An apology was a start; it was the least the Healer could do right at that moment. The most that he could do was deliver this baby without any further complications but he would to hope for that outcome. The whole situation was suddenly very risky and very shady- women were supposed to have instincts for normal labor not paralyzed-from-the-waist-down labor. Now she had to push 'as she was supposed to' and if she did then the baby 'should not have any complications'. Carlos had a feeling that by the end of that day he was really could to detest the word should. And this healer, because Carlos could understand being understaffed, he went through it at times at the restaurant, but he always, always kept a polite demeanor with the customers. ...Yes, he was aware that doctor and cook weren't exactly on the same level to be able to be compared, but the point was that was not only the healer inadequate, he was also rude. He had half a mind to point that out to him but both he and Athena were focused on other, more important matters, entirely. As the healer said that it'd be beneficial if Athena calm down in order to calm the baby down, in a condescending and insolent manner, Carlos rubbed her hands more, going back whispering quick and quiet thoughts of comfort and relief in her ear. Athena kept at it for half an hour. Half an hour she had been pushing, with no idea on if she was doing well- she was going at this blind. His hand was still holding on to hers, while the other wiped away some of the sweat, and pushed back her hair. It wasn't much, but he hoped that it was offering some sort of help even if it was minimal. Athena slid back into her bed after the last contraction, disturbed by how she worded the comment. If the baby wasn't coming out yet, what did that mean? Was she not pushing hard enough? He hardly thought that was it because Athena was downright exhausted, she was all but collapsed on the hospital bed. He turned to the Healer, "Why isn't it working? Isn't there ...another way or...?" He was immediately thinking about a c-section because by default that was the only other way left, but the thought of it was unpleasant, and he didn't think that would be safe anymore. Turning back to Athena, he tucked a piece of hair behind her ear as she remained laying down with her eyes closed and he squeezed her hand. "Athena, sweetie, I know you're tired, but you can't sleep yet, mi cielo." |

It was hard. Athena felt - in some part of her mind that really knew this was real - that she was ruining everything. She wasn't pushing hard enough, or she was pushing too hard, and she was going to hurt their baby. Further more there was some kind of detachment to this all. It wasn't like she wasn't working for this delivery, she was working really hard, but the lack of feeling and progress really just made it feel like nothing was happening. Maybe nothing really was happening. Maybe they overdosed the baby with the epidural too and she went into shock and died. Maybe a dead baby was going to come out of her stomach eventually. Maybe this whole thing was just a waste of time and energy and effort. She didn't want them to cut into her, obviously, because the scar would be atrocious but at this point if this was really happening, she just wanted it to be over. Once it was over she should be able to sleep, and then if she could sleep, when she woke up her legs would come back. Or, alternately, if she could just wake up now, she wouldn't be in this stressful situation. "It's working." The healer told him briskly, "But the baby has a long journey before she crowns. There's no consistency in the pushing; sometimes it's too hard and I see the baby's head for a second before she slides back in, and sometimes I don't detect any motion at all." This was a problem, obviously, but it wasn't one he could correct. She couldn't feel what she was doing so there was no point in telling her 'push a little softer' or 'come on, push harder'. This was just going to have to be as trial and error on her part. "But she is most definitely still in labour." The suggestion of another way made the healer sigh; he understood the anxiety of labour, he did. But so many parents would rather just be put out and not have to do the work at all, just be put to sleep and bam, there's a baby. "There's no cause to a c-section." However, there was something he could do to help. The healer sat up a little straighter, glancing at his patient as she was trying to sleep, and placed his hands on her stomach. "What I'm going to need you to do is press down on her stomach here, leading towards her cervix when I start counting for the contraction. It'll reduce the space the baby has to retract. If we can get her crowning, I can help guide her out." He sat back down in his place, waiting for the next contraction. Athena was doing a good job of ignoring everything, but when Carlos squeezed her hand her eyebrows furrowed, his voice cutting across her concentration to make herself pass out. "I'm trying to wake up." She disagreed with him, face crumpling as she heard the instructions to push again. "This isn't happening." But because she didn't want to watch this dream turn into more of a nightmare and have this delivery be a flop, she did sit up just a little, bearing down as hard as she could manage through the counting. She still couldn't feel a damn thing. Edited by Athena Stryker, Apr 13 2011, 02:44 PM.

Carlos' patience was wearing thin. Not with Athena, not with the labor, not at all. It was the Healer- he was really losing patience with this Healer. The man had been short and cross with them from the beginning and yes, Carlos understood that maybe he was perhaps being a tiny bit rude but with the amount of pregnant women these Healers dealt with, they should be used to rude people. He and Athena were scared and worried and the man was doing nothing to help alleviate that. Except of course, trying to deliver their baby who was still stuck in Athena's womb and couldn't get out. After this was all over, he really hoped he'd never have to see this man ever again. Still, Carlos nodded when the healer explained further, showing that he understood. Oh Carlos understood that because the healer had messed up the dosage Athena had to go through this abnormal childbirth where she was practically drawing at straws to try and push their baby out, he understood that perfectly well. Merlin knew how long they'd be here trying to deliver this baby. How was the baby being affected by this? Was she going to be alright, and perfectly healthy because of this? For the healer's sake, for this whole hospital's sake, that better be the case. Carlos nodded again as the Healer instructed Carlos to help with the delivery by pushing down on her stomach when the next contraction came about. To be truthful, Carlos was glad to be able to do something other than hold Athena's hand as she pushed. Normally, that would suffice with any other labor where a hand to hold on to was of greater help yet seeing as how they had incompetent people doing this delivery, that wasn't the case. He sighed as he heard Athena pulling back into denial, and all he could do was move a strand of hair that was sticking to her forehead out of her face and behind her ear. "You'll get through this, preciosa, you can do this." No thanks to the Healer. As said Healer instructed Athena to push again, Carlos pushed down on her stomach like he was instructed to, hoping that they'd make some progress. |

Athena was beginning to wonder if this thing was ever going to end; she wondered if her feet would start tingling, if she would ever get feeling back, if she would be able to push out this baby...Or if she was just going to lay here with fingers probing into her and hands pushing on her and apparent contractions happening that she she couldn't feel whatsoever. Things were a starting to sound like a broken record flying through her head again. What if. What if. What if. Though she was exhausted, she still was curious to watch as she apparently just started another contraction. She pulled herself into a further incline, watching Carlos' hands push down on her stomach. Really, it was just down right strange that she couldn't feel that...she could only assume it would have hurt like hell if she had been able to. As would the healer's next announcement that the baby was crowning. However, he didn't even get through his statement before something else had started ringing in the room. The entire time the baby monitor had been on, the pattering of the fast little heartbeat speeding up and slowing down as she pushed and breathed. At the stage of crowning though, the heartbeat sped up faster, even faster than it had been at the beginning. Faster and faster it beat until in one sudden moment, the beat stopped completely. Silence filled the room. Seconds later the healer was pulling his gloves from the baby's head and accioing a vacuum, attaching it to the head of the baby. To Athena, it just looked like some metal cone thing was extending from between her legs. "What is that?!" She asked, more shock than anything else. "Push." The healer told her, trying to guide the child's head out of the passage as fast as possible. With the assistance of the pushing and the pressure on his patient's stomach as well as the suction of the vacuum (less likely to cause damage than forceps), the baby should have come out easier. But apparently the baby wasn't ready to come out and she was already as stubborn as her mother. It took a lot of careful pulling, but soon the baby's head popped free of the cervix. It was about that time that Athena dropped back onto the pillows, dizzily sucking in air. There was a baby head stick out of her vagina. With gory stuff on her. Out of her vagina. There was just so, so much wrong with the image and she almost thought she felt it for a moment. She didn't; it was ghost feeling, but it still made nausea clog her throat. Once the head was out, the healer twisted the baby's shoulders and the rest of her thin body slid the rest of the way out. There was no cry; the baby had been in distress at that last peg of the delivery. Quickly the healer cleaned out the newborn's air passages, gently stimulating a heartbeat. That was all it took. One second the room was silent, the next, a high-pitched scream wailed through the room, the baby girl turning red underneath the mess the healer was cleaning off her. After cleaning her up and tying the cord, he offered the cutting space to the father. Looking way more awake and alert than she had been in a good hour, Athena had moved to sitting up once again, trying to get her first glance of her daughter...outside of her womb. It was only after Athena heard the cry that she really comprehended what just happened. In that second, had they almost lost their little girl? She'd heard the heartbeat monitor go silent, but it hadn't really connected with her what that meant. The metal object between her legs hadn't made sense to her, not until it was gone. She was bleeding, a slow trickle from the red and angry area, but it apparently wasn't that big of a deal. What was a big deal was that her daughter had entered the world, and she wanted to meet her. |

The baby's head was crowning, Carlos exhaled silently in relief. He might not know to a full extent and detail what that was, or rather what it looked like, but he knew what that meant: they were making progress. Of course, it also meant that Athena had maybe half a baby head out of her vagina and thinking about it too deeply probably wasn't the right idea at this time given the fact that every other aspect of this labor had been scaring them enough. Funny, he never thought that there would be something to be more scared about in the delivery room than the actual delivery. As he heard the sound of the accelerating baby heart monitor however, he knew he was very wrong. The machine was beeping like crazy, the sound emitting increasingly more frequently, and Carlos could swear that the sound was getting louder and louder as the time went on. For however long it felt like it lasted, the reality was that the monitor stopped beating relatively quickly. The lack of sound was worse than the attack of beeps they had received just a small second later. Carlos' heart dropped in his chest, as he realized that the lack of sound meant that the baby's heart could have stopped beating. "What happened?" He asked hurriedly, worry lacing his words as he saw the healer accio'ing medical equipment to his side. Medical equipment that looked disturbingly like a vacuum. Was the healer going to vacuum out their baby? As the Healer instructed Athena to push for another contraction, Carlos pushed down on her stomach once more, despite the fact that he was cautious now that the baby was crowning...he didn't want to do anything wrong and there wouldn't be side effects. He had never heard of a baby being vacuumed out before; he didn't know a damn thing about. After what seemed like an additional eternity, they made more progress and the entire head was sticking out. Again, another image that was pretty unpleasant to consider, but one that he would rather he facing rather than the potential of paralysis and who knows what for their daughter. All he knew was that he wasn't going to even think about the possibility of something being wrong, of their daughter being... See? Not even considering it, and he was happy to do so at the moment. He was just too damn stubborn today to allow anything to go wrong. Everything was going to be alright, because it had to. Then the rest of the body followed, and Carlos saw a small, bloody, wrinkled, fetus-gunk covered baby in the Healer's arms. Problem was that the baby wasn't crying and babies were supposed to cry when they were delivered. Carlos' own heart stopped for a second, his breath caught in his throat as he watched the Healer work over their daughter. He wanted to be able to ask if she was going to be alright, and what was happening but he couldn't muster words at the moment; his mouth opened but his lips didn't move in the words. A few seconds later and breath returned to Carlos as he heard the baby cry out a high pitched wail. Right at that moment he couldn't think of a more beautiful sound. He breathed in relief, and looked back down at Athena, realizing now that somehow during the middle of this he had reached for her hand again and was squeezing it. He helped her sit up as he noticed her sudden alertness and interest start back up again before he moved only slightly away to cut the cord, his eyes still moving in wonder over the small, fragile looking body of their daughter. "Can we hold her?" Carlos asked in quiet awe, putting together the words that Athena could not, just as he had been doing throughout the ordeal. |

It seemed like Athena had lost the ability to really understand was was going on the second she lost the ability to move the lower half of her body. Everything just seemed to be a rush; telling her to push quickly, making her push and push and feel absolutely nothing, Carlos pressing down on her stomach, some weird metal vacuum thing being attached to the head of their baby, the same head that was literally sticking out of her vagina... None of it really seemed like it was happening whatsoever. She didn't feel like she was an active participant in the baby's birth, even though she had begun to accept that maybe this was happening and maybe she was paralyzed and maybe her baby was in distress which would be why the heart monitor stopped beating... And then the baby was free from her, and finally Athena didn't have to keep pushing. The healer didn't bother to answer Carlos' question, far too occupied trying to deliver a healthy baby despite all the challenges that were presented to him. Challenge, as opposed to an accident. Accident had such a negative connotation; he preferred mishap, or better, challenge. There was definitely a sense of accomplishment and pride on the healer's face when the baby started crying, finally looking between the parents. No harm, no foul. The child was fine, the mother would be in a day or two, and she hadn't even ripped anything. It was truly a win-win situation, of course. Once the cord was cut the healer turned and handed the newborn to an acolyte who had come in at the sound of the cry, letting her walk the baby over to a small side table to perform the apgar test and clean her more thoroughly. "As soon as the acolyte has finished the tests, you may hold her." The healer told Carlos, returning to his place at the foot of the bed. "All we need to do now for you is have you push out the placenta. It won't hurt a bit; they usually just slide right out." Athena's eyes had been locked on the baby they were taking out of her reach when she heard the healer's comment, eyes narrowing in a slight glare. "Of course it won't hurt." Because she still couldn't feel anything. Still, she was ready to be done and pushed obediently until the healer said otherwise, ignoring the fact that he was cleaning her up; she couldn't tell if she wasn't watching anyways. Soon the bed was leaned up from all the blood and placenta and Athena was sitting back against the pillows, clean sheets resting over her numb legs and her hand still in Carlos'. The healer left the room with a simple congratulations, leaving the acolyte to explain the testing. "Despite the little incident right at the end, your daughter is perfectly healthy." The acolyte started out, returning the pink swaddled child to her parents. She'd placed a little wrist band on the newborn's tiny wrist, one matching Athena's and Carlos'. It identified them as a family. "The apgar test is rated on a ten point system, five areas with up to two points in it each. The first checking point is heart rate; she scored a one for that for the first round of the testing, because her heart hadn't gotten back up to about 100 beats per minute. Don't worry; for her second test, the one we do five minutes after, she was perfectly well above. The next one is breathing, where we check the effort of her breaths and whether or not she had a good cry." The acolyte grinned, "She's actually one of the louder babies I've heard here, so she got a two on that one. Third area is grimace; basically just their reflexes. With stimulation, she pulled away, so again, two. Fourth area is the muscle tone, very similar to when you went to the doctor as a child and he had you sit on the edge of the table and hit your knee to see if it'd involuntarily swing? She's very active, so that was absolutely no issue. And as you can see, her hands and feet are pink, there's not an inch of blue or translucent on her. Her apgar results equal a nine, which is really brilliant." After pointing out all of the things they had tested for, the acolyte carefully offered the newborn to Carlos, continuing, "We also extracted a small amount of blood to send to our lab and check for any issues; that'll be ready in about twenty minutes. Usually we let mothers stay for a few hours in the room so that they have a little time to regain some energy and we're here if there's any questions about breastfeeding or diaper changing or anything, but...well, you have a few options. You can either stay in Mungo's until the epidural wears off and you can walk yourself out, or you can stay until the baby's blood test is finished and go home, and then if you don't get feeling back in your legs by 48 hours after, you can return." Figuring that they would need a minute to think about that, the acolyte also pulled out the birth certificate and finished, "I'll need both of your names printed and signed on this, and I'll write her name in and give you a copy. Do you know what you're going to name her?" Athena had paid attention to the acolyte up until the point where Carlos was given their baby for the very first time. At that moment her attention went solely to him, looking from the perfect, pink face with just the tiniest tuff of blonde hair to the face of the newborn's daddy. Athena wondered what color eyes she would have; if she would have honey brown like her father, or grey like her mother, or something in between. She wondered if her daughter was going to be a crier, and if she was going to be able to breastfeed properly. She wondered if this child would have the ability to cook, or paint, or photograph, or dance or...or if she'd do something completely different, like be a lawyer. To Carlos, she murmured, "I don't want to stay." She'd rather deal with her hopefully temporary paralysis at home. She did pay attention to the acolyte when she produced a birth certificate though, and Athena looked at Carlos for a long moment before turning back to the paper and answering, "Miranda Jade Cisinerros." She would have Athena's mother's name in her honor, but she would carry Carlos' last name. She was, after all, his. The name they had gone back and forth with, but they hadn't talked about last names...Athena just wanted Carlos to be a part of all of it...besides, Miranda Jade Stryker didn't sound as pretty. |

Carlos nodded at the Healer when he said that they could after they ran the tests on their daughter before he turned his attention right back to the small baby currently lying on top of a table being cleaned and tested. He was still in awe that she was finally here; that he and Athena were finally parents. So many months of preparation, of anxiousness, of three in the morning cravings, and wondering whether or not they would be ready to be responsible for the life of another human being and now here she was, whether they were ready or not. Except they were; somehow, someway, between three hours ago and right now that became true. As the Healer spoke to Athena again and told her she wasn't done, Carlos turned back to her. Before this pregnancy, Carlos didn't even know that there was such a thing as afterbirth. It made logical sense that everything else that was in there had to come out too, but in his defense, he had never actually thought about it too deeply. And with good reason, it was quite odd and a smidge disgusting if you thought about it too much. After Athena delivered the placenta, words that he never thought he'd have to use, the bed was cleaned up, and the Healer left, Carlos nodding at him at the congratulations, but he couldn't bring himself to say thank you. He might have delivered their daughter safely but he still wasn't fond of the guy. He could go his whole life without setting his eyes on that man again and he intended to do just that. Then the acolyte was explaining the tests, and while Carlos may have been listening to her as she spoke, his eyes were fixed on the baby in her arms, their baby. Her eyes were still closed, and she wasn't crying anymore, and he was still in such awe as he looked at her. One of the loudest babies the acolyte had ever seen, excelling at almost every part of the test- a 9 out of 10. "Not surprising," he spoke out quietly, with a small smile on his lips. As the acolyte offered their baby for him to hold, Carlos let go of Athena's hand and extended out his arms, taking their little girl gingerly, cradling and holding her like he was supposed to. He looked down at her, his smile widening as he looked down at his daughter-blonde hair already present. She was the most...amazing, and beautiful person he had ever seen, wrinkled and pink and tiny and everything. He had been paying minimal attention to the acolyte as he held his daughter in his arms, but as she spoke about choosing when to leave he had to look up at that, eyes immediately going to Athena. He knew that she wouldn't want to spend any extra time in the hospital, and if the acolyte was telling them they could leave, then he didn't see a reason why they couldn't go home. Athena shared his reasoning, and when she said that she didn't want to say, Carlos nodded. "We can leave afterwards, then." As for the name, well, he and Athena had been talking about it a few times. He brought his gaze back up from their daughter, as he seemed to be unable to keep his eyes away from her, and looked at Athena who in turn had been looking at him. They had narrowed down the list of names to only a couple, but in the end Carlos had told Athena that she should decide. It was no surprise to him that Athena named their daughter after her mother; Carlos knew how much she meant to Athena and nodded in agreement. What was a bit surprising was her choice of last name. They hadn't actually talked about it, but Carlos assumed that it'd be hyphenated. His smile widened and was directed at Athena for a few seconds before he looked back down at their daughter, at Miranda. "Hola, Miranda," he greeted his daughter for the first time, his wide smile still in place before he leaned down and offered her to Athena. "Athena, meet our daughter." |

Athena couldn't help but smile at being told their child had almost a perfect score; it went a long way in making her feel better about the entire delivery. There was definitely a bit of pride underneath the the sick feeling of inadequacy knowing that she had done it. She had gone through an entire pregnancy with the morning sickness, the cramps, the braxton hicks, the cravings, the uncomfortable feeling of the very first ultrasound, the glamouring, the disgusting parts of labour...now she just had to get her legs back and this would be the most perfect moment ever. She found herself getting a little choked up as she watched their tiny, perfect little girl be placed into Carlos' arms. It was a huge contrast; he had very defined, golden arms and she was just so fragile-looking. Without even thinking about it, her eyes moved between the two of them, watching the way Carlos beamed at their daughter. Her heart hurt, just the littlest bit, from the rush of love she felt in that absolute moment. Again and again Athena had felt like she had made the right decision telling Carlos. She'd known it the second she saw him with Xandra that everything would be okay, but the fact of the moment was, she could have passed it off. She could have said she couldn't remember whose it was. Or...rather she could have before she delivered; this baby had things that she could already call traits of Carlos. Either way, looking at him hold their child in his arms strengthened her decision once again. She would never, ever regret it. Glad that Carlos agreed on leaving right away, Athena paid no more attention to that and relaxed. Sure, it caused a little bit more effort for him but...she would do her best to be planted somewhere and not need to move for as long as necessary. Even the name caused her no anxiety; Carlos had told her to decide, and she knew he would understand her decision. He knew more about Athena's mother than anyone in the world did, so he could grasp how important it was to Athena to do this, in her memory. The coincidence, the 'history repeating' just begged for the name. It was equally important to her that their baby had his last name; she never knew her father, and that had definitely affected her life. Besides, having that smile turn on her for a moment made her own rise to her face once again, softening when he offered Miranda to her. Surprisingly the name seemed harsh for such a soft, sweet child, so Athena modified it as she took her daughter into her arms for the first time. "Mandy." She said softly, brushing a curious finger down her daughter's hand. Having been comfortable in her daddy's arms, the newborn shifted at the movement, little lashes quivering like they were going to open and show them her eyes. For a moment, Athena held her breath and waited. Just having her baby in her arms was making her emotional, blinking back happy tears as she adjusted the miniature child into one crook of her arm and reached for Carlos' hand again. After a long wait, Mandy's eyes slowly opened, showing them her foggy, darker-blue shaded irises. "She's so perfect." Athena said, turning her beam up to Carlos as she said, "We make gorgeous babies, love." |

Mandy. Yes, the nickname suited their newborn daughter more than the full name at that moment, and he nodded his approval with a smile still on his face. After he gave Mandy to Athena, he sat down on the bed making sure not to disturb his two girls. This scene -all of them, sitting together after one of the most stressful events in their lives- was more perfect than he could ever imagine. They were all a family now, and what a great family they already were. Athena was easily his best friend, sometimes lover, more recently roommate, and she was now the mother of his child; they were parents. And whereas some people would doubt Athena's capabilities as a mother, Carlos didn't. Seeing her here, holding Mandy with so much love radiating from every look she gave, Carlos knew that she was going to be a great mother. Carlos took Athena's hand again once it was free, rubbing his thumb against it in small circles as they both looked down at their daughter, not needing to say anything; they were both simply admiring Mandy for she was by far the most precious work of art they had ever created. As Mandy's eyes slowly fluttered open, he smiled as he saw their blue eyed baby looking up at them. He chuckled softly, nodding in agreement, as Athena exclaimed how perfect their daughter was. It was true, she was the most perfect baby he had ever seen. Turning to look at Athena when he felt her gaze on him, he grinned. "Nothing short of amazing could have been made from the combination of our genes, cariño," he expressed, total pride in his voice as he spoke of their daughter. As his gaze once again went to Mandy, he wondered if he would ever get over the awe of just seeing her finally there, with them. Their precious baby girl was a part of their lives now, and the thought made him more happy than nervous, though the nervousness was still there. It was just hidden, almost buried, by the fact that he was eager to continue living his life with both Mandy and Athena as a big part of it. "She's going to be a heartbreaker, this one," he commented with a small smile. |

Athena would have shifted over when Carlos sat down next to them, but she still couldn't move. Luckily for her that had taken a total sideline to the fact that she was holding her daughter, finally. After fourty weeks, she was finally holding the most precious thing she had ever had in her life, and sharing it with Carlos. She couldn't think of a better person to let into her life...just how far... Well that was another thought for another time. She squeezed Carlos' hand in agreement to his statement that the mesh of their genes were perfection. He'd basically reworded what she said, but she definitely liked the way he worded it better. Besides, she always adored when he called her , and added to the tone of his voice? She really could only have felt better about the situation if she had been able to get up and walk herself out. When they both returned to looking down at Mandy, Athena leaned over to rest against Carlos, shaking her head in wonder. It really was incredible that such simple actions could create this wonderful child in her arms. Athena had to laugh at the suggestion she was going to be a heartbreaker though, teasing, "Just like her daddy." Well, sort of teasing. |
