[Note: This RP takes place on the same day as the Damocles/Abira/Rowland rp]

Rats were a pain. Fictional rats were even more so. People who assigned chores for him that included taking care of said fictional rats were cruel and sadistic. The act of carrying around rat traps and placing them all over the manor was not an easy one. Catching his fingers on the traps was not pleasant, not even after the fourth time it happened. His fingers hurt and throbbed, because of the fictional rats. He really hoped a fictional cat would find them all and swallow them whole.

That was only one of his chores done, but Rowland decided that he deserved a small break. Damocles was obviously occupied elsewhere, and his clothes and room would be cleaned as soon as possible...before the ball, at least. And if something came up, he would blame his injury. It wasn't like Rowland was purposefully trying to be difficult, it just appeared that way. Rowland was responsible and dedicated and other words people were surprised that he associated with himself.

Because of the ball, the kitchen was even more of a mess and hullabaloo than it normally was. Rowland ducked someone going out with a tray, jumped over a bucket of water, and grabbed a bread roll before the head chef could see before heading into the supply space of sorts; mostly everyone else saw but they didn't care- everyone knew him, almost everyone liked him...almost. He considered himself fairly likable, it came with being humble and modest, he supposed.

There was a separate room, still connected to the kitchen, no door to make an obvious distinction but the distinction remained. People were working their butts off over there, and Rowland was going to sit down on the table that Lord Faye had 'disposed' of and that Rowland and a couple of other servants moved in here. It was their little break room of sorts and almost no one of any kind of importance waltzed into the kitchens, let alone the supply side where all the brooms, mops, and other cleaning products were held. The chef didn't mind- it kept them out of his lovely kitchen and out of his lovely way.

Still nursing his hand with the roll in his other hand, Rowland walked into the area to discover someone already there. Grinning, he greeted, "Oi, Des!" He went over and sat down on the table, "You should be working," he joked before taking a bite out of the bread. Rowland was no one to talk- if Desmond was here it meant that he was done with his chores...or having a lazy day.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Or as Desmond puts it, 'an apple a day keeps him from performing his duties of literally being a dog to the Faye family'.

Desmond lounged on the table in the kitchen where other dogs-ahem-servants leave their world of demands and ridicule to have at least minutes of normalcy. That or they wish to hide in the only place where the family wouldn't dare to step in. So what if Desmond had other business to attend, like cutting the hedges and polish every statue in the manor? He was sure that nobody will notice the left behind duster near an almost spotless statue near the Foyer or that one little leaf that stood out of the newly cut hedge. Although it will be quite a scene if somehow they discover his little 'mistakes'.

But alas, someone is bound to walk up to him, yell in his face, and make him return to his joyful duties. Might as well enjoy his little apple break while it last. Desmond had his legs propted on the table with a green apple in his hand while back on his chair. Ah if his mother could see him now, eating an apple when he should be completing his never ending chores and such. But that's the fun part, she wasn't anywhere near here but her screeching could ring not only just the whole manor but throughout England.

Lovely women she was.

The noise of the door caught his attention. He turned his head; his apple already made contact with his mouth, and saw Rowland waltzing in the room with a loaf of bread. He nodded his head in greeting as he took a bite of the apple as he watches him sit down the table with him. Swallowing the piece of the apple he smiled at his comment about him working, "Hullo to you too, mate." He dropped his legs and asked him in a joking manner, "I should be prancing through a field of flowers." He looks side to side as if he was searching something valuable. "Nope. No prancing, no work." he said as he took another bite of his apple.

His eyes caught sight of Rowland's red and what looked like in pain hands and sighed, "Rowland, Rowland." he began in a fake disappointed tone, much like his mothers, "What have you gotten yourself this time?"

Rowland laughed in amusement, shaking his head from side to side as Desmond chose to reply in his usual way- sarcastically. Rowland sometimes wondered how it was that Desmond got into less trouble than he did. Rowland had a smart mouth, he knew that, whereas Desmond was smart-mouthed. There was a clear difference- it made Rowland seem much more innocent when compared to Desmond. Though, no one knew it. Desmond acted differently when he was in front of the family, a brilliant actor if he ever met one. It was no secret from every worker in the manor that Desmond was...discontent to say the least. Rowland called him a whiner, that earned him a whack across the head once.

But despite his never ending bad mood when it pertained to the most noble of house of Faye, Desmond remained Rowland's best friend. He got Rowland out of a spot of trouble once, Rowland's first day on the job actually. He always seemed to be getting him out of trouble. Desmond and Desmond alone, apart from Lady Abira, knew about his magic. Rowland entrusted him with the secret, and Rowland kept all of his. That was the 'deep' aspect of their friendship.

In normal day-to-day reality, however, they were just a couple of servants who enjoyed jokingly insulting each other, and talking about new information learned- basic gossiping was one of the few luxuries they had and he partook in it greatly, as well as shameless teasing. Today, apparently, he had a feeling they were going to indulge in complaining about the ever-present amount of chores there were to do. They only took part in these moments of self pity sparingly- mostly because they never had the time. Rowland had accepted that as servants they were going to be treated as the dirt beneath their feet most of the time; Desmond was still awfully sore about that.

"I have done nothing except what was asked of me," he responded, after swallowing the mouthful of bread he had in his mouth, tearing off an unbitten piece of it and offering it up to his friend. "I had to lay out traps for the 'rats'," he explained, using air quotes around the word rats. Desmond was aware of his frequent lie, he knew there were no rats. "And I unfortunately caught my hand in them once...or twice or...four times, what difference does it make?" He finished quickly with a grin, shrugging his shoulders.

"You make it sound like I get in trouble often, Des," he joked, noticing that the thought seemed to be common today. "Maybe if you would stop complaining about how much your life is a hell and help me, I would get in less trouble," he added with a single laugh as he shook his head.

Desmond thanked him as he accepted the piece of bread from Rowland. He popped it into his mouth as he listen to Rowland and the 'litter buggers' that 'supposedly' are roaming around the manor. For as a long as he'd known Rowland, he never cease to amuse Desmond on how he got away from certain situation. Like a few weeks ago where Rowland almost got in trouble (since when is he never) for setting some curtains on fire and he came up with a ridicules story that the curtains somehow got ripped from the wall and flown straight into a fire place that was in the other side of the manor.

But a rodent infestation appearing in the most cleanest and high society manor? Classic Row-Row.

" I still can't believe you used rats as an excuse." he said with a smile. "Why not spiders? Women are more prone to fear insects since they occur more than rats." He wasn't making fun of him, he was telling the truth. But you can count on ol' Rowland to come up with something on the spot. Something that Desmond can't do but that's why they have each other to make balance scale, well, balanced. "Does the fact that you’re wasting your time setting up traps for the evil 'rats' makes a difference to you?" he asked, taking a bite of the apple.

The look on Desmond's face, when Rowland commented about getting into trouble, was a well used look that he would give Rowland like in a well decorative box. "I'm not sure whenever to say something witty like I always do or pretend to say that you don't get into trouble or that you 'don't' get into them often." Oh, did he just say something witty like he always does?

Nah.

"Now If I can recall, mate." he began while ignoring the comment about him and his complains because he knows he does and there's no use to argue about it, "You have told me about your adventure with Lady Abira and the 'rat' and how Lord Damocles gave you a quest to exterminate the vile rats. You did not ask me to help and I didn't say anything because I thought that you didn't want someone to be by your side when you find the rats." he concluded with his most innocent smile. "And besides, isn't just the two of us trouble enough already?" he added nonchalantly. He has notices the rate of trouble he got into increased slightly when Rowland but of course it doesn't bother him.

None at all.

Desmond was right about one thing, the rats as an excuse was a poor choice, but it was his go-to excuse whenever he needed it. He was sure if half of the times he said there were rats roaming around the manor were actually true, the entire household would be rotting in disease and infestations. Something, he guessed, Desmond would only be happy about. It wasn't that Desmond disliked every single individual belonging to the Faye family, but collectively he wasn't their greatest admirer, to say the least. He mainly disliked the chores, and the way they were treated. It was people like Leigh Faye that gave Desmond the want to curse their name when they weren't in hearing distance. The man was a bloody idiot, and if even Rowland thought so, then it was a certain he was clearly not a good person.

"Because I can hardly see Lady Abira throwing a ruckus over a spider, could you?" He asked, laughing once at the image. Right, he wasn't even sure if Abira would even throw a ruckus over a rat, but at least if she didn't, she had decided to play along. Of course she did, she was smart and intelligent. "But you're right about one thing, a spider would have been much less trouble," he added with a nod of his head before he took another bite of the bread. There were no traps for spiders, and they far less easily recognizable therefore less likely to get him in trouble because no one would notice their absence. Spiders and insects were overlooked, and in the words of his best friend, 'just like them'. Rowland had the feeling that sometimes all that Desmond needed was a giant hug, or a giant kick to the arse, whichever.

"It doesn't, because guess what you're going to help me do?" he asked with a grin on his face, in relation to the fact that he was putting up traps for fictional vermin. Sure, it would probably take a bit more convincing on Rowland's part to get Desmond to help him make sure his work wasn't useless, but he figured the two of them could find a way to make the situation a tad bit more enjoyable.

Rowland rolled his eyes and hit Desmond on the shoulder lightly, "Har, har, very funny. I "don't" get into trouble, just like you "don't" like the Fayes," he joked, using air quotations around the emphasized words. "Especially when you and Dami get along so well! Dami and Dessie, together forever," he laughed, not being able to contain himself. It was just too rich- the nicknames were too priceless to not bring them up at every opportunity he had. Of course, Damocles would hang him by his toes in the dungeon if he ever found out but before that happened he would have to stop loving the sound of his own voice and keep quiet long enough to hear.

Rowland mocked Desmond as he went along with his thoughtful and logical explanation, shaking his head when Desmond was done. "Yes, yes we are. Which is why, I need your help, of course," he added, referring back to the previous request. Desmond wasn't going to enjoy it, neither was Rowland looking forward to it but it had to be done. After he cleaned Damocles' room, he supposed. He wondered if he should chance a cleaning spell, but knowing his own luck and skill...he probably shouldn't. He didn't want to dye everything in the room a shade of pink, or make the curtains dance once more.

Desmond had to agree with Rowland about Lady Abira and her actions. Sure he doesn't serve her all the time for there were other servants taking care of her and her needs but from what he hears about Lady Abira from the servants, he definitely does not see Lady
Abira acting out over a spider. Desmond also had to agree with Rowland about how spiders are less complicated than any kind of fictional rats. "This is why I'm the voice of reason my friend." he said nonchalantly. "But from the looks of it, you don't listen to me often. I'm hurt, damaged even." he sighed dramatically but his face betrayed him and broke out into a grin and laughed heartily.

He took a bite of his apple,"I have absolutely have no idea what I'm getting myself into with you. Please do tell me because the suspense is killing me." he said, pretending to be clueless about their future adventure with the rats. Not that he wasn't looking forward to be Rowland's 'trusty steed'. He had played that roll quite often now that he thinks of it.

He put a mock hurt face when Rowland lightly punched him. "Now you know more than anyone that there is one particular Faye that I don't exactly look up to." he commented with a little frown on his face. Rowland knows who he was talking about for he might have let slip a couple of times, Rowland would say almost all the time, about the head honcho of the Faye’s. But other than that he has no problems with the other family members. Well almost but really no problems. He looked at his ever in trouble friend with the same face that he always gives. He raised his eyebrows and said, "My my, I wonder what would 'Dami' would say when he hears that his manservant is feeling unloved? he said as he put the emphasis on manservant with air quotes. "Tut tut tut. Jealously is not a pretty emotion Row-Row." He grinned sly as he took another bite.

Just the regular teasing that they often share nothing really special. Although this particular teasing is very much used a lot for the past weeks or so.

"When do you not need my help?" he asked jokingly. Of course he wasn't going to hind from his work forever and he might as well suffer through it with his friend. Time feels quicker whenever they perform their duties together and Desmond complains less, shockingly. Besides, he not that terrible as to leave Rowland alone to lay traps. Oh the fun that they are going to have."Alright mate, your wish is granted. I may not have experience with these kinds of rodents but if we're extremely careful, we might survive." he said reassuringly while smiling.
