Kel noticed the slight surprise, and she glanced back at it sheepishly, moving to pull out her pen as she mumbled, "It calms me." This was true. Doing her work, loving her work, becoming immersed in her work had always calmed her. Even thinking about it, going over what she had done in situations that really had nothing to do with her work did a good job at keeping her calm and in control. If she hadn't been attached to the IV, she probably would have asked to get up and go see Louis. Not that he would be receptive to seeing her, of course, but she didn't voice her wish. It wouldn't do good to get frustrated over all the things that she couldn't do at the moment. "Whichever you want. If you need to like, get out of the room or whatnot." Kel told him, even though he said he wasn't going to leave; even though she had asked him not to. She knew if their roles had been switched she probably would have been wanting something to do as well. His answer made her look away again, at that blank sheet of paper. "You don't think they're going to make it." He had, not an hour ago, told her that the babies were strong and could get through this. Now his nervousness, his 'attempt' to be hopeful...it send a whole other message, one that she wasn't so sure she knew how to feel about. |

Declan nodded. "I get what you mean,' he said. "Having something else to focus on is calming." Later on he'd probably get something to do. For the moment he really didn't feel like making the trip down to his office. He didn't even know what he could work on anyways, other than the stuff he was doing that related to his Dark Mark, and he didn't want to focus on that while his girlfriend was in labor with his children. This was supposed to be happy and positive, and he was going to do his best to make it that way. "I don't need to go anywhere," he said, shaking his head. "I want to be here." Kel's next statement had him immediately shaking his head. "No, it's not like that," he said. "I'm just... I know how difficult it is, the chances...Just because I'm nervous doesn't mean I think they're not going to make it." |

For a few minutes, Kelly just looked at her paper. Did she really want to be focusing on that? Focusing on writing an account of what happened, of the failure of the mission when she was already feeling so stressed about labour, and having to heighten her babies' chances of surviving? No. Not really. So she sighed and tucked it all back in, scooting until she was laying down on her side instead, facing Declan. Again she reached out to take his hand, wanting whatever contact she could have with him. As much as possible would have been better, but given how they were positioned, holding his hand was the best she could have at the moment. Her only response to him saying he wanted to be there was to nod, though it meant a lot. Left to her own devices, Kel would have no choice but to think. There would be nothing to focus on otherwise, and she'd be left with only thoughts of the IV, and of the fact that the lives in her stomach were going to be going through a lot of stress - that she, was going to be going through a lot of pain. She didn't want to be thinking about that. The chances... It was a vulnerable moment for her, trying to think of what would happen if the babies didn't survive. It'd have been seven and a half months of nothing, hours of stress and pain for nothing. Automatically she tried to relax a little, knowing that the more she got stressed, the more stress it would be putting on them, and anything she could do to help, she would be doing. She proved that, right? With the drugs? The needle was currently pulling on her skin a little at her shift, but she was ignoring it. Slowly, though she wasn't exactly sure if it was the right kind of comment to make in that situation, she said, "If they don't make it, we can always try again. Maybe when we're more prepared to be parents." She realized that maybe the seven months weren't such a waste. There was once a time when she didn't want children at all. Where she may be not so sure about parenthood itself, it didn't mean that she never wanted to at least try. That's what she had been doing for so long; she was trying. |

A moment later, Kel was putting her papers down, turning to face him and take his hand. He wrapped both of his around hers, content to just sit there with her. He hoped he was helping enough, but he really wasn't sure he was. After all, all he was doing was sitting there, really. Maybe the physical touch was comforting, he had no idea. He just hoped it was. He was really trying to stay calm for the sake of Kel and his children, but it wasn't really working. He thought he might at least be managing to appear calm. Maybe. He really didn't want to think about what would happen if the babies didn't make it, but to Kel's comment he just nodded. "Yeah. We can." He knew it wasn't planned, and he knew they probably could have been more ready, but he wanted these babies. Their babies. Yes, if they didn't make it, he would have to move on. It was just a fact of life. But thinking about having more children after that wasn't even really computing because the idea was just too...surreal, almost. He was holding on so tightly to the idea that these babies were going to make it, that anything else just seemed like some sort of dream-world that could never happen... ...even though they were dangerously close to it being real. |

Kelly could tell that, although Declan agreed they could try again later - something that Kelly was really just throwing out there, because the idea of having more kids after this just made her feel even more anxious than she already was - he was holding on more to the idea of these babies. He was scared for these babies, and wanted these babies. Not other ones. Unsure of what she could say to comfort him when she herself was starting to go back into that panicky stage as another contraction began to wash over her, Kelly just fell silent on the subject. Many hours later, her contractions were getting worse, and ask they did so, so did her voicing. After one particularly long contraction, she wasn't feeling very good. "Declan," she said through laboured breaths, "Why did you have to sleep with me? Why couldn't you leave well enough alone? Oh!" She leaned forward and closed her eyes as another wave of pain came over her. Panting, she leaned back, staring at the ceiling, "Why?" It was a near whine and she could hear it, so she stopped talking once again. The contractions were fast and hard, barely giving her anytime to catch her breath before she was fighting through another one. "Ooooh," Kel moaned as another pang hit her. Breathe, breath. Merlindamnit, ow. "I want it done!" she said. "Where is the healer? Can't they do magic and get it out? Get them out?" |

Declan stifled a laugh as Kel demanded to know why he'd slept with her. "I'm sorry." He figured that was all that was really safe to say. He didn't want to upset her, and he knew that labor was--obviously--extremely difficult. This was probably one of those situations where the less talking he did, the better off he was. He just kept his hand in hers, offering support. "No, I'm afraid they can't do magic to get the babies out," he said, a hint of amusement showing through in his voice. "But you're doing great," he said. "Almost there..." |

Marit had been in periodically to check on Kel for the past hours. She knew that she must be getting close to time for the delivery based on how long it had been taking. When she came in, she asked, "How are you doing, Kel?" She figured she had a good idea. Actually, she was pretty sure the whole floor had a good idea at that point. Kel wasn't quiet. At all. She was contemplating putting Silencing Charms around the room. Checking on how far dilated she was, she said, "Good news. You're nine centimeters. One more, and we can start the delivery." The heart rate of the babies was still going strong, just a little bit faster, though because of the stress of the labor, but that was normal. |

Kelly was just in general trying to remember to breathe and not move too much because moving hurt but as she came down from yet another one of these horrendous shocks of pain that really shouldn't have to be necessary for labour when she heard Declan apologizing. Immediately her gasping turned into a sharp intake, her voice already risen in octaves, "What?!" She stared at him, "Why? Why would you say that? Why would you say that right now?" It was not just the pain that made her squeeze his hand a little harder, all but glaring all of a sudden, "Of course. That's really nice. Tell the woman stuck in a bloody bed trying to have your children that you're sorry you slept with her! Thank you!" She didn't exactly stop there, bending over her stomach again with a near scream. It was longer than the rest, and she'd worked herself up enough to go there. "Great?-" Luckily or unluckily her healer came back in, asking her how she was doing, and Kel just finished her comment towards Marit, "Oh, fine." Indignant. Seriously, how is anyone supposed to be doing well in this kind of situation?, "As good as I can be with two babies trying to get out of my body!" She laid back down willingly enough so she could be told how far dilated she was, and it was a lot of control that she had to exert for her not to just burst into tears right then and there. Only one more, and then the delivery. Only one more? Did she have any idea of much each of those 'one' mores hurt? Emotional? Absolutely. But she was forced to give birth, and it was absolutely no picnic. They would be too. "God," Kel moaned, letting her head fall back against the pillow. The contractions were longer and she was not feeling well at all. "Argh!" It was less of a word and more of an exclamation as another contraction came. "Declan." She very nearly growled, suddenly angry at all of this, her vision distorting in her pain. Oh. Maybe those were tears? She didn't know. "I hate you. I hate you for doing this to me!" Damn panting. What was she, a dog? She had a feeling someone would say 'no worries, they all say that' but Kel just closed her eyes and pressed her free hand to her burning face. |

Declan really wasn't sure what to say in this case. He was pretty sure that no matter what he said or did, it was going to be wrong. "I'm not...sorry I slept with you," he tried to explain. Was trying to explain a good idea? Probably not, but it was all he could think to do. "I'm just sorry for...er...being responsible for putting you through this pain?" Was that good? He figured there was probably going to be something else after that because she seemed to be in a lot of pain. Maybe he should just stop talking. |

Marit stayed quiet while Kel was yelling, although she did at one point cast a nonverbal Silencing Charm around the room. It'd be best not to scare other patients, she figured. Declan was doing his best to apologize to Kel, and Marit honestly had to stifle a laugh. He should have known better than to try to reason with a woman in labor. His best bet probably would have been to shut up and nod. It didn't take too long before Kel had fully dilated. "All right, Kel, you're going to need to start pushing now. On the next contraction, I want you to push and bear down for ten seconds." |

Kel was quiet for a few more minutes only because she literally had no air to use her vocal chords. Talking and breathing and dealing with the contractions all at the same time... it annoyed her that as much of a multi-tasker she was, she wasn't exactly able to work through these things. There was too much mentally going on. He was talking though; that was good, she could focus on that for the moment. However, then she was being told that the next thing was to push. As much as she had automatically wanted to get to the end, this? This was the scariest part and she wasn't sure... nope. "What?!" Kel asked, "But I'm not ready! Declan, tell her I'm not ready!" It was only a breath, and then she was continuing, "I can--oooh," she moaned as she bent forward through another contraction. When it was over, she seemed to have changed her mind. "I was wrong," she gasped, "Get it out, get it out." She was gripping the edge of her bed and Declan's hand so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Kel barely had time to think as the contractions came now even more painfully and longer than before, her body telling her that she needed to push. "Declan," She cried, "I don't hate you, I just--ahhh!" She lied. She was never having another child again, ever, she decided, ever. Bloody hell. Just...why did people want to go through this? Why would they put themselves through this? Still, she was pushing. She was doing what she was supposed to, somehow. |

Declan wasn't able to tell the Healer that Kel wasn't ready, first because she was ready and secondly because he didn't get the opportunity. The next contraction was happening, and then she was pushing. "I know you don't hate me," he said, gripping her hand. "You can do this, Kel. You've got this. They're going to be out soon." It was easy to focus on the immediate goings on in the room, which was completely focused on getting the babies out. The "soon," however, was what he was worried about. Soon the babies would be born into the world, and then the main concern would be keeping them there. For now, he was trying to stay in the moment. "You're doing great." |

Damn that girl was loud. Marit wasn't sure she'd ever dealt with a mother in labor that was this loud. She was just glad that she had put Silencing Charms on the room. A few pushes later, she said, "Ok Kel, you're doing great. I can see the head; the first baby's crowning." Everything was going smoothly so far, and she just hoped it would continue that way. "Another push or two should have the head out." |

Kel didn't say anything in response to Declan's comments, unable to open her mouth to do more than breathe and scream. It hurt. It hurt, really bad. Her ribs were still sore from where she had hit the truck, the pressure on her hips and the place that had previously given her so much pleasure all but unbearable. Already she felt exhausted, dizzy, and hot. So, so hot. It was remnant to that damn virus when she was burning up, but this time there was nothing sexual about it. It just sapped her energy and left her gasping for air against that heat. Her grip on Declan was lightening somewhat, though she didn't necessarily mean to. Hearing Marit's words did nothing to calm her down, the horrible image of a head sticking out making her shudder, silent tears rolling down her face as she continued to just simply push, and breathe, push, and breathe. "Hurts." She whispered, closing her eyes. Who was she kidding? Even getting this far, knowing that once they were out they could not survive, or she could be bringing two children home with her to have to care for? She wasn't sure which was more terrifying at the moment, but it was terrifying. She could feel her heart racing in her chest, the tears more for her panick and less for the pain. Her thoughts were dispersed as another contraction pulled her back under and she was lowered to pushing once again. And again. And, again. |

Declan waited with baited breath (and a bruising hand) as the labor continued. He did not envy Kel one bit. Yes, the babies were small because they were so premature, but there were two of them, and it was labor, and he couldn't even imagine how much pain she wa in. All he could do, unfortunately, was keep up with the words of encouragement. At least she wasn't yelling at him anymore. But she was definitely still yelling. He wondered if (and hoped that) Marit had put Silencing Charms on the room. He figured she had because she wasn't saying a thing about the noise. "Ok, the head is out," Marit announced. Declan had thought about going to look, to actually see his babies being born, but he wound up deciding against it. He figured he would stay up there with Kel and then cut the cord when they were finally born. A few more pushes got the triumphant announcement of, "It's a boy!" His heart was pounding as he waited for the baby's cry. It had hardly processed yet that he had a son. But as soon as a loud wail filled the room and he saw their red-faced baby boy drawing in his first breaths, it hit him like a ton of bricks. They had a son. His son was born. He let go of Kel's hand so that he could cut the cord, and he wasn't surprised when they instantly took him to the other side of the room to get cleaned up, get the Apgar test and take him to the NICU. "He's crying," Declan said, overjoyed. "His lungs are working." Not that everyone in the room couldn't tell that, but he was just so excited that he had to repeat it. He looked down at Kel. "You did it. You're amazing. We....we have a son. And he's crying and going to be healthy and..." He trailed off, unable to even find words, really, to express how he was feeling. "Yes. Your son is going to be just fine, and you can see him as soon as the delivery is over. But for now? Your daughter's on the way," Marit announced. "Just a few more pushes, Kel..." |

Kelly actually felt nauseous as she heard that the head was out. What did that even look like? A head was sticking out from her. It was... actually, she decided that she wasn't going to think too much on it. She wasn't able to actually see anyways, so she didn't have to worry about it. Although the babies were very much premature, the shoulders were still agonizing to push out, cries swallowed deep into her throat as she tried several times to just exert enough force to do so. It didn't happen as quickly as she thought it might - because everyone says the head's the hardest part, right? - but it did happen and she felt the release of pressure as what she presumed was the baby slid out of her passage. Her eyes squeezed even tighter shut as she heard that they had a boy, and then there was a crying baby in the room. Her first reaction was to flinch, her hand freed from Declan's as he went to go cut the cord. Both of her hands went to her face, wiping away tears, and perspiration. Her lungs felt extremely sore, hoarse, and she ceased making noise at all. Kel didn't open her eyes again until Declan came back over to her, listening to his joy that their son was okay. Considering how relieved he was looking, how happy he was? That was why she was doing this. He wanted the babies, and that was why she was facing such a terror over raising them. Because he wanted them. And seeing how happy it was making him? It had to be worth it, right? Then she had to push again. Kel didn't close her eyes, though she was exhausted. She didn't take her gaze off of Declan, and she didn't open her mouth to any noise. Instead, she just let her eyes glaze over, telling herself that it was almost over. Just a few more pushes, Marit had said. Just a few more, and she would be done. It took a bit more than a few pushes before they were seeing the head though, as Kel's energy sufficiently depleted. The only sign that she was struggling was Kel's white-fingered grip on the sides of her bed, her air supply uncertain and shaky as she attempted to push out one more baby. It didn't hurt so much with the second one once the head was out, Kel vaguely noted. Maybe because it was a girl, maybe because it was just wearing against already wounded areas. She didn't know. But soon she had managed to push out her second baby with a sigh, another announcement of the baby being a girl echoing. Echoing, because there was no cry. The seconds seemed to draw on forever, and ever, swirling in distorted noises as acolytes rushed over to help clean out the airways and push air into the tiny, fragile child's lungs. Kel just closed her eyes, rolling onto her side as the silence stretched. She didn't want too see that either. Longer and longer the delusion of death swept through the room, until finally one frail, watery cry whispered through it. One tiny little cry was all it took, and then the baby gave a louder, more strong scream in the room. Both of their lungs were working; the baby girl had just managed to get a little bit of water in her own just barely formed set. She too, after her own cord was cut, was then rushed away to get cleaned up, given an Apgar, and brought to the NICU for temperature stabilization. Kel passed the placentas easily enough, and then she was finally left alone, body throbbing but curled up as it was. Children. She had two of them. She had two babies that were now hers to name and care for. She felt horrible, dizzy, hot, aching, and she just wanted to close her eyes and sleep. Perhaps be able to ignore, for the time being, what just went on. She was just thankful it was over. |

Declan practically stopped breathing as soon as their daughter was born...and she was silent. She wasn't crying, and he felt like his heart was about to stop. Had it been too much to hope for to get two healthy babies despite the risks? He watched the little girl anxiously, every ounce of him willing her to start breathing. Entirely tense, he wasn't sure if he could watch what was happening. Kel apparently couldn't; she was looking away. Despite the awfulness of what was happening, Declan couldn't bring himself to. He couldn't bring himself to do anything but watch, anxiously, all knowledge of Healing that he had seemingly forgotten as he looked on helplessly. Finally there was a loud cry in the room, and he started breathing again. Their daughter was alive too, her lungs working, at the very least for the moment. He wished so badly that they could get to hold them, but he knew that they would be rushed straight off to the NICU. He looked on after them until he couldn't see them out of the room with the Acolytes. Once Kel had passed the placentas and was cleaned up herself, he went over to her. "Congratulations," he said, pulling up a chair by her bed and sitting down. "You did it." She was closing her eyes, but he wasn't quite sure if she was asleep. "We can probably go see the babies in a few hours. Did you want to get some rest first?" It was amazing how much more relaxed he felt now that he knew that the babies were in the NICU, had cried when they were born, and were probably stable and doing just fine. No, they weren't out of the woods yet, but they were off to as good of a start as he could hope for. |

There was some kind of...relief when Kelly realized - thanks to the wail in the room - that she'd managed to have both of the babies without killing them. She'd managed to carry them for almost eight months without doing something so horribly damaging to them, and they'd survived delivery. That was good, it did a lot to lessen her guilt on the matter. She knew they had taken away her babies when, once she was all taken care of the staff left too, it was silent in the room. Only Declan was left, and she heard him pulling a chair up to her bed. Congratulations. Congratulations, he said, and she just dragged in more air. Yes, she did do it, didn't she? There was no failure there, and that at least made her happy. In the mess of the day, at least she'd been able to manage that. Yes, now she was exhausted. Yes, she hurt, but it was over. And honestly, it was probably easier to do this now as long as the babies were okay, right? They were smaller so they were easier to push through. Now though, she felt...empty. "Why can't we go see them now?" Kel finally asked, opening her eyes to look at him. The emptiness felt like a vulnerability, something that she shouldn't be feeling and the urge to see her children was overwhelming in response to it. She hadn't seen them; she'd just heard them. Just two little cries, that was all she got for the hours of pain and pushing. They'd taken them away, and now she felt like she was missing something vitally important. |

"We can probably go see them in a few minutes," Declan said. "They're just going to get them settled and make sure they're stabilized," he explained. "Then I think it should be fine." He really wanted to go see them, and he knew Kel would want to as well. "Let me get you a wheelchair so we can go down the hall." There was absolutely no way he was letting her walk after just having given birth to twins, and he doubted she would want to. But...with Kel? He could see her perhaps wanting to try. He wished they could just have the babies in the room with them, but they would have to be seen strictly in the NICU until they were deemed healthy enough. He just hoped that wouldn't be too long from then. "And then after we see them, do you want to get in touch with your family or anything?" He knew he had to call his mom and brothers when he got the chance, but first he wanted to see the babies. |

Kelly nodded when Declan explained that they needed to be settled and stabilized before they could see their children, but the 'few minutes' was much better than a 'few hours'. Sure, she was tired, but that didn't mean she wanted to go to sleep. If she went to sleep then, she would be messing up her sleep cycle and she had a meeting the next morning. Even through everything that she'd done in the past few hours, she'd remembered that. A few minutes was good anyways, because she wanted to get out of the gown. It made her feel weak, and reminded her too much of that month of hell. Slowly, she sat up, brushing hair out of her face as she gauged how that felt, and then swung her legs over the side of the bed nearest to her things. No need to move anymore than she needed to. "I don't want a wheelchair." She told him, glancing back over her shoulder before she carefully stood. She knew better; she was being slow, letting her body readjust. Her legs felt a little shaky, but they weren't broken, she could use them. It was the soreness that was the worst part, and she bit her lip as she made her way over to her stuff. Yeah...she could see why people wanted the wheelchairs. It wasn't like her to just sit back and not do things herself. Getting dressed was a very slow process, but she was blessing the fact that she'd worn a simple business dress that day. That meant no balancing on one leg and the other for pants, no trying to zip something tight when she was so sore...she just pulled on her underclothes and slipped it over her head, leaving the tights and heels where they were. It was amazing how much better one could feel in their own clothes. Leaning against the wall - though subtly to avoid him mentioning it - Kel redid her bun since so much hair was falling out of it, and paused. She should be telling people the news, but... "Not until I know they're okay." She decided, subdued as she glanced towards the door. |
