"Note to self, never trust a monkey for directions." Thorn said to himself, as he saw where he was. This part of the Hedge was deep in the swamp and marshes. The path itself was more like stagnant river, too clouded to seed the bottom. Thorn shuddered to think what lurked beneath the water. The marsh was covered in a veil of mist, a stagnent odour hung in the air, and even the thin veils of light that made it through the canopy did little to brighten the mood.

Looking at the murky water, Thorn could only think one thing. Yeah, right. There was no way he was going to wade through that. Hewalked to the thorns, and concentrated, feeding his magic to the wines, which sprung to life, congragating above the surface of the water, twisting together until a shape took form. A raft of tightly woven briar bobbed on the surface, the thorns dulled to allow one to ride it without cutting ones self.

Forming a crude pole from the thorns, Thorn pushed off of the bank, the raft skimming slowly through the water, causing the mist to part as it pushed through it. The occational feel of a tugging on the pole told Thorn that a raft had definatly been a good idea, as he could only imagine what he may have stepped into. He only hoped what ever was down there stayed down there. It was not long however, an hour or so, before the mist started clearing and the thorns started to appear less dreary. The tightly woven thorns opened up to allow the days light in. In what seemed to be oments, the water seemed to change from merky and clouded to almost clear, in which Thorn could see the polished stones and fish. The bog had turned into a stream, and even more amazingly, the thorns opened up completely into a clearing.

Thorn rarely saw a place that was not covered in briar, but it seemed this place was an acception to the rule, though it was definatly a normal sight by any means. The ground turned from earthy brown and green to a bright pastel pink, and stones became red and blue as oposed to the greys he was accustomed to. It seemed almost childish, cute one might even say. Hen he started seeing simple shapes decorating the area, Thorn began to wonder what kind of witch lived in the area. Then, on a small hill, he saw a small little house, shaped like a mushroom, with a little chimney sticking out the top, all in a peach color. A yellow door stood out, to which Thorn approached. He knocked, but was immediatly greeted by a strange noice almost like the ring of a doorbell when he came in contact with the door. The unexpected sound startled him, but upon testing it again, he found it almost pleasent, though the bright colors were sure to blind him after a while.

"Anne is not home," came a voice from behind him, and Thorn twirled around to look for it's origin, "You can play with me until she gets back." said the voice, and Thorn saw a strange little creature standing just a few feet from him. It appeared more like a littlestuffed animal that was a cross between a teddy bear and a cat.

"Play with me!" insisted the little creature. Thorn was confused, when he had pictured a witches home, he had thought it would be a dark and creepy place filled with strange disturbing things, but this looked like something out of a childs daydreams. "You said 'Anne' was not home, is she the witch?" asked Thorn, croaching to look at the stuffed animal. "Momma Anne lives here, but she's not home, so play with me!" The little thing then pounced on Thorns head, grabbing his mane so that he could not see. Thorn leapt up in surprise, taking the creature with him. Yelling in annoyed indignity, he tried pealing the creature off his face, almost tugging out his hair in the process, however, the creature let go, and Thorn held it away from his face, "What the HECk are you?!" he yelled at it. "Moomfa!" yelled the little creature, waving it's arms and legs happily, "Play with me!"

"And what have we here?" came a new voice, and Thorn turned once more to look at the second person who had snuck up on him in the last few minutes. He was so shocked that he dropped the creature, who landed with a definate 'squeek' before it bounded to the person. "MAMA!" it yelled, clinging to the womans leg.

Thorn could only stare at the woman, who was by no means the typical stereo type of a witch, neather ugly, nor the appearance of an old woman, a head ful of long curly stawberry blond hair and bright blue eyes graced a young looking woman dressed in a peach pink overall skirt and long sleeve white top. The Bonnet she wore had a long pait of rabbit ears sewn on with a green bow, while a set of bells hung from a ribbon around her waist.

"Why are you staring at me like that," the woman said, "Do I have a booger on my face or something?" Thorn had to shake himself out of it, "No, it's just, I wasn't expecting someone so..." He searched for a word, but failing to come up with one, she offered one, "Fancy? Well that's what you see is what you get, I'm Fancy Anne, pleased to meet ya Mr...?"

"Um.. Thorn." said he, wondering how someone like this had found their wa into the Hedge.

"Oh, you!" she said, "I've heard a thing or two about you, that cute little rhyming monkey said you we're looking for me. I thought you'd show up a little later, so I went out gathering lunch, sorry if I made you wait so long. Well, come in so we can have a talk, I can show you my playmates while I'm at it." And with a youthful energy Thorn had only seen in 10 year old kids, Anne grabbed Thorn by the hand and all but dragged i through the front door into her house.

The little cat bear sat outside for a moment and looked back at the woods. It walked calmly and curiously over to a man in a skull mask and a long coat who seemed a little soaked.

"Hi, do you wanna play with me?" it asked.

"No" Vimes replied. "Actually, let's play a game called the secret game. The rules are you don't tell anyone I'm here and you win, but if you do you lose and I win. Ok?"

"Ok!" the thing exclaimed and ran back into the house.

Vimes did not expect any of this when he had followed Thorn here. He had seen a few creatures that wanted deals with him, he had only gotten past the monsters of the river by giving away his last pack of cigarettes to some rhyming monkey in exchange for a raft, which didn't stop the mutant octopus from trying to eat him. Then again that's what the lead pipe was for, he had figured that the stuff Thorn dealt with was like the stories about fairies he read when he was a kid, which is why he brought the pipe. And besides, if he was wrong he still had a lead pipe.

The inside if Fancy Anne's home was just as bright as the decorations outseide, through Thorn had to note that the inside seemed much larger then the outside of the house would suggest. The house consisted of a single room, but three doorframes at the back wall seemed to suggest otherwise, until Thorn noticed that that was all they were, doorframes, with no actual entance to anywhere. The room was filled with various nicknakes, chests full of toys, a blackboard in the corner, a bed along the side of the wall, and a number of mushroom shaped stools and tables. Moomfa ran in the door, each footstep making a squeaky sound as it ran around the room wildly. "Play! Play!" it yelled, in which a few of the toys in the toy chest seemed to spring to life, in which the little creatre began entertaining itself with.

"Can I offer you some sweets, I know I have some tarts floating around here somewhere." said Anne, leaping atop a particularly large mushroom seat and making herself comfortable. As if in response, a tray af tarts floated down from the ceiling and few by Thorn. "Um... No thanks, I'd rather we just talk." He was unsure if he could trust Anne, she seemed sweet, but many things in the Hege were deceptive. "My, the serious one arn't we?" Said Anne, "Ok, shoot, what did you want to know?"

"Word in the Hedge is that your an expert on magic," said Thorn, "I need information on the Fae, I need to get my name from them, but they seem so powerful, how do I get beat them?"

Fancy Anne gave him a once over. "So, your a changling boy arn't you." she said, "I should have known, you sort of have that smell, but anyway, your looking at the wrong person if you want to know about Fae." She said.

"What, but your supposed to be an expert..." started Thorn. "On magic, yes." completed Anne, "But the Fae are something else completely. I know enough about the Fae to tell you that you don't want to play with them, if you do... POOF!"

With that a could of yellow smoke exploded in Thorns face, knowing him back. Thorn looked up in shoock, while Anne laughed. "Sorry, but you look so serious, lighten up a little."

"Anyway, magic falls under a realm different from Fae, it has rules, restrictions, and works under some types of laws. The Fae, however, show little restrictions, either they do not use magic, or they have access to a higher form of magic, either way, it is something no mortal man knows. Sorry."

"But there has to be something, I've been training, and working so hard to be free from them, there has to be something you can tell me!" Said Thorn.

"If it were anything about magic, I could teach you easy, but the Fae are beyond my magic."

Thornhad to turn, he was both disappointed and angry. The more he tried, the more it seemed the Fae were untouchable.

"However..." said Anne, whimzically "There may be someone who can help you."

Thorn turned back quickly, "Who?!"

Anne looked at Thorn, then to her door, "I belive we should all be present for this one," she said, though it confused Thorn, but with a snap of her fingers, her front door tilted and spun quickly, catcing the listener on the other side and sending the Grey Ghost Tumbling into the room.

"If you wanted to be part of the conversation, sweety" she said with a smile, "All you had to do was ring."

Vimes stood and brushed himself off. He avoided giving the doormat and angry look as it had thrown him into the house. He nodded at Thorn and simply looked at Anne.

"I was curious as to what you were up to, Thorn" he said, "You're a good kid, though I didn't quite recognize you without your disguise, I still know it's you. I'll help you out with your troubles if you think you'll need a hand but if you think you can handle it on your own just point me in the direction home and I'll be on my way"

"It's rude to ignore someone" Fancy Anne said.

"I didn't come here to see you, it's just coincidence that we've met at all. Call me the Gray Ghost and leave it at that" he said barely glancing at her.

"It wasn't very bright," said Thorn, "I'd expect you to be more careful then to go jumping through portals when you don't know where they lead." his last experiance with Ghost told him he was someone who could handle himself, but still, jumping into the Hedge was still something he considered stupid. What that said about himself, who did it on a regular basis, he could only guess.

"Oh, lighten up," said Anne cheerfully, who took no offense at Ghosts attitude, "Sometimes the way to learn is to jump in. Anyway, I know someone who may help you, though I would suggest that you prepare yourself properly before you seek him out."

This drew Thorns attention once more.

"If you go outside, you will be able to see a mountain that rises out of the thorns," said Anne, a slightly more serious tone in her voice. "At the top of the mountain, you should seek out the one called Malek, he know much more about ancient things, and he may even help you, but I should warn you, he gets very grumpy, especially if you disturb is sleep. I wouldn't recommend trying his patience."

"Will he want a price?" asked Thorn, knowing that that services in the Hedge usually carried them.

"That depends on his mood," said Anne.

Thorn sighed, "Well, thank you," he said, "You've been helpful."

"Your welcome," Said Anne, a happy grin on her face, then put her hads together as if capturing a frame, "Could you hold still a second? Thanks" A moment later, a cloud of yellow smoke erupted in her hands as a couple of new toys were conjured into existance. "There, these are so cute!" she squeeked in a bubbly voice. Upon closer inspection, the new doys looked like stuffed minitures of Thorn and Ghost, down to a miniture hockey mask. She set the toys on the ground, in which they came to life, waving at Ghost and Thorn before running off to play with Moomfa. "Come by anytime, I enjoy having others to play with." she said.

The Halls of Valhalla, where the brave find their eternal paradise...

"You are sure about this?"

"He is needed, Kiddo." Loki didn't even look up from his workbench, where he was assembling a ship in a bottle by returning a broken bottle to it's unbroken state around the model ship.

"It's not right," Hel replied, towering over Loki's bent form. Those who only knew her as her human self were often frightened by her godly form, but to Loki and the other Asgardians this was her true self. "Souls that are dead must remain dead."

"It's been done before," Loki said, finishing his project and turning around. "There's precedent. You're just mad that I'm asking you to give up something that juicy."

"You're lucky I know just how much we need him around," Hel replied with a sigh. "Fine. I'll retrieve him. I'll bring Balder back..."
