There are a lot of stories about heroes becoming heroes, but there are never any stories about how heroes didn't become heroes. About how some of the world's most dangerous villains were once heroes, how something goes wrong and they decide that evil is so much easier than good. There are never any stories about the heroes that find out that being a hero isn't worth what they have to give up, what they have to endure what they have to see. There are never any stories about the hero that could have been but was disillusioned and never was. That is our story, a story of a hero named Ace. Ace's story begins in the Lower Class District of Silver City. Adam Warcer wasn't anything special, he was just like any other fourteen year old kid. He went to school, he tried to get dates, he loved to turn on the TV and hear about the heroes of the city. I suppose that he was different from his counterparts in that sense, you see Adam wanted to be a hero. He wanted powers so that he could help people, save people and maybe even, one day, work with his heroes, the Silver Shield. But he knew it wouldn't happen, he was just to ordinary, to plain. However, sometimes fate has a way of changing how people think. Today is the day that Adam Warcer stopped being average and started being extraordinary. Adam was walking home from school as he often did, he got picked on on the bus so he preferred to take an extra thirty minutes to get home, when he passed by the same antique shop he passed by every day but this time something was different. Maybe it was because it was cold outside and the shop promised warmth, maybe he was just curious, who knows, but for some reason Adam decided to walk in and take a look around. Now Adam had lived in Silver City his entire life and had passed by this antique shop for years but had never been inside so he had no idea what to expect. He wasn't very surprised about the shop's content, one wall had old vases and paintings another had lots of furniture and lamps and such. It was the rack on the counter that caught Adam's attention however. From it hung a menagerie of necklaces and earrings. One in particular drew his eyes and held them there, it was a simple leather strap with an ahnk, seemingly made of peuter. Adam watched it as it hung there and twirled according to it's own breeze. "A fine specimen isn't it?" Adam jumped at the unexpected sound and stared at the old man standing behind the counter. He was probably around sixty years old, with silver hair and a receding hair line. His smile was missing a few teeth but still gave the impression that he is one to be trusted. "I said, a fine specimen isn't it?" he repeated. "Uh, yeah I guess" Adam said. "Do you know what that is?" Adam shook his head, "It's an ahnk, a magical symbol of life and power. The ancient Egyptians would depict their gods holding them or standing in them. Powerful symbols. Are you interested in purchasing it? Only ten dollars" Adam stared at the man's smiling face for a few moments before responding with an "Oh ok" and retrieving ten dollars from his pocket and giving it to the man. "Remember young man, the ahnk is a powerful thing, it's not to be tampered with" he called out the door. "Yeah whatever you crazy old man" Adam mumbled as he put the necklace around his neck. The pendent was surprisingly heavy for only being about twice the size of a quarter. The rest of Adam's walk home was an uneventful one and he was greeted kindly by his mother as he always is, nothing had changed. At dinner his mother asked him about it and he told her the truth, about the crazy old man and the antique shop. As Adam prepared for bed that night he stared at his reflection, at the African American boy with mild acne. There was nothing special about him, he wasn't even in shape even though he walked everywhere. Suddenly he felt very tired and went to sleep without even taking his new "bling" from his neck. |

The next morning Adam awoke feeling better than he had his entire life. He felt like he could run faster jump higher and do it all longer. He wasn't sure what it was and he didn't really care. 'Maybe all that crazy talk about the ahnk had something to it, but probably not' he thought as he finished his shower. When Adam wiped the steam from the mirror he almost fainted. Looking back at him from the mirror was not the reflection he had seen when he went to sleep. This person held themselves stronger and had clear skin lacking any blemishes, their muscles were toned without being excessive and the most important difference was the ahnk shaped tattoo on the middle of their chest. 'That looks just like the necklace I bought' he thought 'I wonder where I put it' After this thought Adam immediately began to tear his room apart looking for the necklace. A few minutes into this activity Adam stopped and realized he was going to be late for school. "It's ok, just wear some baggy clothes and no one will even notice" he reassured himself as he ran out the door and down the street. He was sadly dismayed when he arrived at school and everyone was looking at him. Especially the girls, though that part he didn't mind, quickly he found his best friend Mia. "Mia, we need to talk" he said frantically. Mia looked him up and down incredulously. As if she didn't recognize him until she smiled and said, "Adam, what did you do? You look completely different?" "I'm not really sure, but do you think you can help me figure it out?" he said. "Sure, right after school" Adam nodded his agreement and hurried off to class to avoid being late for class. His day went by much longer than he ever remembered before. He was very conscious about his new appearance, it didn't help that people kept asking if he was a new student and that not even is favorite teachers could recognize him. When the final bell rang Adam bolted out the door and found Mia all in the same motion. He grabbed her arm and ran off campus as fast as he could and when he was a good distance away he stopped and looked at Mia, who looked rather bedraggled and manhandled. "What's wrong?" he asked. "What's wrong!?" she yelled, "You dragged me away from the school at like fifty miles per hour! I don't know what happened to you but it's already beginning to get on my nerves" "Sorry" he mumbled as they began walking. After a few minutes of awkward silence they came upon the area where the antique shop should have been. In it's place was a brick wall with a note pinned to it. Running up to the note Adam ripped it off of the wall and read it. Dear Adam Warcer, Yes I know your name. You by now have realized that the ahnk I gave you has much more powerful properties than simple superstition. You will discover that you no longer have physical detriments. Your skin will be unblemished, your muscles toned. You are stronger, faster and more durable than normal people. Don't question why, I've waited forty years for someone to choose that necklace and live the destiny that it brings. You were destined to find that necklace and absorb it's powers through the tattoo now located on your chest. You are destined to become a hero and defend the defenseless. Be wary however, your destiny may need to be realized now or you may have to wait years to truly fulfill your destiny. My wishes of health and luck to you Adam. Adam just stared at the note, he didn't even react when Mia took the note from his hand and read it. She looked at the note and then at Adam and then repeated the process a few more times before folding it up and placing it her pocket. "Too bad those new powers couldn't make you any taller" she said at last. Adam just glared at her comment. However she did have a point. Mia was average height for a fourteen year old girl and she was still only an inch shorter than Adam. Out of the guys in their class Adam was one of the shortest. Personally he thought it was rather ridiculous. He managed to mumble a shut up and then began to walk off toward the old warehouse a few blocks from his house with Mia in close pursuit. Once they reached their destination they clamored inside and got to the second of the five floors. "Ok, apparently I have superpowers now. Which is really cool, but I should probably practice to make sure I have some control so that I don't hurt someone. I should also see how far I can push my powers so that I don't over exert myself. And last but not least I need a secret identity" he said rather quickly. "Hmm, a secret identity huh? How bout, uhh, Ace?" Mia suggested. |

Adam just stared at Mia for a few minutes after her suggestion. "Ace?" he said, "I don't know, we'll put it down as a maybe. Ok, now, I'm supposed to have super-speed and strength or something like that. Let's see how strong I am" Walking up to one of the two hundred pound crates Adam found a grip and began to lift. He could feel his muscles straining but he could also feel the crate lifting from the ground. Once it was off the ground he lifted it above his head and threw it across the room to crash into the conflicting wall. "Wow" was all that Mia could say after seeing this. "Yeah" Adam mumbled surprised himself. "Now let's see how fast you are" Mia said suddenly. "Wha-" he began but was interrupted by the piece of wood hurled at his face. Adam acted on reflex and dodged out of the way in an instant. "Well, we know you're fast" she said sheepishly. "What would you have done if I didn't dodge that?!" he screamed at her. "Easy: Leave you here" she said smiling, "Now I have to get home to do my chores, have fun playing superhero" Adam just stared after her and plopped down on the ground. Pulling his knees to his chest he stared at the wall and thought about all the things that have happened in the past twenty-four hours ago. He almost caught himself wishing things could go back to normal. 'No way, I've wanted this my whole life. It's just opportunity knocking, and I'm going to answer it!' With that thought he jumped up and ran out of the warehouse, he had some more practice to get down. |
