republics which developed in strength and power over the next 1000 years. The three most important being The Republic of Gaha, the Princedom of Jaigav, and the Balivica Confederation (the Balivica Confederation was a political union of the three smallest and southern most of the surviving Nicamuran cities). The Nicamurans who retreated inland quickly became nomandic cattle ranchers and, intermingling with other peoples on the inland plains, quickly lost much of their Nicamuran culture and, indeed, technologies. These people came to be known as the Arcii. Descending into tribalism differing clans of the Arcii often warred with each other over pastureland and points of honour. They were also employed by the coast cities as mercenaries in their incessant wars. Just over 1000 years ago Daled, chief of the Vabava Clan launched a campaign to unite the Arcii. After 37 years of struggle, during which time he employed diplomacy (much of it marital – when Daled died he had 27 wives!), assassination and open warfare, Daled successfully united the Arcii. Unfortunately he never got to enjoy his achievement for more than few months. 5 months after Daled had conquered the last remaining Arcii clans (the Yauot and Hagaran) he was felled by the dagger of his eldest son, Fudta, while at prayer. Fudta did not gain the power he had hoped his patricide would gift him. Incensed more by the fact Fudta had murdered Daled at prayer than the fact he had killed his father, the Vabava and surviving Yauot sub-chiefs, executed Fudta by silting his throat with the same dagger he had used to kill his father. They then placed Daled’s youngest son, the 7 year-old Goa, on the bison bone throne. The few of Goa’s older brothers who objected to this move were soon killed along with their supporters and families. While Daled was uniting the Arcii similar acts of unification were occurring amongst the coastal cities, known as the Nimian states by historians today. The belying its roots as the weakest of the coastal polities, the Balivica Confederation under the leadership of dynamic Kaolthroa Jaotan (Called Kaolthroa the Great by his supporters, and Kaolthroa the Grasper by his enemies) began an aggressive period of expansion which saw its influence spread both inland in to Arcii territory (some smaller Arcii clans chose to swear loyalty to the confederacy rather than being subjected by Daled) and long previously disputed areas of the northern coast. Jaotan also began land reclamation projects along the southern coast and even encouraged the resettlement of long abandoned Nicamuran sites. After 15 years of expansion and preparation Jaotan lead the Balivica Confederacy in a war of conquest against the Princedom of Jaigav. It was this war, now called the Yartica war after the disputed coast region over which many of the early battles in the war were fought, that was to lead to the foundation of the Nimarcian state. More too come later. Questions and comments appreciated. |
