The Lake

The lake has been home to many memories, from happy dates to near-deaths, battles and proposals.

---

After being cooped up inside for so long, Annie decided that she didn't really want to spend any more time in there. Even though it was getting chilly, England wasn't raining at the moment and that made her happy.

She'd borrowed a book from the library and had wandered her way out to one of the rocks on the lake. Still, it was boring out there without any people and she was debating on whether or not she should go find someone to play with.

"I mean look at the beautiful water! Okay, how could you possible resist it? Especially when we put it into a bottle shaped pool!" They were just walking around, talking about a potential party but when Miguel saw the lake and decided to bring up the subject of the pool again. Miguel was a very persistent person- he wanted a wet floor at the club. He couldn't even remember the last time he had wanted something this badly.

Actually he did, when he was nineteen years old. He had really wanted that Italian Vogue model. And a pool was a much safer bet, anyways. Not only did it have a lesser chance of killing him, it would also last longer than his relationship with the model ever did.

Spotting a familiar face, however, he grinned and called out, "Oi, Annie!" as he and Mateo approached. Reaching her, he immediately went for a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

"By thinking about the financial costs and the risks, that's how," he answered, shaking his head as he actually laughed. Mateo hated appearing like the bad guy in situations given that he wasn't bad at all! It was all a clever concoction formulated by his evil twin brother. In all actuality, he was two steps away from agreeing to the whole damn thing just to get Miguel to shut up.

"I don't know how many times I have to say it until you realize that I- I'm talking to myself aren't I?" he interrupted himself with a question as he felt a lack of attention emitting from his brother and then looked ahead as he heard him address the reason for the distraction.

Nevertheless, the distraction was welcomed as he followed his brother side by side until they reached Anastasia. Mateo hugged her and kissed her opposite cheek after Miguel had pulled away as he spoke, "Bellisima, como siempre. How are you?"

Annie decided that she was...what was the word for it? She wished for something and it just appeared. Of course, if life was always like that she would be a spoiled brat indeed. In this case, she figured it was just something special about the place they were in. Lots of wonderful things had happened there, for reasons she wasn't thinking about. She loved the company that popped up for her, obviously.

"I was just thinking about you two." Annie beamed, popping up into standing in a way she wouldn't have been able to back...wherever she had been before this. Returning the hugs and kisses lavishly.

At Mateo's compliment, Annie smoothed down her shirt and gave him another kiss. "You're too sweet. I? I am wonderful. It's so happy here! Everyone's happy. This makes me happy. How are you two? I know your club is doing fantastic, how are your personal lives?"

"What a coincidence! I was thinking about me too!" he teased with a small grin and a laugh. Well, halfway tease, halfway in complete seriousness.

Miguel had noticed that everyone here was in much higher spirits than in the real world. Well, unless this was the real and world and they actually lived in a dream world. That would have been confusing and at the same time a bit too good to be true. Which meant it wasn't. Oh well- they still had...wherever this was, for...however long. One simply had to enjoy it.

"I'm thinking your happiness might be contagious- I'll start giggling any moment." Except for he didn't giggle. He chuckled, he laughed, he could even admit to snorting and guffawing. Giggling? Not so much.

"Moi? I am amazing, of course. Things are starting to get a bit dull though, so it's about time for me to do something to upset the natural balance of things. Might grow a mustache, what do you think?" he passed his hand over his mouth and chin, as he pretended to stroke unseen hair.

"Not much of a coincidence, however, since he does that often," Mateo clarified with a grin of his own. He and his brother were ego ridden people, there was no denying it. And because of that they did their best to keep each other in check only most times, it would fail because they both would purposefully forget.

"I'm glad to hear you're wonderful!" he expressed sincerely before he continued. "It is pretty lively in here isn't it? Don't know, there's just something about sharing a place with so many people and well, the fact that its during my favorite holiday doesn't hurt." He liked costumes and dressing up and masks and the whole shindig.

It was like she read his mind; he was just about to respond with something work related; this was mildly upsetting only not really because who would dare to be upset in such a company? "Personal life is rather uneventful actually," he admitted. "Of course I don't plan on growing a mustache," he looked pointedly at Miguel with amusement before turning back to Annie. "But I do have to find something to do during free time."

"Surprise, surprise!" Annie laughed with Miguel, shaking her head at his usual teasing ego-filled commentary after a wink at Mateo's following agreement. It was something that just made him, him. If he hadn't made some joke about how hot he was, or great, or whatever, she would know something was wrong.

"You are too cute." Annie told him, marking her place in her book and putting it away in her bag. "And happiness is contagious. More people need to be susceptible to it; life would be so much better."

Her eyes lit up slightly when she heard that Halloween was a favourite holiday; although it was not her number one favourite, it was definitely up there. "I love the concept of costumes and masks too." Obviously; she'd met them through a masquerade ball.

When they told her what was going on with their life, a wonderful idea struck her. Ignoring the mustache comment for just one moment, Annie grabbed Mateo's hand and excitedly suggested, "I bet I could find you someone to play with during free time!"

Annie was a romance writer; she loved the idea of matchmaking...

But then there was the comment about facial hair. Rubbing her fingers against Miguel's smooth skin, she pointed out, "No girl likes to kiss sandpaper, and believe me; that's what facial hair feels like. I would say no one but I don't know the guy perspective."

"Cute, adorable: all adjectives better used to describe you than me," he told Annie after a wide grin. Then, he went on to explain, "I would prefer manly and handsome, charming and suave. You know, James Bond things." James Bond had been his idol growing up- fighting the bad guys and getting the hot girls.

"Very true and then alcohol would be consumed for the sole purpose of celebration rather than mourning and drowning in sorrow...although we do get a fairly sizable amount of our profits from sorrow drowners." It was just an inner thought, spoken out loud.

Having his mustache ignored, even if momentarily, caused him to pout. He guessed it might not be the greatest idea. "Really? Sandpaper? This hair- come on, feel it. Pass your fingers through it, feel how soft it is. There's no way I would have sandpaper growing on my face." Actually the thought of anything growing on his face wasn't so compelling...mustache idea was probably going to get crossed out.

Mateo had a newfound urge to sing Halloween songs and watch Halloween movies and maybe even find a ghost to talk to or something- he hadn't spent nearly enough time celebrating this wonderful time. Needless to say, he didn't agree with people thinking that this was the Devil's holiday and all that jazz. They were witches and wizards anyways- religion was an odd subject to delve into.

At Annie's suggestion, however, his mind left thoughts of Halloween as she brought up what was essentially match-making. He laughed first, "Like a blind date?" He laughed again. "Oh, love, I have too many bad experiences with it for my taste." Just simply too many. Then again most of them were made by family members either playing jokes.

Not that he thought Annie would that, but still. He wasn't very comfortable with blind dates and match-making, even from a writer of romance novels.

"I will concede to that." Annie said, taking a moment to avoid being modest. She didn't mind being cute or adorable. It was just who she was. Of course, she was also fully aware that men preferred more 'power' words in their descriptions.

That was why she didn't use them.

Hearing that a 'fairy sizable amount of their profits' was from people who drank because they were sad actually saddened her, furrowing her eyebrows in result. Why did people turn to things that were only going to make them feel worse? That wasn't anyway to go; it was better to find something that'll make a difference, and get happy again.

"Sandpaper." Annie echoed gravely, brushing her fingers fondly through her hair anyways. "Very soft, sugar. But facial hair is a lot coarser than head hair. Don't ask me why, I'm not a biologist."

Hair was so not as interesting as the idea of love though, and she shook her head. "No, not a blind date. I don't do blind dates. I'm so, so much more subtle than that. Please? Please please pleaaaase? At the very least you'll have a night or two where you aren't being a workaholic. You work too hard. Miguel, tell him he's too pretty to not have a social life." Since they were 'twins', she figured he wouldn't have any trouble complimenting, basically, himself.

Sandpaper was not very toe-curling a word or a concept. Sandpaper growing on his face was even less so- so he guessed the growing mustache idea was entirely thrown out the window. Out the window and into the lake where it would drown- wait no. Water was supposed to be good, not evil, at least until Mateo agreed to give him his wet floor at the club.

Grinning when Annie called his brother a workaholic, he laughed afterwards when she asked for his help. "Mateo, she's got a point. You're completely cramping our style, man! We're the fun loving, outgoing, sexy Spanish club-owning twins! And you're newly found love for work is not cool."

Now he was being cornered about having a social life? When in his life did he become boring? This was not him. He was the one who got his other older brothers out of their office/kitchen/study to get them to come party and now he had to be coerced to and pleaded into agreeing to let this amazing friend set him up with someone. This called for drastic and desperate measures- complying.

"Fine, fine, yes, you convinced me. And really, it's not fair. After you started your tirade of pretty pleases, it was basically over." Not that she actually said 'pretty please' but she might as well have been.

"And how do you know I'm a workaholic anyways?"

Annie beamed when Miguel teamed up with her, nodding towards the 'fun-loving, outgoing, sexy Spanish club-owning twins' parts, though it was extra long. It worked though, a fact that made her squeal and give him a tight hug.

"Pretty please." She smiled, unashamed as she shrugged. "I may have inquired after my favourite..." Taking a deep breath, she spoke quickly, " Fun-loving, outgoing, sexy Spanish club-owning twins, a time or two."

Annie was just a mother hen, and here in this place she just seemed to know things.

"So. Because now I'm curious. Both of you need to tell me what you look for in a man or woman." She settled herself back down on her rock, and clasped her hands expectedly.

"No shame in that, in fact we should feel shameful for not keeping in better contact," he admitted with a small grin and a nod. Mateo was usually the one that kept in touch with friends, because Miguel would always forget. Now that they were both forgetting to call friends and hang out with them...man they sucked. Maybe he should stop spending his free time hooking up...ha. No.

"Great, an opportunity to showcase how shallow I really am," he answered first while he thought about it. "They have to have a sense of humor- if they can't laugh that's a dealbreaker. The more active and adventurous the better, like if I were to say, we should go bungee jumping right now, she or he would go along with it. Tall, but not taller than me. Brunettes- I prefer brunettes. Women, curvy, like" he outlined the figured with his hands before continuing, "Men, lean but muscled and toned."

Let's see, he didn't think he was forgetting anything else.

"That's it, can't think of anything else."

"With a cherry on top, maybe?" Cherries and sprinkles and whip cream too- he liked putting the works- and he never did anything half assed so. "How about next time you inquire about us yourself to our faces, mmh?" He liked to be distracted from work despite what everybody else seemed to think.

After Annie inquired after their preferences, he let Miguel go first, to allow him time to think it through. "This is why we've never fought over anyone before," he noted with a small grin and a chuckle. "Conversationalist, that's my deal breaker. If I can't hold conversation with them, about anything and everything, then I won't bother. Confidence is key too, to a point. Someone who knows their self worth, but doesn't see the need to flaunt it every chance they get. And then there's the smile," he admitted with a chuckle. "If they have a great smile, I'll remember them forever. I agree with Miguel on the," he copied the gesture Miguel had done to explain his like of curvy women, "But not for the men. I prefer mine a lot more...buff. And I don't have a preference on the hair color, but I am a sucker for a nice butt." See, he could be shallow too.

"What about you, love, what's your "dream man"?"

"You should feel shameful." Annie scolded firmly, deciding that she could pout about it. "For all you knew, I went back home and you would have never seen me again. I published a book and went back to New York and visited Russia and it's really lucky for you two that I came back. I actually bought a house. Two houses. Well, a cottage and a castle. And I had my baby! She's beautiful. You'd probably think I was crazy if I told you that I just spent four months in 1884, right? Well I did. Magic sucks."

Still, when Mateo requested that she come see them instead of asking someone else about it, Annie shifted in her seat and got off her soap box, admitting, "I didn't want to bother you."

Starting businesses were crazy busy and making a name for oneself was even harder. She had all faith in them, obviously, but she could appreciate them needing the concentration on that.

Talking about their preferences made her smile, mentally taking notes. They were highly interesting creatures; she figured she may need to write them at some point or another.

"Curvy women, hmm?" Annie sighed, "Some of us have no luck."

It was intriguing to see the differences between them though, especially when they mentioned personalities. "Well. Then I will keep an eye out for, " Her hands copied them with a grin, and then she added, "Humorous, subtly confident, conservationist women with great butts and possible brunette hair. As for men-"

Well, maybe she knew a lot more men then women in England. Hm. "If you had a preference between one or the other, which would it be? And don't say both. Let's not be greedy, boys."

Asked about her own dream man threw her for a loop for a moment, causing her to tease, "What, not even giving me the chance with a woman?"

They had her pinned though; as much as she respected the concept, Annie didn't find herself much attracted to other woman. Obviously she'd try anything once, but in general, it was men that caught her eye.

"My dream man." Her breath whooshed out of her, fiddling with the zipper of her jacket as she looked out over the water. "He would be comfortable with himself - and with me, and my lifestyle and decisions. He'd let me be independent, but...still be the man of the house, if that makes any sense? I like someone I feel safe with, and protected. Someone who'll claim me and remind me that I'm his, but'll let me be who I am and talk to other men. He'll have to respect Jason, since he is the father of my child. He must have a base kindness, and know that...what he's getting into won't last."

She was silent for a few minutes, before waving her hands and giving a short laugh. "Uhm, on that depressing note, physically I just want someone taller than me and healthy. As a plus that eyebrow thing?" Her hand went low on her tummy, wryly shaking her head, "That does stuff to me."

And to lighten further, she teased, "I like nice butts too."

"All of this has happened!? Already? Where did the time go? Mateo? Have you seen the time? It flew away!" He looked up at the skies, pretending to try and find the time flying away before he stopped joking around and turned to smile at Annie. "Congratulations on your home and on your baby girl! What's her name?" If he had missed a whole pregnancy..yeah, that was bad. And he dared to call himself a friend. As well...magical trips back in time sounded complicated. Why was anything surprising him anymore, he wasn't sure.

"Mostly genes, I guess. We're Spanish honey, our norm is curvy," he explained with a laugh. And in all reality, he would not have it any other way.

"I prefer blond men, I'm not going to lie," Miguel was a lot more physical, it seemed, when it came to men. It was probably because he hadn't actually had a relationship with a man before, just simple dates and hook ups.

At the small, yet nonetheless teasing, mention of Annie with another woman Miguel sighed, "Sure, let my imagination run wild this early in the day."

As he listened to Annie talk about her dream guy he smiled, letting her explain, not being able to suppress a frown when she said it was temporary. "All the eyebrow thing does is remind me of Alejandro so no, thank you." He laughed, more than eager to jump into any comment that would liven up the situation.

"Can you find it in your big, beautiful, heart to forgive us for neglecting you?" Damn, he didn't think he had been at work that much to have missed so many things. Miguel might have been joking when he said he was trying to look for where the time went, but it was true. It flew by way too quickly; especially since it seemed like only yesterday when Annie had come in with Sam and asked about renting the place for a Valentine's Day Masquerade Party. Given his love of masks and of Valentine's Day- that was an offer Mateo had actually agreed to before Miguel. And now Annie had a baby, and a castle, and was time travelling. Dear Merlin.

"Well next time don't worry about it- we like being bothered," he assured with a smile. "And you can trust me with that because otherwise I would let you know not to." Honestly, it seemed like the majority of the time he got more visits at the club than at his apartment- they practically lived there and not because they were working all the time but because they enjoyed it.

"And the great smile, don't forget about that," he reminded as she listed back the adjectives to him. "Dark haired males- tall, dark, and handsome. That's my preference." Couldn't find many of them recently though- a shame.

"That makes perfect sense," he answered at the end of Annie's description rather than immediately after her question. That's really all that everyone wanted really- find someone who...fit, right next to you. Somehow, who despite everything and everyone, worked.

"Well if we had drinks right now I would propose a toast- to either the person of our dreams or cute butts- haven't decided which."

"Apparently into an evil spinning watch posed as a Christmas present I gave." Annie quipped, shaking her head at their combined joking, her smile turning into one much softer, much prouder. "Kassandra Arielle. She was born fifteen weeks early, but she's safe and healthy, if not a big small. She's the most beautiful child I've ever seen in my life."

Mateo's request for forgiveness made her reach over to hug them once more. "Of course I do. We've all been busy; it's understandable. I'll visit more."

Understandable, but not fun. Either way, she couldn't actually hold it against them; she hadn't tried to see them as much as she should have either. It was just that so much had gone on in the past year, and she didn't even know what to do with it all.

"Blonde men and Brunette men, great smile, got it." Annie was already rifling through her brain on men she had met who weren't taken and would totally go for equally gorgeous, blonde Spanish men. Lean blonde men, buff brunettes. Mmm. This was going to be a fun project.

"It's good for you. More...happy hormones." Annie teased, "But that was what university was for."

Experimentation and all that jazz.

"No worries, I'm not interested in your brother." She laughed, clarifying, "It's a Faye thing." A Faye thing that started over a century ago, damn them.

"Always better to do both, sugar. Always better. Good things come in threes." She gestured at the three of them, and then decided that she was going to get started on the match-making right away; taking them both by hand, she brought them back into the headquarters so she would know where they were when she found who she wanted.
