Swords of the Cross

As the name implies, these are holy weapons created for the fight against evil. Originally three swords, each supposedly forged with one of the three nails that held Christ to the cross, the swords have been remade constantly over time and sometimes the metal has been melted down and split into multiple swords or even into other types of weapons.

The three original swords were, according to legend, forged by the apostle Peter for the purpose of defending the church after Christ's ascension. Over the centuries the blades were refashioned to the styles of the times, until one was lost in the British Isles after the reign of Arthur. Fearing that the blade had fallen into the hands of evil, the church took a risk and melted down the two remaining blades, splitting the steel and mixing it into multiple blades.

Since then the blades have become many different weapons, but always find their way into the hands of righteous people with noble hearts. When they appear they can be almost anything but they are always an edged weapon and predominantly swords of some sort. The Catholic Church once had meticulous records of each weapon made from the originals, but with the destruction of the Knights Templar the records were muddled and now the church estimates the number of weapons being at or around twenty-five.

PCs or NPCs made with a Sword of the Cross in their possession must be a truly heroic person in order to wield it. It is the nature of the swords that they give power to those who will wield them properly; this is to mean someone who will wield them in noble pursuits and not someone trained in wielding such a weapon. A Sword of the Cross grants strength and durability to any proper wielder, but it has additional abilities depending on the wielder's strengths and weaknesses. Ironically, one does not have to be a pious or even religious person to be considered a 'proper' wielder. One merely has to be a truly good person. Needless to say, even that open criteria leaves few applicable wielders in the world.
