Thorn felt a chill go up his spine. This was a feeling he was getting tired of. In the short amount of time he had known Lilith, he had become aware of just how terrible and powerful the Fae were. He glanced down the alleyway, listening for the small sounds of life that emanated from overfilled trash bins. He concentrated, feeling out the what his magic natural sought a way into. His vision blurred into a different view, black and white and slightly distorted. The dog sniffing around the trash was searching for some interesting smelling meat. A noise caused it to look up, and Thorn could see the alleyway from within, in which he saw the object he was looking for. It was fuzzy to the dogs vision, but it was defiantly there, its sense of smell told him that much. Now all he had to do was get it.

Cautiously, he stepped into the alley, looking around as he moved closer. Halfway into it, he froze, feeling a sudden tingle. Reacting, he dived forward, just as a mass of vines sprouted from the alley walls, twisting around the spot he had just been. He made a run for the end, recasting the magic to hide his presence. Just as suddenly two goblin-like figures sprang from the shadows, blocking Thorns path. Thorn pulled at his resources, causing thorn bushes to sprout beneath the them, and animating them to twist around them before they had a chance to attack. He then dashed past, reaching for the object…

Only to sink elbow deep into the concrete. “Oh, so close,” said Lilith, walking through the wall as easily as if it had been air, “Looks like you’re my prisoner again,” she mused, picking up the empty wine bottle from where it had been placed for Thorn to attempt to capture. “Now what should I do with you, maybe mount you as a trophy?”

“Not funny,” said Thorn, trying to wrestle himself free, but making little headway, “Anyway, it was a cheap trick,” he said frustrated with her games. True, Lilith was training him, but she made no attempts to hide how superior she was to him in every way. “Cheap?” she said, as if insulted, though it was clear that his frustration was amusing her, “My boy, you have no idea what I could do if I so choose, be grateful I’ve only shown you the merest fraction of my abilities.”

“To do what, capture empty wine bottles? How am I going to win my name back like this?” Thorn was growing impatient. Under Liliths guidance, he had learned much more of what he could do, but he seemed no closer to matching her abilities then he had when he started, even with the significant improvements in harnessing his magic. “Simple, you don’t” she said, walking past Thorn out the Alleyway. Thorn felt himself rise out of the ground, before he quickly followed. “What?” he said, not sure if he had heard her correctly, “What do you mean I don’t? Isn’t that what your training me for?”

“Silly child,” she said, “You can’t possibly expect to beat someone who owns you. Simply put, you don’t even have the right to challenge.”

“What? Of course I have the right, it’s my name!” said Thorn raising his voice. He was outraged by this accusation.

“Not in the eyes of the Fae, you ran, and thus broke your contract.” said Lilith, picking out a flower from a passing shop window, passing her had literally through the glass before admiring it up close.

“What contract? I never made a contract!” said Thorn, “And if your talking about the contract my parents made, I never agreed to anything, so how can I have broken anything?”

“It really doesn’t matter what you think, this is simply the way it is, and there is nothing you can do to change it.” said Lilith.

“Then it’s pointless.” Said Thorn, “All this training, it’s pointless. Everything you’ve put me through? It’s all for nothing?”

“I never said that.” Mused Lilith, “I merely stated that you could not win your name back.” She then remained silent, letting Thorn ponder her words, before turning around once more, “I feel like Chinese tonight, take me?”

Bemused as ever Thorn walked by her side, still thinking on what she said…
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Vimes watched from an adjacent building. Definitely interesting. He knew if he kept his eyes open he would find the deal maker again. Though the woman was a mystery. He could never see her clearly enough to remember her face, even when he looked straight at her he couldn't remember anything about her.

He mused over the things they were doing, they were likely Protochildren. Maybe magical of some nature, but he didn't want to go down that road. Not his area of expertise. Though the goblin creatures was new and magic was seeming more likely.

He lit a cigarette and prepared to finish his patrol after watching the two for a bit longer. It seemed like they were playing a game of some kind and he was interested to find out if that game would affect his city.
Do not walk in front of me I may not follow. Do not walk behind me I may not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend.
