Chapter 5: Who Ya Gonna Call?
Kit's sleep was troubled that night. He was awoken due to the hall lights flickering. He went out to inspect, but no one was in the hallway. He went back to sleep, though not easily.
The next morning, he found that Reed was teaching a class on Ghost Pokemon. This wasn't unusual, as Reed tought many classes on Pokemon mythology, paranomal activity, and paleantology. He thought in the back of his mind that ghosts were to blame for the strange developements of the night before, so he thought Reed could shed some light on the situation.
As this was the first class of the year, Reed mostly went around introducing himself and getting the students to interact with one another. However, Kit eventually raised his hand to ask a question. "Yes, Kit?" Reed asked.
"Are ghost Pokemon actually ghosts?"
Reed was somewhat surprised that Kit was actually trying to ask questions on his first day. This was a fairly deep question to boot. Reed had to think for a second on this. "Well, not exactly. They do resemble what most people believe ghosts look like, and exhibit ghost-like behavior, but, in my opinion, they are not actually ghosts."
"So, if they exhibit ghost-like behavior, that means that they can haunt places?"
Again, Reed paused and thought before answering. "Yes, there have been reported places where ghost Pokemon have been supposedly haunting places. Particularly cemeteries, such as Lavender Town in Kanto, and Mt. Pyre in Hoenn."
After class, Reed pulled Kit aside. "Kit, do these questions have any real-life importance?"
"Well, last night, the hallway lights were flickering on and off. I got up and checked the whole hallway, but there was no one there."
"Hm. I don't think it's exactly safe to say for sure that it's a ghost Pokemon yet. I'll have the school's electrician check it out."
--------------------------
The dorm's wiring proved normal, and after several nights of similar activity, Reed thought it best to examine the dorm. About midnight, when everyone was asleep, Reed went into the dorm. He saw the blinking hallway lights that Kit had mentioned. He moved quickly, Absol at his side, throught the hallway. He quietly woke Kit up and asked him and Shinx to help him with the ghost.
"There have been stories of poltergeist," Reed told Kit, "that are interested in a particular 'host', usually a young child. I thought that since you're the only one who's noticed this, you're a safe bet to be the host." Kit gulped and moved a little bit closer to Reed at this remark.
As the four of them were patrolling the hallways, they noticed another flickering light from an adjacent room. They investigated, and saw that it was a TV showing static. While Reed diverted his attention to the room, Kit went to turn the TV off. However, it quickly came back on. Without turning around to look, Reed said "Kit, stop messing with the TV."
Kit went to turn it off again, but it again came back on. The process repeated a few times, a Kit started to see that the static seemed to be forming a picture.
"Kit, I said stop," Reed said.
"Reed."
"What is it?"
"Look."
"What?" Reed turned around and instantly started when he saw what Kit was pointing at. The picture that the static was forming appeared to be a creepy smile. The two brothers and two Pokemon stared at it for about a minute, then Kit began to creep forward and lightly tapped the TV. As soon as he did, a small red Pokemon burst forth in brilliant light, quite literally bouncing off the walls. It repeatedly shouted "Rotom!" and giggled mischviously. It flew around their heads and smacked Reed in the face. "Absol, catch that thing!" Reed shouted as his started to get back up. Absol gave chase, but Rotom simply giggled and flew through a wall, which Absol slammed into. They all ran through the door in an attempt to give chase, but Rotom was gone. They all stood there in disbelief. "Shoot," Kit moaned.

Chapter 6: Welcome to the Family
Kit was walking with Shinx the next morning when he heard the announcements begin on the loudspeakers. Aside from the usual everyday things, like the cafeteria's menu today, or the students that were needed in the Headmaster's office, there was one announcement that caught his attention.
The older student reading the announcements stated "As per Academy traditions, we will be holding our annual Start-of -Year party and battle tournament this Saturday. All students are welcome to the party. However, to participate in the tournament, students must sign up with Professor Jameson in room 357 of the north wing. Also, students must have a minimum of three Pokemon before applying."
Kit cringed at the end of the last sentence. Shinx was his only Pokemon, and he only had a few Pokeballs to use. "Well, I could always give it a try," he said. "What do you say, Shinx? You think you could use a friend to battle with?"
"Shinx!" it said eagerly, and rubbed Kit's legs.
"All right, then! This afternoon, after lunch, we go out and search for some Pokemon!"
-----------------
At 1:00 that afternoon, Kit and Shinx were finishing their lunches when Morgan walked by. "Hey, Kit?" she said. "How is everything?"
"Just great, thanks," Kit said, swallowing a mouthful of food. "Shinx and I are gonna go out and look for Pokemon to catch as soon as we're done eating."
"That's great, Kit," she said, rubbing his hair. "But, do you know where you're going to look?
Kit got ready to answer, but stopped, thinking. "You know what, I didn't think about that."
Morgan laughed quietly, making sure Kit didn't here her. 'He's so eager,' she thought. 'He just needs to learn to slow down and think.' "Well," she said. "I'd recommend going to the tall grass behind the tournament stadium. Wild Pokemon usually hide in there."
"Sweet!" he shouted. "Thanks, Morgan!"
"You're welcome, Kit. Do you want me to come with you?"
"No, I wanna do this by myself."
"Okay." She chuckled again. "Good luck. Also, see Reed afterwards. He'll probably want to see your new Pokemon."
---------------
As soon as he could get over there, Kit was lying prone in the grass behind the stadium, Shinx at his side doing the same. They moved very slowly, alligator-crawling and searching for suitable Pokemon. They ran into several bug Pokemon, like Caterpie and Wurmple, all of which ran away too quickly to be caught. They went after several Pidgey and Spearow, none of which worked. They were down to their last Pokeball, and Kit was about to give up hope. Then, Shinx nudged up against Kit and gestured to its right. Kit looked over there and saw a little black bird Pokemon land in the grass.
"That looks like a Starly," Kit whispered, to which Shinx nodded. "You think you've got enough fight left in you to take this?" Shinx nodded and grinned. "All right, give it a Quick Attack." Shinx dashed forward with blazing speed, and tackled the Starly head-first.
"Okay!" Kit said. "Now Tackle it a few times!" Shinx repeatedly rammed the Starly, who was too busy recovering from the hits to fight back. Kit pulled out his last Pokeball threw it at the Starly. "Please work!" he shouted as the Starly was drawn into the ball. Shinx and Kit both stood there watching it as it shook. Then the red light on the ball went out and the ball stopped shaking.
---------------
As soon as Kit was done healing Starly and Shinx, he was knocking on the door to Reed's room in the staff housing. Reed answered the door, and Kit was instantly waving the Pokeball in his face, repeatedly announcing that he caught his first Pokemon.
"This is great, Kit. I'm assuming that you did this because of the tournament coming up."
"Yeah, but I'm still one Pokemon short. I'm out of Pokeballs, and it'll take a while to save up enough for more."
"Tell you what," Reed said, reaching into his backpack. "We can help each other out." He pulled out a Pokeball and handed it to Kit. "Now, in this ball is Ralts I caught a while ago. I'm giving it to you.
Kit didn't respond for a second. He eventually responded, "How come?"
"Well, I've been meaning to do research on Ralts's evolution. Ralts have been known to evolve into Kirlias, and then into Gardevoirs, both of which tend to look like women. However, a Pokemon researcher, while doing field research claimed that they saw a masculine Gardevoir. Ever since, several scientists have been trying to figure out if these new Ralts evolutions exist, and if so, what causes Ralts to evolve into them instead of Gardevoir. If you help me with this, you can keep Ralts."
"Thanks," Kit said, tucking the Pokeball away. "I'll do my best."

Finally! School's been keeping me busy, but I finished a new chapter.

Chapter 7: Ding Ding! Round One Starts!

Kit was getting dressed in his room for the party when there was a sudden sharp knock at the door. Nicholas shouted from the other room "Can you get that, Kit?"
"Sure, no problem!" he answered, and went to open the door. There was a boy standing there that was a little bit older than Kit. He wore a t-shirt with a flame on the front, blue jean shorts, and a backwards baseball cap. "Oh, hey." he said. "Is Nick here?"
Kit heard Nicholas's voice again. "Oh, hey, Andrew! I'll be out in a second!"
"Mind if I come in?" Andrew asked.
"Sure," Kit said.
"Who are you?" Andrew asked.
"I'm Kit, Nicholas's roommate."
"Wait, Kit? You're Vince's brother?"
"Yeah."
"Ah, sweet! I'm one of Vince's friends. And, as you guessed, Nicholas's. Vince told me he had a little brother coming here."
"You know Vince?"
"Yeah. We both went to a lot of the same classes last year. Naturally we became friends."
"You went to the Academy last year?"
"Yeah, it's my second year."
"So how do you know Nicholas? It's his first year here."
"Oh, we've been friends from a long time. We grew up together in Fuschia City."
"You grew up in Fuschia City? Did you ever go to the Safari Zone there?"
"Yeah, a few times."
"I've always wanted to go there. What's it like?"
"Really big. I got lost in there a few times. I never had any luck though."
"What Pokemon do you have?"
"Well..." Andrew rubbed his knuckles on his chest proudly. "I don't like to brag... but, I'll let you see them." He pulled out two Pokeballs. "Hop on out, you two!" he shouted, and released the Pokeballs. Two Pokemon, a small gray dog and a raccoon with a zig-zag pattern in its fur, jumped out of them.
"Oh, cool! I've seen these! They're.... uh, don't tell me... Zigzagoon..."
"That's one," Andrew said, watching Zigzagoon run around the room. "The other's name is Poochyena."
"I can never remember that one," Kit said. He watched Zigzagoon almost literally bouncing off the walls. He then noticed that Poochyena was simply lying there next to Andrew's feet. "Your Pokemon are so different," he said.
"Yeah." Andrew scratched Poochyena behind the ears. "Pokemon have different personalities, just like humans."
Kit hadn't though about it, but he did notice that his Pokemon did act very differently. Shinx was very outgoing and loved attention. Ralts was shy and kept to itself. And Starly was in the middle, content with however people treated it.
"Can I see your Pokemon?" Andrew asked.
Kit thought for a moment. "Sorry," he finally said. "I'm in the tourney tonight and I want to keep it a surprise for people."
"Understandable," Andrew said. If I can, I'll keep my strategy a surprise for my opponent."
At that moment, Nicholas came out from the other room. "I'm ready," he said. "You guys wanna go?"
"About time," Andrew said, punching Nicholas in the arm.
"Come on!" Kit said. "I don't think I can hold on any longer."
-----------------------------------
When they arrived at the party, held in the tournament stadium, most of the students had already arrived. There was a stage with instruments and amplifiers set up, but for right now, recorded music was playing.
"All right!" Kit shouted. "This looks like my kind of party." He looked around. He didn't see Hank anywhere. But he didn't see his siblings either. He shrugged. 'Find them later, I guess,' he thought. He turned to Nicholas. "I'm thirsty. I'm gonna get something to drink."
Nicholas nodded. "Okay. See you later."
Kit went over to the refreshment stand and grabbed a root beer. 'Good thing they've got my favorite,' he thought, then turned around to head toward the main section of the floor. When he did, he bumped into someone and nearly fell down.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" the other person said. Kit hadn't looked at the other person yet, but he could tell clearly by that the voice attached that it was a girl that he had bumped into.
Kit looked up to apologize. "No, it's my fault," he said. That was the only thing he got out, though. When he looked towards her, he sort of froze.
"Okay," she said. She wore a bright yellow shirt and a pink skirt. She had short brown hair. She looked to be maybe eleven or twelve years old. "I don't think I've seen you around here. I'm Sarah. What's your name?"
Kit stood there for a moment. He struggled to get his words together. "Uh... M-m-m... My name's ..... Kit."
"Kit, huh? Nice name."
The process repeated. He was now aware that he was blushing. "Th-th-th... Thanks."
Another girls' voice called Sarah from the other side of the stadium. "Oh, sorry," she said. "Maybe I'll see you later."
Once she was out of sight, Kit seemed to regain composure. He slapped himself in the face to make sure he was all right. 'Geeze,' he though. 'What was that back there?'
A voice over the stadium's loudspeaker grabbed his attention. "Students and professors, thank you for attending this year's Year-Start Party! We are now preparing to start the first match of the tournament! If you will please look towards the Jumbotron, we will show the participants of each battle in the tournament."
Kit looked up towards the screen and saw names of various students flash along. They eventually came to a halt.
'Not me,' he thought. He took a sip of his soda. 'Oh, well. All I can do is wait.
