The family sat at the table, the mother serving spagetti out to the plates of here husband and child. As they did, they talked, commenting on their days event as the little kid talked excitedly about his day at school. Everything seemed perfect, no worries, no regrets, a feeling of love and confort between them.

Thorn wanted to hurl.

He sat in the branches of the tree outside the house, watching with a growing sick feeling in his gut. Inside were his parents, living out their lives in blissful ingnorance of the creeature that sat beside them. He could see it clearly, the thing made of clay and feathers that so easily had taken from him the one thing that may have brought him some amount of peace. It had taken his entire identity, no one knew he was gone, no one missed him because they believed him to still be that child. At the same time he felt the anguish as he questioned, why couldn't they tell it was not him? How could they fall for it, how could they not see what was wrong with their boy. He wanted to swing in through the window and tell them, demand to have his life back... but he knew that was pointless. He had no proof, he was too old, all it would do is alienate himself from his parents completely, and make himself their ememy. Even if he somehow got close to them, there was still the thing that resembled him, how would it react to his presence? It may harm his parents, or worse. It had the advantage, as they believed it to be him. All it had to do was cry and it could turn them on him easily. Even getting rid of it wasn't an option, as it would bring more pain then he could bare to inflict on his parents. How could he force the pain of his abduction on them?

So he watched, a turmoil of emotion in him, both logging for, and hating the scene in front of him.

Thorn didn't notice at first, so absorbed was he in the scene in front of him, that the a uneasy feeling went unnoticed until he caught the sight of color beside him that stood out against the night. He turned, stunned to see a thin woman in a dress far outdated by the time period in the tree with him, however, instantly he felt a stab of fear in his chest, as he recognized fully the bearing and feel of the woman. She balanced on a limb far to thin to bear her weight, watching Thorn as a cat watching a mouse seconds before it pounced. "Good evening Thorn," she said, a smile on her lips as she stepped with alien grace towards him, the branch not even bending under her movement.

Thorn felt himself shaking, caught like a deer in headlights, it took a moment for his brain to kick in, letting out a gasp of fear, and dropping out of the tree, landing like a cat and taking off as fast as his legs could carry him.

OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD!

It was all he could think as he ran for the fence. He had to skid to a hault when the bushes moved, growing to black his stride, as the unveiled to reveal the Fae woman who stepped out as some wood nymth of greek mythology. "Now now, that's not very polite," she said, as Thorn tried to think of an escape route the Fae couldn't follow. He eyed the long shadows cast by the moon, and wondered if he could open a door and close it fast enough for the Fae not to follow.

"You don't have to worry," said Lilith, as she walked around Thorn, as if examining him, "I've heard of you amoung the court, the little 'thorn' who managed to escape the gardens of Lord Wrodon, much to his humiliation." She seemed entertained by the escapade, as she circled Thorn, who tried his best to calm himself. "Quite an accomplishment for a mere motal, though 'mere' may not be the correct word anymore."

"What do you want?" said Thorn, trying his best to keep his voice from squeeking in a high octave. She could easily do just about anything she wanted to him, he wouldn't be able to do anything, worse, she apparently knew his keeper, which mean't she probably knew his name, and could easily render him powerless on a whim.

"To help you of couse," she said, a slight laugh in her voice, "You are in obvious need of it, I could easily allow you to rejoin your family."

For a moment, Thorn's fears vanished as the hope of being held in his mothers arms once more flooded his mind, but quickly he recalled what it was this creature was, and what prices came with dealing with them. "Leave my family alone," he said, forcefully for the first time.

"It would be simple," she said, a note that seemed sincere in her promise, "I could make it so they knew who you were, I may even be able to make you human once more."

"No," said Thorn, a note of anger in his voice now, "You and your kind have done enough, you can't make everything better by warping us as you please, you can't undo what happened, no matter what memories you alter." Even if what she said was true, even if she could return him to his parents, even if he could forget every thing they did, they would still be there, they would still have done what they did, they would have still taken him, and would be able to do it again if they wished. He couldn't conciously choose to go back to ignorance.

"That is a pity," said the Fae, looking genuinely sorry, "Though, perhaps I should let you think about it. I'm sure there is something you need." She was calm, not at all offended by Thorns tone. It made it difficult for Thorn to remain angry for long. Here before him was a creature of the race that took him. He hated the Fae more then anyone, but he could not deny they had a strange and wild beauty about them. He reminded himself that that beauty was like a wild tiger, and there was plenty of danger from getting too close. However, there was one thing that he did want.

"You know my 'keeper', this Lord Wrodon," Said Thorn, "I want nothing from the Fae, except my name back." he said. It was the one thing he would have to deal with the Fae in order to retrieve. His true name was property of the Fae since he was forfeited to them, and as long as they had it, he could never be truly freed from them.

"I could probably arrange that," she said, bringing her slender fingers to her chin as she pondered the idea. Thorn waited, knowing that the great 'if' was coming. It was probably a fundamental part of Fae existence that everything had some sort of cost. Her eyes seemed to light up for a moment, and a small smile graced her lips. "If you would be so kind as to take me out to a nice dinner, I think I can promise my alliance in this cause at least." she said, leaning towards Thorn with a look that confused him greatly. He wasn't sure this was a trick or not. She hadn't really promised to release his name, but then, she may not have that power to do so directly, since his name would belong specifically to Lord Wrodon. An alliance may be the best she could do, and at least that meant there was someone working towards that goal. Still, he couldn't shake the feeling of being a mouse in the paws of a cat.

"I guess that is a fair trade," he said, hoping that he wasn't making a mistake. "Wonderful," said the Fae, as she approached, linking an arm around Thorns as she lead him from the garden. "I have heard of a thing you mortals like to eat, and I've been curious to try it, pizza, I believe it's called? And it's rarely fun to try something without pleasent company."

"Sure," said Thorn, wondering what kind of game she was playing at," There is a Pizza parlor not far form here, we can stop there, miss..."

"You may call me Lilith," said the Fae, looking amused at Thorns confusion.

It was a while later that Lilith and Thorn found themselves in the pizza parlor. The place had a reasonable amount of people, but they payed no attention to the strange couple. Thorn reasoned that Lilith was disguising her presense. He of course was hidden from prying eyes

Thorn was finding himself more at ease, though it was weird sitting across from what could be his mortal enemy. The fact didn't seem to bother Lilith at all, in fact it seemed to amuse her. She seemed full of life, easy to be around, if you could overlook her unsettling manner of looking at you as if you were a meal. Thorn, despite his contempt for Fae, actually admitted to himself she was nice company. Not to say he trusted her in the least, just that the only Fae he had known was his keeper and his occational guests, and those memories were marred by the magics that had kept his prisoner there, and Lilith seemed very different from what he remembered. She was probably still up to something though.

"Whoever thought of baking fruit with cheese on bread is a genius," said Lilith, enjoying the meal. It was interesting to watch, for Thorn could never remember someone able to eat pizza in such an impossibly graceful manner. "So, the terms of our alliance," said Thorn, cutting to the point.

"Arn't you the serious one," said Lilith, "It's just a simple alliance, nothing to get so worked up over. Mmmm, try the mushroom topping, it's delicious."

"And what is considered a simple alliance by Fae terms?" asked Thorn, knowing that a 'simple' allaince was much more complicated then implied.

"In simplest terms, I do not hinder you, you do not hinder me, and help each other if we so choose, simply a good neighbors pact." Replyed Lilith, as if this should be common knowledge.

"There must be more to it then that." said Thorn, sure Lilith was keeping something from him. "Rules, regulations, catches?"

"Not everyone is as insidieous in their promises, and not everyone is as formal as you." She said, "What I said is what I meant, we're freely allied, no demands, no catches."

"I still don't trust that your being honest with me." said Thorn.

"And that is a pity, but something I will gracefully overlook."

Thorn could not help but be intrigued by her sense of total self confidence.

"Now, I would like to ask about you," said Lilith, and Thorn felt a little shiver go up his spine as if having been cornered. "How is your magic coming along?" Thorn paused, not sure weither answering her would be a good idea. Was she trying to interigate him, find some weakness?

"Fine." he said simply, trying to be vuague about the subject.

"You don't use it much do you?" She said, smiling as she looked at him. Thorn was silent, not wanting to comfirm the truth, but his silence told all. "I thought so, you were terrified when you first saw me, and yet your first instinct was to run, without so much as a glamour to hide yourself." She laughed softly.

"And I'm sure it would have helped against you." he said sarcasticly. She was probably much older then she looked, and she was definatly powerful, even from her small display he could tell that much. He didn't particularly likeusing his magic, as he was sure it would attract attention from the Fae.

"Probably not, but the point is your still thinking like a mortal." she said, as if trying to give him some pointers. "If you have magic, learn to use it. If you do end up having to deal with other Fae, it is better to be armed then unarmed, wouldn't you agree?"

He could not denouce the logic. "Of course, it would probably do you some good to have a few lessons, if your interested?" She said, and Thorn once again had the feeling of a cat staring at a mouse.

Thorn thought about the offer for a long time before answering, all the while, Lilith watched with a patience and demeanor that only a fae could manage. Thorn knew that getting mixed up with Fae was just asking for it, but really, this did fall under their contract. She was offering him help whitch he would be able to use in getting his name back. As she had said it was an offer freely given for him to accept or reject. Although he trusted her as far as he would trust a hungry crocodile, he admitted his shortcomings would make it difficult to defend himself against eminant Fae attack. It was only a matter of time before Wrodon came looking for him, or sent his minions after him, and he best be prepared for that time.

"Ok, I accept," he said, a little more reluctantly then he would have liked.

"Wonderful," said Lilith cheerfully, "This calls for desert," she said, and Thorn noticed that she had finished the entire pizza on her own. Where she was putting it, he couldn't figure out, then again, she was a being of unfathomable magic power, she could probably eat a horse if she decided to. Before he knew it, she had ordered two sundaes.

"So, why the interest in mortal food?" asked Thorn, curious about it, "Surely Fae could conjure up anything a thousand times better then anything you could find here. "

"True," said Lilith, as she sampled the ice cream, "We could make anything, but there is a subtle difference in the quality. If you make something with magic, it has that same common quality. It's not to say that it isn't better, but it is comperable to something mass produced by your machines as opposed to home baked, and some of us prefer to sample that quality from time to time."

"So you consider yourself a connoisseur," said Thorn, interested in the topic.

"Not at all, I simply grew bored with conjured delicacies, and for the moment find it entertaining to sample the wares of those without such advantages." She gave Thorn a knowing look, "I hear you yourself have a few delicacies of your own." she said, hinting at the fruits that Thorn was able to procure from the Hedge. "I am very interested in trying those myself," she said, and Thorn once more felt unconfortable. A Fae finding interest in something you had was not reassuring.
