The raft rocked rhythmically on the water as it traveled the river through the Hedge. Thorn was never comfortable with traveling off the path, it was dangerous and unpredictable, but his instincts for direction in the Hedge was never wrong, this was definitely the way they needed to go. Even though he could hardly remember, a feeling of familiarity seemed to imprint itself upon his mind. He could hardly believe he was going back, let alone willingly. Still, if there was ever a chance to pull this off, now was the time: *** "In three days? Are you sure?" asked Thorn, eyeing Lilith with the suspicion he always carried around her. She had been of great help to him in furthering his training, and preparing him the eventual fight for his freedom, still old habits died hard, and she was fae, so suspicion always seemed a necessity. "It is the best of time, Lord Wroden never misses a gathering such as this, he is much to vain and insists of showing off his newest toy in hopes to tarry favor from those above him." Thorn didn't bother asking what his newest toy was, knowing Fae it was never anything you wanted to hear about. "You will have until the witching hour before his return, so it is possibly the best chance you have to accomplish the deed." Thorn thought on this, there was no way he would be able to pull this off on his own, he would need to call in some favors. While his talent for deal making had faded with his magic, the few unrepaid favors that remained itched at his mind... *** Of course, he had ended up with a little more company then he had originally sought. Titan and Lil Devil had come to repay the favors they owed, the last of his favors dissolving as they past into the Hedge, but the others... ***** "Oooohhhh" said the small monkey as he rode the top of the pole that steered the raft down the rivers flow, "What's that! That looks tasty, I bet if you took the spike off of it it would wriggle all the way down..." It hadn't originally been his intention to follow, but the shiny thing had insisted on it. Of course it had happened to be Tobor's metal chasse, but still, it was very, very shiny. By the time he noticed him latched on, the portal had closed, leaving the crazy monkey along for the ride. "Someone keep him from grabbing it," said Lil Devil, the last one the monkey had grabbed had exploded. The monkey had loved it, but it had almost set the raft on fire. |

Vimes tossed the spent cigarette in the river and lit up another one, subconsciously fingering the steel pipe in his pocket. Without looking he grabbed the monkey and placed in on his butt on the raft. "Stay" he said. He walked up to Thorn and exhaled. "So what exactly is the plan? Storm the castle and see what works the best? Frankly I don't think that's a plan we want to go with. Titan and I are a little out of our league with this magic thing and somehow I doubt that Lil Devil's magic stacks up to the fairies" "Fae" Lil Devil said with a miffed look on her face. "They don't like being called fairies. I know that much about them. Besides I'm more than strong enough to take on anything we come across, all you have is a pipe. What use is that going to be?" "Who says I'm outta my league here?" Titan said getting into Vimes' face. "I bet I could take you on" "I bet you couldn't, but we have more important things to do. The both of you shut up and let the grown ups talk" Vimes said, his mask showing the disdain he felt towards supers. "I suggest we stay as much out of sight as possible and take down whatever we come across as quickly and quietly as we can so they can't alert anyone else. What's the layout of this place?" |

"Aaawwww, party pooper," said Carlos crossing his arms and sticking out his lower lip is an expression of angst. "An steel pipe would be more effective then you think," said Thorn, knowing full well that it was as close a bane to the Fae as you could get. Thorn thought back to his time in that castle, the momories hazy due to th eeffects he had been under at the time, but he could pull images and memories of what he could remember. He was sure his body also remembered the lifetime he spent there. "From what I can remember, the gardens surround the castle, and that was my prison for 20 years, it is a living maze, the thorns and bushes are alive and dangerous, and many 'enchantments' for Wroden's personal amusement." Thorn could barely recall the other creatures in the maze, though he never knew if they were others like him, or or actual residents of the fae realm. "The castle itself is more like a fortress, what we seek will be in Wroden's personal chamber, which my sources say is in the center of the castle. Its defenses should be divided into three rings, the maze, which should be the easiest to navigate. Beyond that I've never ventured into, but I've been told beyond the gate, the next ring has been named the hall of stained glass. I recall seeing through the gateway once, a lot of color, but that's it. Beyond that I don't know much about it, even my sources are vague on the subject," Lilith had not been clear, saying that it was beyond mortal comprehension to explain the complexities of Fae imaginings. "The last ring before his chambers are supposed to be his 'lab' I guess you would call it." Even Lilith had never set foot in it. When he though on it, he could recall a brief flash of darkness mixed with crimson light, but it was all blured in the darknest haze of childhood and blurred senses. "There is no way to anticipate what is like beyond the gardens. Fae have almost limitless abilities, and in thier homes, it is at their strongest, I don't expect everything will make sense as we go through." The only real advantage they had were the facts that Wroden was not home, he was considered property of Wroden, so they would not be seen as intruders strait away, and that he was familiar with at least part of the terrain. Beyond that it felt like they were stepping into a lions den. "That's not much to go on," said Lil Devil, who had her doubts about this venture, it was one thing to take on a Fae, but to take them on on their home terf put them at a major disadvantage. The raft rocked suddenly as the water picked up speed. Thorn looked ahead, just in time to see the Hedge parting, opening up into a vast an wide view of his once prison. To others, it would be a sight to behold, as the entire realm was overlooked as if from a cliffside. The 'castle' was ivory white, and more like a tower studded with pillers and arches reaching forever upwards into the heavens, overwhich grew vines adorned with flowers and roses. The air was sweet with floral scents. Small geode shapes floated in the air slowly revolving around the castle, speckled with crystals. The gardens stretched around it, as Thorn has said, a maze of bushes cut and adorned to be beautiful and tended perfectly. Even so, glancing at it, it was hard to take in any visible patterns, so complex was the weave it almost hurt to look at it. Even blinking it seemed to change. The river itself seemed to run strat through the air, almost as if one picture was overlaying the other as they passed the border of the hedge, until... The was a sudden drop, as the raft tipped as the water beneath it simple vanished. Thorn had time to look back to see the Hedge fade into the background, a waterfall forming as the realms seperated leaving then suspended in the air. Theh, the sudden drop took then as they plummetted towards the pool of water below... |

"GERONIMO!" yelled the small monkey, jumping off the raft as what supported it vanished from beneath them and diving as they fell towards the poll of water. Thorn was caught by surprise by the drop, having no time to think of what spell to cst. This was his first trip from the Hedge back to the Fae Realm, so he hadn't known what to expect. All he could do was give a yell of surprise as the raft and it's passangers pulmetted in freefall before carshing into the pool below. Luckily the water was deep, which they found as the broke the suface, coming up just in time to see a small form plummet down, and smach into one of the the few rocks that poked up from bottom with a sound not unlike... well, a monkey hitting a rock face first. "ooooooaaacccchhhh" said the Carlos as he layed sprawled over the surface. It hadn't really hurt, but it seemed the appropraite thing to say after doing a swan dive into something with less potential for parting then a cyber nerd from the internet. Thorn pulled himself out of the water dripping wet as he set his first foot back in the Fae realm. "Everyone ok?" he asked. |

Tobor had been silent for most of the ride, knowing from past experience that challenging the Hedge could prove hazardous. When the waterfall suddenly appeared, though, he was ready. He grabbed Vimes and Thorn and activated his thrusters. He wasn't worried about Titan or the monkey, knowing them to be capable of surviving the fall, but Lil' Devil was another matter. Twisting so his head was pointed down, Tobor set his thrusters going and zoomed towards Lil' Devil, not slowing or altering his flight path until she had her arms around what could be considered his neck. He wasn't able to completely come to a halt before he hit, but was able to drop his passengers into the water before he went crashing into the shore. Tobor stood, a little shaky on his feet as he recalibrated his servos from the crash. "Any casualties?" he asked, holding his head still with his hands while his nanotech repaired a few loose wires. |

"No but you ruined my cigs" Vimes said throwing the pack into the water. "So I suppose we should get going huh?" Vimes walked towards the shore and patted Tobor on the arm. "Come on Tinman, let's get you that heart, I'll pick up a brain, we'll get the lion his courage and send Dorothy home so she'll stop getting on my nerves" |

"I get to be the flying monkey!" chimed Carlos, bounding up to Tabor's shoulder. Thorn turned towards the maze up flower bushes, swearing he felt beads of sweat running down his back. Tracing the steps was as bad as reliving memories that had long faded from view. He went many nights with nightmares about this place, and here he was standing at the entrance. For a moment he stoop their, mesmorized by the recolection, until Lil Devil, put a hand on his sholder, bringing his focus back into the present, "You ok?" she asked, "You daze out for a second." "I'm fine," lied Thorn, "Just keep close and keep the monkey from touching anything." "Hey, I resent that!" said Carlos, "I'll let you know I am perfectly capable of, OH SHINEY!" The monkey leapt for Tobors shoulder only to be grabbed by the tail by Titan, who held him upsidedown close to his face. "Don't touch ANYTHING." He growled. "I can see right up your nose." said Carlos. Thorn began leading the way through the maze, pausing every few seconds as he got his bearings. The garden was certianly beyond anything of human engineering, in fact some things that grew defied any logical explianation, and some plants that seemed to grow in more then the usual 3 dimensions, looking at some of the things too long gave one the sesation that their brains were tricklng out their ears. Passing under an arch of blue roses that were simutaneously red at the same time, it became apparent that there were things besides the plants within the area, although whatever they were seemed so integrated into the scenery that they didn't in fact exist in the conventional sense. The effect was impossible to explain without a rudamentary knowledge in the basics of 6th dimensional physics, so the closest thing to say was that they were there and not there at the same time, though that fact alone made them somewhat unsettling. |

After what seemed like an eternity, they finally approached the tower, coming out of the maze of weird plants, the tower entrance opened up into a great expance of white stone tiled with strange designs of an unidentifiable color. It seemed to give off a cold heat that had nothing to do with the sun that bathed it in light. It felt unaturally smooth as ice would be, if ice was warm to the touch. Even the foosteps of the heavy metal Tabor fell silent, as if the subsance swallowed it up before it could fly away. Thorn ignored this, heading strait for the giant ornate door that acted as entrance to the tower. He was not interested in whatever this world was made of, he just wanted to get in and out as fast as possible. How he as going to do that he didn't know. He didn't even know why the Fae Lord would even bother with doors. The door easily streched a couple of storied, the carvings of trees and branches that adoened it so detailed that the leaves seem as delicate light as the real thing, even as far as to sway slightly in the nonexistant breeze. There was no handle, no keyhole, and upon closer examination, no seam upon which the door could turn in. Strange as it seemed to merge strait inot the stone that surrounded it. "This is as far as I've ever come," he said "We need to find a way to open the doors." "No problem," said Titan, stepping forward and cracking his knuckles, walking forward, he lifted a leg and hefted it into the door with all his force. What sounded was a mulled thud that gave note to the ineffectiveness of the attempt. Annoyed at the resilliance of what should have been as easy as tearing through paper, he slammed a fist into the door and pounded it. Not even a scratch was left behind afterwards, and in frustration, Titan grabbed one og the branch like carvings and pulled. "Come on you stupid thing, BUDGE!" As he pulled there was a sudden movement, as the carving moved, the branch whiping out, sweaping Titan off his feet and tossing him 10 feet into the air. The group watched as he landed, the branch curling back into the door and once again becomeing simply a deoration. "That was effective," said Lil Devil sarcastically. |

Vimes shook his head and walked up to the door. He stood there for almost a whole minute before Lil Devil finally spoke up. "What are you doing?" she asked. "Something you people are evidently very bad at. Thinking" Vimes said. He put his hand on the door and felt the carvings, then he felt it. It was faint but he could almost tell what it was. He waited, holding his breath and slowing his heart. There is was again. A vibration through the door. Almost like a pulse. "Are there any more entrances that you know of?" When Thorn shook his head Vimes sighed. "Ok, going to have to get creative here" With that Vimes did was superheroes rarely ever do, he knocked. The carvings on the door twisted and moved until the facade of a face appeared. "What business do you have here?" a booming voice echoed. "We're here to pick up a gift from Lord Wrodon to our mistress, the Lady Titania" Vimes said. "The Master is not here" the door boomed. "We are aware. He wished for the gift to be delivered after the banquet so that he may personally give it to her. We were asked to retrieve it for him as he did not want to carry it all night" Vimes said lying through his teeth. "We are in quite a hurry and I'm sure you wouldn't want to anger your master by making him look insolent in the face of the beautiful Titania" The door was silent for many moments. "Very well. But be quick about it. I could get in trouble for this with the rest of the Master's servants for this" "We'll be out of your vines before you know it" Vimes said with a brief wave walking through the doorway. "Hurry up ingrates of the Mistress will be upset!" |

The face on the door, twisted and vanished as the branches pulled and twisted in unpon itself, contorting and swallowing itself up as the doorway opened inward and outward, letting loose a burst of light as what lay beyond. "SHINEY!" yelled Carlos, diving through the opening before anyone could stop him, while the rest let there eyes ajust to the glare. As his eyes ajusted, Thorn looked through into what appeared to be an entire new world, a adnormally blue sky lovehead was lite by several suns of different size, whough while bathing the area with light, seemed more directed at the thousands of objects that hovered through the air. The group stepped through, and immediatly noteced a difference as the first footsteps they made were accompanied by the small delicate chime of glass being struck. It was then that the noticed that the landscape was more then just ground, but transparent and colorde, a mosaic of colors held together by frame. The objects that floeated in the air seemed like potraits of stained glass, the figures upon them dipicting various people that eyed them intently, but otherwise paid no heed. The suns light seemed to follow them, shining a spotlight of color wherever they turned as they patrolled the landscape. "Hope no one is afraid of heights," said Dev, as she noticed that the glass they walked on overlooked a cloud filled void, no sight of land below, suggesting that if anyone was to fall through, all that they would meet would be the airless void of space. Carlos lay corressing the ground, moments later grabbed by the tail as Titan moved to go, "Come on runt," he said, tugging at the monkey as it made a deathgrip on the fram. "But, SHINEY!" he said almost pleadingly before being dislodged. Ahead lay another tower, but unlike the one before hand, this one seemed more ominous, a twisted mast of frameword that weaved like dead branches sharp edges formed where light sifted through, making it seem like a twisted bush of thorns. It was definatly where they needed to go. Still, Thorn felt hesitant about this landscape. Though he was sure about the stability of the glass beneath his feet, it had a sort of enevitability about it. |

Tobor hesitated at the doorway. The hedges had shied away from him as he moved past, and places where his iron body had touched the architecture looked as if they had aged a bit. He was unsure that he could walk on the glass without it losing structural integrity. "Hurry up Robot!" Titan called over his shoulder, causing Tobor's photoreceptors to narrow in annoyance. Finally he took a step forward, being careful to step only on the framework connecting the pieces of glass. He felt no give as he placed his weight on the frame, so he made his way forward as best he could. "Perhaps it would be quicker if I flew everyone over?" Tobor asked, cranking the reception on his audio receivers to their maximum and straining to hear any signs that the 'ground' beneath him was about to give way. |

"SHOTGUN!" yelled Carlos, prying his tail out fo Titons grasp and leaping onto Tobor's head where he wrapped his limbs in a deathgrip of the shiney metal features. "The sooner we get there the better," said Dev, not wishing to walk the entire way on what could be a space much larger then the tower originally suggested. "Sure you can carry us all?" she asked, though she had no doubt that Tabor had the strength to carry them, she wondered he could do it without injuring any of them, as the robot had been known to ignore the fact that humans were made of flesh and bone and were much more fragile then himself. *** A short flight later, the tower of jagged frame loomed above them, and Thorn felt a dreed menace, a dim recognition of forgotten memories that itched at the back of his skull. He didn't know what was in it, it was like an inbreed fear, something instilled in him at birth, though he suspect it was more of a thing repressed then anything incoded in him. The door was unmistakable, a crystal that shone with an innerlight that reflected radiant light. As before, no way of entrance seemed present. Thorn knocked lightly against it, though the action proved that no sentiances inhabited this doorway. "I really hate this guy," admitted Thorn in frustration. "Please," said Lil Dev, walking forwards, "Allow me," she brushed her fingers against her lips, bent and touched the crystal, whispering in a voice that could have caused even Tobor to have a reaction, "Oh Lord Wrodon, won't you open up and let me in?" The light of the crystal seemed to change to a rosy pink before disolvng into a sprey of fine sparkling mist. "How the heck did you do that?" Said Titan, miffed that Dev had opened a door where his strength had not. "Diamonds are a girls best friend," said Lil Dev seductivly, "And men are men, no matter what the species." Beyond the doorway, the room seemed as black as night. Passing through, it was no where as near the size of the worlds beforehand. A doorway was set directly ahead, a strait line to what would be Wrodon's inner chamber. Here though, throughout the dark, was much more. Twisted figures of stone stood silent in still in expressions of torment, creatures perhaps human, perhaps not. Strange instaments and objects lay about, following the odd way that the fae broke the laws of reality, parapoxical configurations caused the eyes to strain. One in particular, a long table(at least that was the closest approximation), drew Thorn like a magnet. The spirals and spikes that protuded from it bringing flashes of nightmares flooding back to him. He had been here. This was where it happened. |

Vimes shivered. This place screamed bad juju and he didn't want to spend anymore time here than he had to. "Let's hurry this up. I don't like the looks of this place" Vimes said. "Truly you are a miracle detective" Titan said with a scowl. "I'm getting really tired of you ordering us around, you weren't good enough to join the Shield what makes you think you can tell m to do anything?" "I never joined the Silver Shield because I have better things to do with my time. Now shut up and keep moving" Vimes said pushing past Titan. |

Thorn turned from the structure as Vimes approached the door, which creaked as it opened as if it had been waiting for someone to come forward. Bewond, all he could see was darkness, no that was wrong, darkness would have been something, this was much deeper then that, something his mind couldn't even begin to wrap itself around. "Why don't I like the looks of that?" he said, his thoughts turning from this time here and onto the more pressing matter. He approached closer looking through the door to what would be the extreme inner chambers of the tower. Whatever filled the void felt like a distinctive lack of, a slight pulling sensation as if it drew breath to try an fill something that didn't exist. It would take a great philosepher to truely describe what it was, and he didn't have time to figure it out. They still only had a limited amount of time here, and no idea how fast time was flowing. "No use staring all day," he said, and walked through. What awaited felt like a drop, yet his feet were definatly planted on ground. Whatever spacial awareness his body provided him was thrown off by the sheer nothingness about him, sense was abandoned as sight flees momentarily as a light is turned off. A few moments later, however, his body began getting the initial shock of not experiancing anything and began adjusting, and shapes became apparent, he was not sure if this was because his imagination was playing out on the canvas of what was before him, or an actual reality, but he could tell this was probably as close as one could get to what was considered Fae personal chambers without going insane from lacking the nesisary brain functions to process it. As close as he could say, he was standing on a length of roak the floated in a void, while dots of lights moved rather swiftly across his field of vision. Several more 'platforms' floated forming pathways about him. This was where it had to be, he felt in his pocket for the vial, feeling it secure and taking a deep breath. "Look at me! I'm flying!" said Carlos, spinning as he hovered in the air as if sumersualting. It was then Thorn noticed the apparently decreased gravitational pull, which for a small being like the monkey made him essentially weightless. "Ok," he said as the others passed through. "It's got to be here somewhere, keep an eye out for anything strange." he said. "Compared to waht?" said Titan impatiently, looking out on weirdness galore. "Compared to everything else." said Thorn, leaping to the next platform as he searched the void. He was sure it would be symbolic, some item that would stick out in this place, after all, it was from his world, not there's and though it may have been changed, nothing they could do could change the fact that it was something, which would stick out in this place like a sore thumb. |

As the group spread out in the perpetual nothingness, it became apparent that though there was a distinct eternal aspect about this place, finding each other again would be no problem, for it nothing, something tended to stand out like a sore thumb, and it was easy to spot one another in contrast to their surroundings. It was an odd sensation. "Kind of makes you wish for the days when all that was required was to beat something into sumission," said Lil Dev, "A place like this would drive you crazy." She was feeling something akin to vertigo, though in this place she was not sure what to call it, just the lack of anything was making her head spin. Titan seemed to be holdding up better, of course, he didn't think very hard on the philipohical quandry of being something in a place full of nothing. As long as he wasn't focusing on it, it didn't bug him. "What's that?" he said suddenely, focusing on something in the distance. The two moved forward to examine the small object hovering aimlessly through the void. "A doll?" A childs ragdoll hovered there, a phtsical object against the nothing. Titan was about to touch it when more spots of something caught in the corner of his eye. "Look," he said, pointing off into that direction. More objects came into view, small things, like little trinkets and ornaments placed randomly. "Whatever we're looking for must be somewhere around here." said Dev, then called for the others. *** "Guess I'm not the only one they screwed over," said Thorn, examining the objects, "Wrodon must have been 'playing' with mortals for some time to collect this much junk." He moved through the smll asteroid belt, aware of a familiar feeling somewhere in him. Perhaps it was caused by the lack of outside stimulation that made him more accutely aware of it, but he could almost feel a pull. It wanted to be found, attracting him like a magnet. He knew it the instant he saw it. A glttering key that sat there, simple and unimpressive save for the gold plating. Moving towards it, Titan had to question, "That's it? What's it to?" Thorn had to chuckle a little, he had always kept most of them out of some of the more finer details. Vimes had probable figured it out already. Maybe Dev. "My freedom." he said, "When I was a kid, Wrodon cheated my parents and I was forfeit to him. That key is the final binding, the physical form of what ties me to him, my name." He took the vial out of his pocket, the insides glowed like a etherial flame. Within, Thorn knew was his most precious memories. They were the few things he could remember about his parents and the time he had spent with them. He moarned what he lost, but this was the only way. He could not just take the name, Wrodon owned it legally, and in this realm that law was as sharp as swords, unbreakable as steal plate. Still, even fae laws have loopholes... "As payment," he said, placing the bottle in the air besides the key. It hovered there instead of falling. Thorn then reached for the key... ^KEVIN ROSS^ The soundless words filled the void, and Thorn froze, hand inches away from the key, every movement in his body siezed up with the force of everything he was being brought against him. He couldn't move, couldn't speak, couldn't scream. He only knew that something had good terribly, deadly wrong. "How quaint," a voice came, and the others turned to see, or rather not see, the form materializing before them. It was not, 'there', not physical, not something, but seemed to be composed of the nothing substance that surrounded them, somthing there but not there. "I was wondering when you would turn up again." the voice through charming in it's own way, was cold and empty, the kind of voice you felt held a dagger to your back. "I was so worried, it's the first time one of my pets ran away." A lump lodged itself in Thorns throat. Wrodon. It had to be, he'd remember that chilling voice, even in his nightmares, even if everything in his mind was wiped away, that voice haunted and hunted him. Still, he could tell, it was not him, or at least, not all of him, it was as if he was a shell, and echo, a glare of light that remained after it was gone, but all the same, it had the force behind it. He wanted to try and tell the others, but he was bound, caught. Wrodon's image turned to the rest of the group, "And you, you must be the ones who returned him, the poor thing must have been so scared..." As the 'nothing' of his form came into focus, one could see it dressed in truely extravigant clothing of a lord, it's otherworldly nature emphasized by the growing things that sprung out of it as if he was a source of life. Vines seemed to twist across the fabric, every so often flowers budding and blooming before dropping off in rain of petals. "Such an act deseres some sort of reward..." there was something sinister in his voice and almost undetectable undertone then was like the hawk to the sparrow, the focusing eyes of the wolf on the rabbit. |
| Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes. | |
