Pokemon of The Day - Seel

Blood Rogue
The Scarlet Strategist
Today's Pokemon is Seel. Seel and her evolved form, Dewgong, were
my favorite Water-types back in the days of RBY, and she always managed
to find a place on my team, even though I was already using Blastoise.
Ah, the days of naiviety...

...Right. Anyway, Seel obviously won't see as much use as Dewgong in
competitive play. Come to think of it, Dewgong in general doesn't see
much play outside of your generic CPU Battles. Ah well. Let's see what
this little seal can do.

#086 - Seel
Type - Water
Sea Lion Pokemon
Height - 3'07"
Weight - 198.0 lbs

Traits:
Thick Fat: Damage from Fire and Ice attacks reduced by 50%
Hydration: All status problems are healed in the rain

Evolution Chain:
Evolves to Dewgong at Level 34

Appearances: Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, FireRed, LeafGreen,
XD, Diamond

Seel is fairly common in the games. The RBY generation saw Seel appear
in the Seafoam Islands. GSC made Seel migrate to the Dark Cave
entrance outside Route 44. FR and LG add another location to the already
known of Seafoam Islands: The Icefall Cave in Island 4. In XD, A Seel
can be snagged from Cipher Peon Egrog in the Phenac Stadium. Finally,
Seel appears by surfing on Routes 226 and 230 in Diamond; Us Pearl
owners will instead find Spheal.

Moveset:
Trait: Hydration
Item: Wet Rock

Stats:
HP: 334
Attack: 189
Defense: 209
Special Attack: 189
Special Defense: 239

Surf
Ice Shard
Rain Dance
Safeguard

-----------------------------

Seel has a very uninspired name. Seriously. It's like the translators
stopped getting paid or something for making these up. But anyway.
Seel is obviously an unevolved Pokemon with that nasty unevolved
taint on her stats. However, that doesn't mean she can't wreak havoc
in unevolved Pokemon battles.

Surf? SURF? THIS IS MADNESS!

Madness? THIS! IS!POKEMON!

...Anyway, Surf is quite obvious for a Water Pokemon, yes? Use Surf,
hit enemy, repeat.

Ice Shard is even crazier than Surf. However, Seel practically neecs Ice
Shard. She's too slow to ever hit something on the first shot. Ice Shard
lets your Pokemon always go first in battle. See what you have to do
here? If you don't, go see a doctor or something.

Rain Dance is here for the obvious reason of increasing the Power of
Surf. However, it has other uses for Seel, which i'll get into later.

Safeguard can be Dewgong's safety net should something go wrong.
For example, if you know that your opponent likes to mess with status
effects, Safeguard can keep you protected from that. It also stays in
play even if Dewgong leaves, letting you give your allies protection, if
only for a limited time.

Hydration is like Safeguard in trait form with a twist. It only works in rain.
This the the purpose of Rain Dance. In addition, the Wet Rock you'll
have Seel hold increases the numbers of turns the rain stays on the
field, giving you a longer Safeguard.

Seel doesn't get much in the alternate moves department. Rest works,
as does the Egg Move Signal Beam, but Dewgong can learn this through
the Move Tutor, anyway, so we'll save that for her.

That's Seel for you. Join me tomorrow for another Pokemon Of The Day!
