Another thing I've noticed, you can only see the top 10 all time posters, not the whole list ever. Is there someone else you can see a full list of members? It's interesting to see them all with post number. Of course it does give number 11 a good reason to post more. I'm back at uni now. Doing Cognitive Poetics, Post-Colonial Theory and Dystopias/Utopias. Working in a supermarket too. What's everyone else up to? |

Yup! Up top where you see the link Members, shows you everyone. That's a rather interesting sounding course, the rest I get but what does Cognitive Poetics involve? |

Cheers! Btw, my course title is English Language and Literature. Cognitive Poetics is a very new branch of literary study, concerned with how a piece of literature affects you psychologically. Every opinion is valid - very anti-elitist and anti-standard theories. It's also concerned with how real world cognition is translated into literature. Interesting, but the reading is a real chore to plow through. My tutor wrote won of the two text books that exists of it and her friend wrote the other, so I can't even criticise it. :p |

Oh interesting, so studying the emotional/intellectual impact of how literature is constructed? I mean, do you look at how different styles try to do this differently, or is it from a more sociological angle? |

Well, I've only been doing it two weeks so I'm no expert. As an example, last week we were studying figure and ground, which is to do with perception. How does your mind recognise an object or thing and recognise it as different from the background. How does something become a point of focus and attraction? Then looking at how this is done in literature, which also considers the idea of defamiliarisation. So I guess it's more looking at what psychologically happens when you read, how does your brain translate symbols into a story, characters and environment. I'm sure later in the course we'll be looking at different techniques and styles, but at the moment we're just learning all the terms and basics. |
