Jason's flat

Jason Lambert

This is where Jason lives. It's tiny and furnished all right with mostly secondhand items. It has a cozy feel to it, though, and looks very lived-in, although clean and neat. It isn't much, but he does take pride in what he has.

Annie had felt no better after she'd woken up, taken a long shower, and ate real food. Writing didn't make her feel better, though she took hours describing what happened in her diary. Drawing to keep a visual of the happenings didn't make her feel better. It didn't get it off her chest. Not even her music made her feel better, and honestly, all Annie wanted to do was go see each and every one of the people that she had guided throughout that torturing terror of a walk of enlightenment, and make sure they were all okay.

Fear of being attacked again just caused that want to simmer. Still, being in her apartment wasn't doing much for her. She was feeling really tense, anxious, and that damn hallucination had just kept coming back to her. It just made her more determined to live her life, of course.

At one point, Annie had taken out her list of things she wanted to do before she died, touching the told, frayed corners and worn parchment, weathered by tears and crumpling, crowded with things to be done with only a small amount crossed off. Logically, there was no way that she would be able to get through it all. Logically, there were things on it she knew she wouldn't be able to do, period.

But the problem was, Annie wasn't exactly a logical thinker.

So she'd tucked it into her jeans and went out to grocery shop, ending up at Jason's flat. After knocking, she called out, "I come bearing comfort food and cheesy romance movies!"

Jason was just reading when he heard Annie at his door. Immediately, he put the book down and went to go get it--it was one he'd read three times anyways. He was just re-reading because he loved the way it ended and because he'd just finished the one book left in his flat that he hadn't read (which was quite an accomplishment, considering how stuffed the place was with books).

Opening the door, he greeted her with a smile. "Well, that never sounds like a bad thing. Come on in." He stepped aside to allow her entrance.

"You just rescued me from a boring night alone with a book I've already read." He hesitated just a little before asking, "How are you?" There was a quiet concern to his tone that really left little else to be said right at that moment.

He'd heard through the papers about what had happened, although he couldn't even imagine being there or going through what Annie went through. He didn't even know the half of it, and he figured he'd give her the opportunity to talk about it if she wanted (because honestly, he was her friend, and he just wanted to help), but if she didn't want to, then he wouldn't push it.

Annie sighed in relief when the door opened and a smiling Jason was standing there in front of her, telling her to come in. She did just that, bags wavering in her hands as she immediately threw her arms around him. Hugs. Seriously. They were the reason she lived.

Maybe, she was being a little overdramatic.

"Well it's good to be of some kind of real help." She muttered, glancing up back up at him when he spoke again. "Alive. Which..." She gave a little dry laugh, and just plopped down on his couch, leaving her things at her feet. "-you know, I wasn't for a little while. I hate England."

She really, really did. Since coming there? She'd nearly been raped, she had been beaten, stabbed, shocked back into life after several cardiac arrests, in a coma, electrocuted and shocked back to life again, lead people through some kind of deathly enlightenment, and had her skull bashed in while being in the thrall of some dark magic. Great, wasn't it?

She shook her head. "Honestly, Jason? I just...feel so guilty. It sounded so...it sounded really interesting. Dante's Inferno kind of journey, with me being Vergil. But it wasn't interesting. It was horrible. It was...I don't understand how people can do these kind of things to other people, and I was enabling it. People were cut, tortured...god, a girl was sacrificed and there was nothing I could do about it, but I had lead them there. I, did that to them. Clearly, she was still emotionally screwed up with it, and she stopped talking for a moment to frown at her hands before she had a less shaky, solid control over her voice.

"But anyways, I really didn't come here to rant. I'm sorry. I just need to get away from it all. Is it okay that I'm here?"

As soon as Annie hugged him, Jason wrapped his arms around her, returning her embrace, just holding her for a moment. There was really nothing better than a good hug, and it seemed that Annie could really use one right about then.

"You weren't...alive...for a little while?" he asked, shocked.

Of course, she was continuing to talk, so he stopped to let her get her story out. She felt so, so guilty for something that was clearly not her fault at all.

"Annie, none of this was your fault," he assured her. "You did not do that to them." She was as much a victim as anyone else in the situation.

But she was saying that she didn't want to talk about it, and he wanted to go with whatever she wanted, so he let the matter drop for the moment. "Of course it's ok you're here," he told her. "If you just want to get away from it for a bit, then consider this your escape. Besides, I believe you said something about cheesy romance movies, and I can't exactly pass up that opportunity." He grinned while he said it, but really: they were his favorite genre.

"I broke the rules." Annie told him, "Myself and the other guide - Brad's friend Hunter. We needed to stop this willow tree that was attacking people and it's not equal to be an animagus but I did that anyways to like, freeze it because there's this...knob..."

If it was any clearer that Annie hadn't gone to Hogwarts, it would have been then. She just shook her head, and gingerly touched where her collarbone was. "They didn't exactly want us dead though. They gave them those portable defibrillators."

So once again, she was burnt. But, her heart had started beating again.

He told her that it wasn't her fault, but wasn't it her standing there telling them that they needed to go on the journey? Accept it and go through the gates? It really was her fault. Still, she was cheered up slightly by him telling her she could be there. She'd half-expected to be told to leave, half-wanted to be judged. This was Jason though. She'd gone there for a reason besides their mutual love of good movies. It was kind of funny how many people in England she'd come to really just adore.

"Good. Because I brought a lot of them and don't expect me to leave until you're absolutely sick of watching them." She reached down and pulled out a variety of her favourites, including Ghost, the Notebook, A Walk To Remember, Casablanca, Dirty Dancing, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Gone with the Wind, and... oh.

"I might have just brought all of the ones I brought to England with me." She mused. If she thought about it, she hadn't actually chosen any. She'd just...yup. She just grabbed the whole lot. "You pick first."

Jason nodded knowingly. "Yeah, the Whomping Willow," he said. "I'm... so sorry." He couldn't even think of anything else to say. It was just so...incredibly horrible, the kinds of cruel things that people could do. Electrocuting someone and shocking them back to life... just for the sake of a bloody game, some sick show of propaganda by You-Know-Who.

Jason was distracted by the seriousness of the situation by watching Annie pull out basically an entire DVD collection, some of which he already had. As he looked on, amused, he commented, "Well, then you might not be leaving for a while because I pretty much never get sick of most of these movies."

He was asked to pick first, and he surveyed the collection for a moment before doing so. "How about Gone with the Wind?" he suggested. He hadn't seen it in a while, and it was one of his all-time favorites because...how could it not be?

Annie just shrugged as Jason apologized to her. She understood why he said it of course. The difference was, he had no reason to say it. She did. She'd been repeating it so many times, hoping that somehow it'd make some kind of difference.

Whatever. She wasn't there to dwell on it. She was there to have a movie night marathon with her friend.

"Well I was hoping on that." She responded, smiling slightly as she looked up at him. "Which is why I brought food. You know, strength to keep watching. And bribery to let me stay if necessary, of course."

When he chose Gone with the Wind, she fished it out of the pile and neatly put the rest of them back away, before popping up and handing it to him. "I knew I liked you for a reason." She said trying to slide back into her usual, happy personality. Just being there talking about movies was making her feel a little more human, and she was really pleased at that. It just wasn't like her to feel so down.

Jason grinned. "Well, you know what they say: the way to a man's heart is through his stomach," he said. He honestly believed that statement because he was very food-motivated. He loved it. And when someone else was bringing the food (like now)? It was even better.

"No bribery necessary though. Strength is another story."

Annie handed him Gone with the Wind, and he went over to put it in while she hopped up onto the couch. Once he got it all set, he joined her, sitting down next to her.

"Well, nice to know my taste in movies keeps you around," he laughed. "But really: who doesn't love this movie? It's a classic for a reason."

"This is good to know. What are other ways to get into a man's heart?" Annie asked, deciding the more lighthearted conversation was a much better topic to stick to. "Speaking of your stomach - or rather, your palate - I hope I brought things you like."

Obviously there was the typical things - ice cream, chocolate, cheezits, pretzels, popcorn, soda (to make floats), peanut butter (what? she liked dipping things) - but she also brought carryout just in case he hadn't eaten dinner. Okay, so maybe she went overboard all over the place. It hadn't been until she'd seen Jason that she'd really gotten out of the 'everyone must absolutely hate me and I completely deserve it' mindset with him too, and she wasn't kidding about the bribery idea. It had been a legit thought as she'd rushed from her house.

"Among other things." She added, smiling at his laugh. "I don't know; people who don't have good taste?"

"Hm...other ways to get into a man's heart?" He looked at all the food she was spreading out, eyes widening upon seeing the huge spread.

"Honestly, with a selection like that, you won't need any other ways," he said, only half-joking. Helping himself to some cheezits and chocolate as the opening credits rolled. "But really? Good taste in movies helps too."

She mentioned being concerned with bringing things he liked, and he just laughed. "Trust me; I pretty much like everything." There was very little that he wouldn't eat, and even then it was probably just because he wasn't even sure if it was edible. But that was about it.

Grabbing a blanket off the back of the couch, he offered it to her. Jason was definitely a creature of comfort, and there were a few throw blankets in the living room along with a bunch of decorative pillows. His apartment was mainly done in neutral shades, so it wasn't like it added much to the room by means of decoration, but it definitely helped in terms of comfort.

Annie watched Jason's eyes widen when she'd finished pulling out the food she'd grabbed, and she looked at it, really just then seeing how much. "I went overboard." She admitted, sighing slightly. "It just all looked good. And high-calorie."

She stole a piece of chocolate from him and took the peanut butter out, snuggling into a pillow she'd snagged as she'd sat down the second time. She'd really only asked about the way to a man's heart to hear what he thought about it all, but she simply smiled at his comment about the good movie taste.

"I'm just glad you openly like these kinds of movies." She commented, "It's sad most guys won't admit they like them unless it's only them and you."

Annie took the blanket he offered and wrapped it around herself as the movie started. She just took a bite of her peanut-butter dipped chocolate and hushed her voice a little. "Can I ask you a completely, totally, random, no-point question?"

"Tasty and high-calorie: works for me."

When Annie remarked on most guys not admitting they liked those types of movies, Jason just shrugged. "I don't get why: they're good. I mean, what's not to like?" Some guys did get weird about stuff like that, but Jason never really saw why. It was just a movie genre: some things appealed to some people, and others didn't.

The movie was only a couple of minutes in when Annie spoke up. "Sure, go ahead." Now he was curious about the question.

Annie shrugged with a slight grin when he said he said he agreed, basically, that tasty, high-calorie things were good. At least that night. She wasn't so sure if it was because he knew what happened and was being passively supportive, or if that was his general mindset as well a fair amount of the time.

Honestly, it was a really lucky thing that she would have walked into that bookstore when he was working there. Somehow in the past six months she's really come to trust and enjoy spending time with him. The fact that they had the same movie taste and he was comfortable enough with himself to admit he liked the romance genre - made her love him even more.

So she was okay talking to him about what had been in her mind as result of the Enlightenment journey.

"So... okay." She would start by explaining how she got to that thought process first, she decided. "I knew, when I found out about my illness? That I didn't want that to happen to anyone else. In terms of like...especially the people I loved. I made that decision a long, long time ago. And yes, my levels are really low - nearly undetectable - but I still have it. I'm not getting my blood checked everyday, I don't know if the medicines they give me will eventually stop working and I won't notice for a little while, and I don't want to risk that." She shrugged, "So I'm a virgin. But knowing that like...I'm probably going to die prematurely? An 'I don't know' amount of time? Finding that out at seventeen in a little overwhelming, and as a writer I guess I tend to be a little more overdramatic. I made a bucket list, of sorts of things I really wanted."

Simple enough, right? Annie hesitated before continuing though, her fingers twisting the blanket he'd given her around in her lap.

"I'm a romantic. I had planned on getting married, having kids. At least one. While on that...that trip, there was one challenge where we kind of... I don't know if we were seeing our futures or our fears. I watched myself die. In a hospital bed, by myself. Looking like I'd been in that bed for a while and then just, slipped away. I don't want to go out like that. I want to be able to go out fighting, knowing that I lived my life to it's utmost fullest. I want to experience everything."

She sighed.

"I also realize that's not logical or able to happen. I won't have sex, because I don't want to put anyone else in the situation I am. But that means I won't ever get a chance to be a mom. I don't know. I just know that like...we seem to have the same kind of reservations for things, and I guess I just wanted to know if you'd ever thought about having kids."

When Annie directed the tone of the conversation to a more serious one, Jason shifted in his seat, turning away from the movie he'd seen at least ten times and focusing on his friend. He had the feeling that this was going to be a conversation that he needed to pay attention to, and he wasn't wrong.

He waited first, letting her get through what she needed to say, and it honestly wasn't that surprising. He knew that she was extremely cautious with her HIV status, and he figured the 'bucket list' type thing would be common, but bringing up children had seemed kind of random... of course, not really once taking into account the hallucination she'd had. That would get him thinking too.

It really did remind him of his own situation, in a way, and he could see why she'd brought it up to him. It was something he could relate to her with. "I've thought about having kids," he admitted. He never really talked about that sort of thing with anyone. "But I do have my own fears. I mean, I know you talk about risks with your HIV status, and I...well, I wouldn't want to put a child in danger,' he said. It was nice having a friend he could talk to about being a werewolf since the only other people he'd told besides his family were the people whom he was required to tell, and none of them had ever had particularly wonderful reactions.

"I don't know. I mean, I know I always take my Wolfsbane, and I know that someone else could always watch the baby during a full moon, but... I would worry about genetics," he confessed. "I mean, I know you have to be bitten to be a werewolf, but how would that affect having children? Because...well...your DNA has to be altered in order to get that monthly change...and even between changes. Like, I have a way stronger sense of smell than normal humans, better hearing...and even more physical strength." It was something he put more thought into than he let on.

"So yeah, I think about it, but I'd be nervous. I mean, are there werewolves that have children?" He'd honestly never met another, so he wouldn't know.

"But yeah. I think about it too. And...it's something I'd want. But I guess I always figured I'd meet...someone...I suppose." Well, clearly that wasn't happening. "I guess I always thought I'd do it the traditional way, but that's... I don't really see anyone in my immediate future."

Annie didn't seem too thrilled with the idea that she'd never get to be a mom because she'd never had sex and didn't want to. "Well, you shouldn't do something you don't want to do," he acknowledged. "But in this day and age, that's not the only way to have a baby. I mean, there's adoption, there's artificial insemination, there's using a surrogate if you're too uncomfortable with the idea of carrying a baby...Just some things to think about."

He shrugged. "But I guess my answer, in short, is yes: I do think about similar things and have similar reservations."

Annie ate a bite of her chocolate and peanut butter and focused in on his reaction to what she was saying. It was honestly a really relieving thing to know that he wasn't judging her for what she was saying and he understood. She had suspected that if he had ever thought about having children, that he would be worried about the same kind of thing.

"Genetics." She mumbled. Annie was nodding along with what he was saying, but at his question about werewolves having babies, she smiled. "Actually..."

Well hell, she wasn't a snooping journalist but she sure as hell had to know her interests, and since the beginning of the year it'd been on the supernaturals. Studying them - whether up close or from afar - had left her with some information that some people probably wouldn't have wanted to know. "I do know there is one woman who lives in some place called the Den who has a one and a half year old boy, and another one is pregnant. And the vampires? Seriously, they breed like rabbits. I don't even know how many; just that there are a lot."

It was really awful how horrible it sounded. Didn't everyone want to meet someone? And have that traditional...honestly, she wished, so hard, sometimes, that she was just normal and could have what everyone else just took for granted. It was so, so bloody frustrating.

"Would you be more or less worried about the genetics if the other person wasn't a werewolf?" She then asked, curiously, before he laid out her options for her. For a moment, she gave a small, wry smile, and then she spoke again.

"Adopting agencies won't accept someone with a time limit, and I'm not married, and my job is erratic at best... I'm not a good candidate. I have thought about the other options though. I would want to carry my own baby, of course. It'd have to be a c-section. I just want to experience that. But at the same time, how can I do that to them? Say I carry them full term, they're born, no problems... and then I'm gone. Who'll take care of them?"

That? That made it all not worth it. Knowing that she could ruin a child's life? Otherwise, she probably already would have had a baby.

Jason was actually really interested to learn that there were werewolf couples who had babies. It was also intriguing to think about there being a Den of sorts. He'd never really thought about werewolves grouping together, having always thought of his kind as loners, sort of ostracized from society. And in that moment, he felt pretty naive for thinking so.

"That's...really interesting," he said. "I wonder if their babies are healthy and...normal." Of course, the more surprising part to that was actually the bit about the vampires.

"Wait...vampires...have babies? Seriously? How does that even work? They're not even...alive." Ugh. For some reason the thought of vampires breeding was just so entirely unappealing. He wasn't really sure why, but he just had a natural dislike for them. They were...dead. At least werewolves were living, breathing, humans. But animated dead people? It was so weird.

"I think I'd be less worried about the genetics if the other person wasn't a werewolf," he said. "I mean, the less chances for things to go wrong, the better. But...I really don't think someone should be prevented from having a child just because of a condition with slightly more risk than normal." Saying it for Annie as they were comparing situations made him think about it more in terms of himself. The situations were very similar, and if he believed that she should be able to have a baby, why not him? Even though he was a werewolf. Even though there were some risks involved with that.

"Yeah. I'm not exactly a prime candidate for adoption either." Low-paying job, single, living in an old flat, registered dangerous magical creature...none of that screamed 'exemplary parental candidate' on paper. Or maybe even in real life. Certainly no one was going to be lining up at his door asking if he wanted to adopt their baby.

He smiled at just how much she was clearly thinking this through, very able to recognize the fact that it was something she really wanted to do. "Well, you would be giving your child an amazing life," he said. "I mean, you said it yourself: your levels are really low. I know that could change and all, but it seems like right around now would be a really good time. I don't think you should let it stop you, but I agree that you'd have to think about the child's future in case something did happen. I...hm. Maybe you could have the father in the picture...but...I don't know." He shrugged. "That might make things complicated with whomever you'd do that with. At least, it seems like it'd be a complicated situation, and obviously you don't want to be in a relationship." He paused to take a cheezit, chewing the orange cracker while he thought it over. "But it can be done."

"He looks like it. Very loved." Was that completely stalker of her? She shrugged slightly, amused more at herself than anything else. Honestly it'd just been one time, and she'd been able to see.. a lot of them at one time. And she wondered why she was in England. Getting in trouble? Or situations what could cause that? Yup. Basically her talent.

At his clear disgust at the idea of vampires having babies though, Annie laughed, dropping her chocolate to climb over and throw her arms around his neck. "Forget I said that. See? Deliciously human again. But I'd prefer not to get bitten tonight, if you don't mind. I'm wearing couture."

Really though? The logistics of how it did work made her curious. She figured it'd have something to do with the blood they drank. Maybe vampires who didn't drink animal blood could have babies because that was some kind of human DNA in them or something and as long as they up kept...

It was interesting, but the werewolf/vampire dislike was very, very strong. So she wouldn't talk about it again.

"See, that's what I was thinking too, right? That someone who could understand and at the same time doesn't have my risk..." She settled back into her seat, and nodded when he said he wasn't good for adoption either. The simple comment that she would be able to give a baby an amazing life just made her smile, but the conversation itself was a pretty serious one.

"Now would be a good time." [/b Annie acknowledged. ]Because...she was thinking about it then. She was seriously wanting it, right then. She was ready to take the plunge for something she wanted then, when maybe in a few months she'd be terrified once again of really messing something up.

"Right...the father. See, that's where the whole idea of sex comes in. Because most people are going to say something or another about if I'm comfortable about my levels to have a baby, then I can do it the 'right way' too, yeah? And since I'm not in a serious relationship with anyone? That'd be...really stretching any other relationship too. I don't think people realize that like...HIV can be recessive. It can sit there for months...years.. and the BAM! Too late. Sucks for you." Her hands had clapped together to spark her 'bam', and then she just shook her head.

"Honestly when I wrote the list that was one of the things that I figured was too far fetched... "

Jason smiled at the idea that werewolves could have completely normal children. It was something he really just didn't allow himself to think about, really, but knowing it was possible was definitely helpful.

"Don't worry; I'll refrain from biting you," he said with a laugh, wrapping his arms around her when she hugged him.

He could tell when they continued talking about babies that she really did want to do it now, but, sadly, she was right when she talked about the fact that a lot of guys wouldn't really understand the no-sex thing. "Well, those people are crazy," he told her matter-of-factly. "You can have a baby however you want. If that means no sex, that's what it means. People just have to respect that. And if someone wouldn't be able to respect that? You probably don't want them as your baby's father anyways," he said.

"I bet you'd be able to find someone, though," he tried to assure her.

"Well I know I'm irresistible." Annie responded, exponentially in a better mood than she had been when she'd first been standing at his doorstep. It really was amazing what good company, a good movie, and tons of food could do for someone.

"Crazy, but logical."
Annie knew that it was illogical to pick and choose. It was just who she was; she was going to find that one person she was planning on being with for the rest of her life, and then give herself to them. Considering that now that wouldn't be happening, she didn't want to just give it up as something pointless. That made even less sense to her. Not only that, but as a virgin, that would be a double dose of potentially harmful transfer.

Really, seriously, not going to happen.

"My baby daddy." She repeated, nodding slightly. "Okay, so maybe you can help me."

Annie paused for a moment, thinking, and then laid out, "He'd need to be pretty. Good bone structure, something compatible with my own. He'd need to have a good disposition, and have control over his temper, though I'd prefer a sweet temperament anyways. I'm not too picky on eye color or hair color or whatnot; that isn't what's important there. He'd have to be able to support himself, and if necessary, a child. Not want sex from me, or only want to do it because my family has old money and I have a small amount of fame. I'd want someone willing to be around, because it'd be so stupid to have a child and then if something happens, dump them off with someone they don't even know. So obviously this means I would have to get along with and like them."

Okay, honestly, Annie liked most everyone.

"Think I've gone past of the lines of never happening yet?"
She grinned. "I have high standards."
