The reason behind this is that certain campaigns will then present more challenges for some characters and in some instances allow certain NPCs to have a major advantage over the characters it is faced with. I would suggest that you try to keep any season your campaign at least close to the actual season of the United States western coast. You don't have to it's just my OCD nature demands I suggest it.
