Magic Magic is a complicated thing in of itself. The factor that truly fuels magic is not ones will but ones belief. If you don't really want to turn someone to stone then you probably won't be able to, but if you really want to kill someone like that, take someone's life in that manner then you probably will. Emotion can fuel magic just as easily as force of will and belief can, anger can provide bursts of power, like adrenaline, as can love or fear. There are a few different kinds of magic, basically how you use it affects how it uses you. If you use your magic to cause harm to people, control their thoughts or their actions, then the magic begins to warp your mind until eventually you become this evil thing. However if you just use the magic, without intent on harming or controlling or taking away what living creatures are born with then it will help and assist you to the point of keeping you alive for hundreds of years if you are a simple mortal. Magic comes from life and free will and to use it to take that away warps your mind and eventually your body as well, it makes you hungry for more power and hungry to take more and more away from those around you. There are all kinds of magic users in the world, though most are barely capable of the simplest of spells. People who can see ghosts and spirits have magical talent, the extent however is generally low. It's not uncommon to find a group of magically talented people working together to do greater things or simply to better understand their abilities. There are a few different ways to use magic, the first being the simple spell. Spells don't always require fancy hand motions and words, it just helps most people. Throwing a fireball may simply require throwing out your hand and saying "fireball", or it could require you to make several hand motions and then say something like "fuego", the only real difference is the time it takes. Most spells aren't very powerful by comparison to rituals. With the right ritual and enough power you can do anything in the world. Though the more complicated the action the more power you need, for instance killing someone across town by making their heart explode takes loads and loads of power. Large storms are good sources of power, though it can be lethal to those who try to take advantage of it. Rituals that take advantage of emotions, such as anger or lust, can cause those nearby to become enveloped in the power and fall prey to the emotions and power the spell itself. Magical items, though easier to find then those who use magic, are difficult to find. A magical item can do all kinds of things from shape changing to unbelievable power. Most items power themselves but sometimes they require energy from an outside source to function. Those who are constantly exposed to true magic, such as that used by wizards or demons, become more and more aware of it allowing them to see through illusions and sense the use of magic, though whether they recognize it as such or not isn't clear. Technology Technology is a very common thing in this world and it's rather common to find people who gained their powers through a technological source. Technology always needs a power source, though for some things it can be an almost completely self-reliant reactor core. Teleportation devices are almost completely nonexistent, any available technology of the sort is not openly advertised. The amount of things something can do limits how small it gets, a skin tight body suit can't allow you to lift a building over your head and fire kinetic blasts strong enough to destroy a city block. You have to allow for parts and power. Always keep that in mind. Although technological based powers are common it's not common for some random street thug to come across a battle suit. Always explain how your character came in contact with their advanced technology. Magic vs Technology People strong in magic sometimes give off an aura that can short circuit technology made later than the forties. This isn't a very common occurrence but it still happens. Some magic users have the ability to hex technology into breaking, depending on how complicated the item is this can be a very simple thing. It's virtually impossible for a battle suit or android to be hexed purposely or accidentally by magic into breaking, but something like security cameras and measures are very likely. |
