Thorn walked down the street, deep in thought. He looked at the run down apartments, at the old and unmantained road full of cracks. He watched as people huddled together for warmth around fire barrels, at homes of cardboard and dirt covered children. He couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy towards them. They were lost. He was lost. It was as simple as that sometimes.

It was effortless to blend in, whatever glamour had been worked on him made him appear to all eyes to be as human as any other. He wasn't sure weither that bothered him or not. While he was grateful to be spared the trouble that came with being different, it felt stengely saddening not be be recognized, that the scars of his time away from earth were meaningless. Maybe that wasn't it. It was hard to describe the feeling of hiding, or being hidden.

"Buddy, can you spare some change?"

The voice borke his concentration, and Thorns eyes fell on an old man sitting at the edge of an alley. He was raggedly dressed, thin and frail, but his eyes were warm, and Thoen could see kindness in them. Perhaps it was his time under slavery that made it easy to recognize true kindness rather then the false cold act that his master was so good at exhibiting. This was a man simply down on his luck.

"I can do better then that," said Thorn, kneeling down to the mans level.

"You can spare a meal?" asked the man, guessing at Thorns meaning.

"Well, I could do that as well, but you'll like this better." He gave as warm a smile he could, "How about I promise you that for this day on, fortune will turn in your favor?"

"What do you mean?" asked the man, rather confused, then looked a little scared, "Are you the devil? Are you here to try and trade for my soul?"

"No, no!"said Thorn, never uessing that this was a god fearing man, "Nothing like that, I'm no more a devil then you are." Thorn wasn't entirely sure about that, but he was pretty sure that Fae were not exactly devils. "I just thought you might be interested in making a deal, no soul stuff, really."

"No tricks? Alright, I'll listen, then." said the man, eyeing Thorn with suspiscion.

"Ok then," said Thorn, quickly thinking up the wording to the deal. "Please excuse if this sounds strange, but this I offer you, that your fortunes which are now dry shall flow a plenty, by design or craft, you shall find what you need, and live at ease, hunger left behind. In return this task I ask, the price to set the deal, that for a year and a day, once each moon, each month, a token you offer me, nothing fancy, a scrap of food would do, just something to show we are still friends. This is vital and key, for if you do no keep that small favor, fortune will turn again, and what was given will be taken once more, weither I wish it or not, so the golden rule demands."

"Is this some sort of trick?" asked the man, "Are you making fun of a poor old man?"

"What have you got to lose?" asked Thorn, offering his hand. The man looked at him, obviously not sure weither this was really a deal or just some flim flam, but finally he took Thorns hand. It was slightly cold against Thorns fur, but the man didn't react to his touch, the sensation lost in the glamour so that the man couldn't feel the the claws that brushed gently against his wrist, "Sure, why not, I guess it can't hurt."

Thorn felt the pulse of magical binding. "Then it is done," he said, and got up to leave.

"Wait," said the man, "Where do I find you?" he asked. And Thorn bent down again, "Don't worry, I'll find you." he said, taking a lose thread from the mans coat, knowing that he would have slept with it on him.

Thorn walked away, carefully storing the thread away. He could use it to keep in contact with the man through his dreams. If all went well, the man would recieve a better lot in life. Other then that, it was up to the man to be faithful to his end of the bargain. He had balanced it as best he could to allow the man a better future, he only hoped that man would abide by it, after all, all he had to do was offer him something, he did not actually have to give him anything.

Vimes watched the happenings. It intrigued him, like most things on the street did. The deal maker interested him and he wasn't quite sure why. Vimes was sure he felt something strange in that handshake and he would have sworn that the fellow didn't move right, like he was just an image over something else.

He shook his head as he stepped on his cigarette. He was about to light another when he noticed that it was starting to rain and didn't feel like wasting any. Like the deal maker Vimes disappeared amongst the homeless, they were used to him and he never bothered them as long as they obeyed the law.

He decided to keep an eye out for the deal maker. Find out what he could and see if he would cause any trouble. He jumped up and grabbed the ladder to the nearby buildings fire escape. He calmly walked up, prepared to finish his patrol and then maybe get some sleep.

"You didn't have to come here," Alyssa said, listening to the rain beat on the window. "It's raining cats and dogs."

She and Garrett were in the living room of the small apartment Protogen had secured for her in one of their turf buildings. There were unfinished sculptures all over, along with CDs marked in braille, a stereo system, and bookshelves full of books on tape. Garrett always felt like he was entering a different world whenever he visited Alyssa, and in a way he guessed he was.

"I didn't have anything better to do," Garrett replied, brushing it off. "I'm on leave for the next few days anyway."

"You do realize you scared the crap out of the people downstairs when you came hurtling out of the wall socket, don't you?"

Garrett laughed. "Yeah," he said. "The looks on their faces were priceless. Kilovolt's powers are pretty intense used like that. Anytime you want to travel like that, just let me know; you'll never forget the ride."

"I already know," Alyssa said, smiling faintly. "The memory is playing across your mind as clear as a freshly painted mural."

"Intruding in my thoughts, eh?" Garrett said mischievously. "Well, have at thee!"

"Ewww!" Alyssa shrieked, laughing as she fell back on the couch, holding her head and groaning as she tried to banish the mental image Garrett had sent her. "You're gross!"

I know, but you were asking for it, Garrett told her telepathically. But we're avoiding the subject. There was something you wanted to tell me.

Alyssa sighed and sat back up, leaning into Garrett's shoulder. "There's something coming. Something BIG," she told him. "Something that will have everyone fighting, all the supers fighting each other. And people are going to die."

"What are you talking about?" Garrett asked. "Why are you telling me?"

"I've been having visions about it for the past couple weeks, every three or four days," Alyssa replied. "And I told you because half of the people I saw fighting were wearing Silver Shield badges even if I couldn't see their faces. You're the only person in the Silver Shield I know would take me seriously."

"I don't really know what to say," Garrett said after a short pause. "What am I supposed to do with this information?"

"Just tell your superiors," Alyssa told him. "Make sure they're aware. Maybe they'll be able to see it coming and sop it from happening. I don't know. It just scares me."

Vimes looked at one of the CDs. It was times like this he wished he could read braille, the cover art was interesting none the less. He turned and rested his gloved hand on an unfinished statue, he was always amazed by artists. Able to find beauty in anything. Vimes walked back into the kitchen where he had pried the window open, he tilted his head out to look at the fire escape and the dark clouds up above. He closed the window and opened some of the cabinets looking for something integral to his plans: a glass. Finding what he was looking for he opened the fridge and poured some milk in the glass, one of his coat pockets procured him a bendy straw in a package, simple solution to having to drink with a mask on. He took a seat at the table and drank his milk while looking at the newspaper he had grabbed from Alyssa's desk.

"They never spell my name right" he mumbled.

Vimes froze for a moment as he heard the door open and voices in the other room. Now came the hard part.

"That was pretty cool," Tiny said as he squeezed through the door after everyone. They had just returned from a small club where Alyssa performed several nights a week, and tonight a couple of her fans had gotten up on stage and performed with her, accompanying her guitar with drums and saxophone parts they'd written themselves.

"Sax man sounded a little flat though," Kevin "Jackhammer" Masters said, planting a foot against the door frame and pulling on Tiny's arm to help him through.

"Good drums though," Garrett said. "Anyone want a drink?"

Alyssa stopped him as he started for the kitchen. Someone's been in the apartment, or might still be here. I can feel a draft from the kitchen that wasn't there before, and the window was closed when we left.

Garrett, Kevin, and Tiny nodded to each other and split up, Kevin staying with Alyssa while Garrett and Tiny went opposite ways and began to search the apartment for intruders. While Tiny went towards the bedroom and bathroom, Garrett went into the kitchen with Titan's power manifested (he'd learned the hard way that some of the older buildings in town wouldn't support his weight if he copied Sentinel in the upper floors). When he saw the Gray Ghost sitting at the table he relaxed and called an all clear to the others.

"What are you doing here?" he asked. "Or more importantly, why shouldn't I arrest you right now for breaking and entering?"

Vimes looked up at Garrett and waved his hand towards him. He put down his paper and stood up slowly trying his hardest to show that he didn't want any trouble.

"I'm putting something together, a group of local guys to help me handle the stuff that the Shield thinks is too small for them to look into" he said. "I would like you to join it. If you're interested come to the alleyway behind the Chinese theater on Jefferson Parkway in the Lower Class district tomorrow night. You'll meet the others there"

Done with his talking Vimes put his glass in the sink and stepped out the window and climbed down the fire escape into the alley, without even stopping showing the skill of a true addict he lit a cigarette, nodding at the homeless man trying to keep warm next to a dumpster.

The night was warm, something Roger was grateful for. He hadn't come in costume, but that was because he had just gotten off work and hadn't had time to go back to his apartment to change. He didn't know what the Ghost was up to, but when BatGuy dropped down beside him Roger figured something was up.

"Any idea what he's got planned?" Roger asked, pulling out a cigar and biting the end off before lighting it up.

"Didn't know you smoked," BatGuy replied, moving more into the shadows. "I don't know any more than you, probably. There's nothing big going on that I know of, and I just visited Ver-Man for the latest news. But Vimes always had a nose for suspicious activity; maybe there's something he knows that Ver-Man hasn't heard yet."

"Figures," Roger said, puffing on the cigar. "I don't smoke often, but I enjoy a good cigar now and then. Quiet. Someone's coming."

Roger noticed that BatGuy had completely disappeared, and he continued to lean against the wall puffing his cigar. He raised an eyebrow as he heard the tapping of a cane against the sidewalk, and hazarded a look around the corner of the alley. "Blindman? What are- You're not Blindman."

"No, I'm not. But I am blind." Alyssa stepped into the alleyway, Tiny following her and mostly blocking the alley from the street. "Garrett wasn't going to come, but I thought I could help you out."

Vimes climbed down the fire escape nodding at Batguy before dropping into the alley way. He nodded his head to Roger and tilted it slightly to the side when he saw Tiny and Alyssa.

"I don't remember extending this invitation to you, Franklin" Vimes said.

"You didn't extend the invitation to Alyssa either" Tiny replied.

"On the contrary, Garrett was a long shot but his girlfriend here was likely listening and interested. Doubted she would agree to come if I had asked her directly" Vimes said lighting his cigarette and taking a puff. "The last of our group should be showing up soon"

"Or he is already here." said a voice from the shadows. The darkness seemed to peal back, reavealing Thorn leaning against the wall, the hedgeborn staff in one hand. There was a definate difference in his countinance since their last encounter, though this was to be expected due the the freedom Thorn enjoyed. Indeed a weight had been lifted from his shoulders now that he was no Fae's property. True Wrodon had vowed to get him, but now he had no leverage on him with his true name back in his possession.

"Good to see you again Ghost." he said, a note of respect in his voice. Though he did not always aprove of Vimes methods, he had grown some admiration for the mans getermination and boldness in the persuit of his goals. He also owed him a great deal for his part in the retrieval of his name, though this was a debt that he was willing to repay, as he had an actual choice in the matter.

"Good. Everybody's here. Although I respect the Silver Shield but they've started overlooking the smaller details" Vimes said taking time to look everyone in the eye. "I propose that we start a team to keep track of the 'little things'. Someone has to before they snowball out of control. Let the Shield have the world domination plots, I want to save the people on the streets from rapists and murderers"

Vimes let this sink in for a few moments before speaking again, "What do you say?"

"Suits me fine," said Thorn, honest happiness in his voice, "Got my whole life ahead of me now." It was amazing what freedom did for the outlook on life. Vimes could have probably asked him to walk up to Maleks mountaintop and call the old dragon a big lizard in need of a breath mint, and he would have found it an interesting venture.
