Ophelia`s flat

Slowly and slowly as time went on, Patricia felt like her present would be better served someplace else entirely. Of course, she knew that Jonathan and Ophelia were simply teasing, and having a bit of fun doing only that but she herself knew how fast that could change, and how quickly teasing turned into not being nearly enough. But, seeing as how she wasn't being kicked out of the door just yet, she would remain seated exactly where she was, adding more whiskey to her coffee, and sipping it like it was the merlindamned elixir of life.

Patricia looked up at the knocking at the door and raised an eyebrow immediately, laughing in pure amusement at the same time. Oh she definitely agreed with Jonathan, Ophelia was certainly the popular woman. But she really hoped it was someone, anyone, that could maybe take away a bit of awkwardness out of the situation. Her eyebrow only rose higher as she heard Ophelia begin to reprimand what she assumed to be her son, otherwise it would have been moot for Ophelia to refer to herself as the person's mother.

"Speak of the devil and the devil will appear," she quoted out loud with a sly grin before raising her hand and greeting Faustus with a simple wiggle of her fingers. Well, he was definitely good looking. Another thing that must have ran in the family. "Nice to finally meet you, I've heard quite a lot about you."

Faustus hugged Ophelia back as she threw her arms around him. He had to admit that he was feeling a bit guilty. Through time he got used to seeing her almost every week and talking with her, but he hadn`t done that for like a month. Ophelia used to know everything about his life, every single thing he did or thought. Everything seemed different now as he had so much to hide. Living with Christina, being a father, going through pain in order to be immortal… he knew she would never approve of any of those things.

”I`m sorry, mum.” Faustus exclaimed, smiling lightly at her ‘annoyed mother’ act. She could never pull that off. Leaning down to her he kissed her cheek and then raised his eyebrow at her words. ”I really hope that that someone is a person I like.” he answered silently, but grinning. By what he guessed, it wasn`t one of his mother`s… man friends.

Although he certainly did not expect to see Jonathan sitting there. Even the Dark Lord being there would have made more sense. He hated being surprised like that and for few moments he simply watched the man and raised his eyebrow at the silly wave. It was so not the time and not the place. He noticed a woman there too. She was very attractive and he smiled at her, nodding his head. ”Then I guess that you are Patricia. Therefore… ditto.” The fact that she was Ophelia`s friend didn`t disturb him at all. He wanted to charm her. And then… maybe do more.

Reaching for a chair he placed it near the table and sat down, facing Jonathan. Eventually he looked at the man again. ”I knew you weren`t just a Ministry Worker.” he spoke simply, taking out his wand, flicking it and taking the glass that appeared. ”Maybe now you`ll tell me? Or are we supposed to pretend that this is normal?” He was aiming to talk to his mother about him, but instead met him in person. Faustus was still not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

Ophelia rolled her eyes and closed the door behind Faustus. As if she`d let him inside if she`d be having a guy over. But she wasn`t sure if he`d find Jonathan`s company very ‘likeable’. Mostly because she had no idea on how they were going to behave seeing as by what she heard it wasn`t a pleasant encounter. But However it would go, she surely wanted to see it. Of course, Jonathan was a Death Eater and everything, but in her eyes Faustus was best at everything and she wouldn`t doubt a second that he would win.

Walking after Faustus into the living room she sighed heavily upon seeing the way he was looking at Patricia. She really didn`t want to see any of that. ”She`s way too old for you, honey… and way out of your league too.” Her voice was light as if she was making a joke, but deep inside she was completely serious. Patricia was much older than he was and… he was her son. That explained everything. She was different from Patricia when it came to motherhood.

Sitting back down to her spot on the couch she glanced at Faustus and then at Jonathan. He really didn`t seem very happy. Somehow she got the feeling that that encounter did not bring happy memories to him, even if as it looked nothing bad happened. ”Now now boys… play nice.” she spoke, looking between them again. ”I really don`t think that neither I nor Patricia would fancy going to a funeral.”

Jonathan could have laughed at the reaction he had gotten from Faustus upon greeting him, except most if not all amusement was being slowly driven out of the conversation from the way the man was currently looking at his mother. All of a sudden, he guessed this resembled how his mother had been feeling not only a few moment ago when he was teasing Ophelia. Except, his mother, unlike him, didn't get annoyed or slightly aggravated, only awkward. Jonathan, however, skipped awkward, and went straight to the aforementioned emotions. Dear Merlin, his mother was like what? Forty eight? He didn't know, it was just...disturbing.

"Well, that much was pretty obvious," he started, taking a sip of his drink immediately afterwards, ignoring his mother's reprimanding stare. That was just what he needed, a lessons on manners from his professional assassin of a mother. "I suppose there really is no use hiding it from you any longer," he noted idly, speaking more to himself really, than the man sitting in front of him. Even if it still didn't bode well with him, just saying it outright like that, he guessed either Ophelia or his mother would have let him known anyways. So after taking another sip from his drink, he simply stated, "I work with your mother."

Patricia grinned as she noticed her own looks were being appreciated. Well, she knew that much herself but it didn't hurt to be reminded every now and again. "All good, I hope." she commented, grin still in place as she briefly glanced at Ophelia. Not that 'good' would have been the adjective of choice, but she figured she might as well behave in present company. She didn't want to cause a confrontation; she had enough of them on her own. Hell, her job was basically all confrontation. Nevertheless, when Ophelia assumed the role of protective mother, telling him Patricia was far too old for him, Patricia was still grinning, and even laughed out loud a bit. "Yes, technically speaking, I'm old enough to be your grandmother." Seeing as how he was born..what three years ago? Something like that. But age was really only a number.

Patricia rolled her eyes and glared at him reprovingly as Jonathan was being intentionally difficult. "Oh, for Merlin's sake. He's a Death Eater, there." She shook her head disapprovingly and took another sip of her very spiked coffee before she addressed Faustus once more, "You'll have to excuse him. Secrecy and difficulty runs in the family." As did gambling and cursing among many other things, but still.

Reaching over the table Faustus took the bottle and poured some of the Firewhisky into the glass he conjured. That was one thing he liked about going over his mom`s the most – the never ending supply of alcohol. He figured that that came from living in the Death Eater HQ for just so long. Everyone there were freaking alcoholics. On the other hand, he could completely understand that. Some people weren`t strong enough to do things they were supposed to and drinking had always been the one cure no magic could make.

He watched Jonathan, despising the man, but also being interested in him. He was the perfect example of a Death Eater – finding himself very important, treating others like they weren`t worth much… that always pushed Faustus to the very edge of just snapping. After all, they were serving a man that was horrible to them and not even so powerful anymore. Most of them are just idiots that can`t work on their own and need guidance. And Faustus always felt better than all of them. But when thinking about Death Eaters, his mom did not fall into the same category.

”A Death Eater… I will never understand you, people.” he said calmly, before taking a gulp of his drink. In all honesty he was being completely nice that moment, because it could have went ina completely different direction. However Jonathan seemed to be Ophelia`s friend and he wasn`t going to cause a scene. Not for something so insignificant. But if he were a Death eater, he figured that he`d be an idiot enough to do so and start a fight ‘just because’.

Killing those people few nights ago made Faustus feel like his father and at the same moment, like a Death Eater. He despised both and was still angry on himself for it. Yet, his mother`s and Patricia’s comments helped him to get over those thoughts. ”If I had a grandmother that looked like you, I`d be in a lot of trouble.” he joked, grinning, his expression completely different than what it was moments ago. There was something about Patricia that attracted him. Any other way he would have just dropped the subject before. ”And age had never been a problem, mother.” When she got with his father she was twenty and he was around sixty. Talk about age difference…

He was still smiling at Patricia, until her last comment. It confused him a bit. Did that mean that she knew Jonathan`s family well or… the other possibility seemed too impossible, so he raised his eyebrow. ”What do you mean by that?” he wondered lightly.

When the conversation went to Jonathan being a Death Eater, Ophelia smiled softly. ”Faustus seems to have a problem with what we do. I can`t even count how many times he was trying to make me quit. But it`s just not going to happen, dear.” she said, glancing at him. She loved what she was doing. It was her dream every since she learned about them. Being a Muggle born didn`t stop her from becoming a wife of a Pureblood wizard, even if her happiness wasn`t long lived. But blood didn`t stop her and he son couldn`t stop her too.

Sadly the whole conversation seemed to be fixed at the fact that Faustus was just so bluntly attracted to Patricia. It seemed weird (and of course wrong) to her. Patricia wasn`t the kind of woman that he would usually date, she knew. He preferred tall, slim, young blond girls. It just made no sense to her and also slightly annoyed her. He seemed to completely ignore his mother. ”I would be glad if you`d just shut up.” she sighed. And then frown. Great. Now was he going to remind about her past each time?

Jonathan shrugged at the comment, not particularly interested in explaining himself or the Death Eaters to the man. It was just a simple fact; no need to over indulge or anything of the sort. He had already tried to explain the situation to his mother a decade ago, but to really no avail. Eventually, they ended up agreeing to disagree for eternity. Some people were just too stubborn. they didn't want to listen to anything, or anybody for any reason. Jonathan was like that as well, and he really detested having to repeat himself, so he just let it be as is.

"Yes, well, him and a few hundreds of thousands of wizards." He commented with brief amusement, shrugging his shoulders once again before taking a swig of his whiskey. They weren't particularly liked, and that was an underestimation. He knew that, he understood that, he lived with it, and he simply didn't care.

What he did care about though, was the way Faustus was referring to Jonathan's mother. He even rolled his eyes in the annoyance, mostly because he really couldn't do anything else. Merlin, was that annoying. Down went the last bit of his whiskey.

Boys, they were so unnecessarily difficult. It was just at that moment that she really did feel like a mother, sitting there with her friend who happened to be a mother as well, while they looked on to their young and restless children. She sighed and shook her head at the mental image, drinking from her cup of spiked coffee, more spiked than coffee at this point, while she listened to the conversation about Death Eaters; not really having much of an input into the whole matter. She didn't bother herself with trifling matters such as that.

Amused at Faustus' comment, she merely grinned before turning to Ophelia and making a comment of her own, "Let no one doubt that he is definitely your son." She chuckled, a brief smirk now on her face at the sudden change of events. But like she had stated previously, she would behave. Words were just words, and comments were forgettable, so it wasn't really a big deal. At least, not to her.

At the question, Patricia merely looked up from her coffee at him before she responded, "Oh, sorry, maybe I should have introduced myself with my full name." She grinned, a bit apologetically as she went on, "Patricia Arlette; this buffoon's mother." She cocked her head to the side in Jonathan's direction to indicate who she was talking about, even if it was pretty obvious. She hadn't referred to him maliciously either; he was a buffoon, but she loved that buffoon of his son and her other children as well, even if they weren't aware she was actually alive. And an assassin. No doubt, it would probably break their hearts, so she preferred it remained that way.

Faustus grinned as Patricia made a comment about him being Ophelia`s son. There were never any doubts about it. Sad that he lately found out about the part of his father in him, but still, the dominant part had always been Ophelia. ”Well, that`s what makes me amazing.” he said, playing with the glass in his hands. In his eyes, his mother was the best a person can be and he was glad to take after her. He was proud of it.

But the mood didn`t stay happy and calm for much longer. Upon hearing Patricia`s full name and her status as Jonathan`s mother, Faustus face dropped. For few moments he just stared at her. Patricia Arlette?! Seriously? He knew all those stories by heart, he knew how Tina felt about her mother. He knew she had died. But it was clearly a lie. Here she sat in front of him, and by what he could remember from his mother, this woman was an assassin. Tina`s mother was alive, an assassin and sitting right in front of him.

He frowned and stared down at the glass in his hands. This was… weird. Impossible, too. The fact that she attracted him was soon simple – she was Tina`s mother. The same blood, after all. It didn`t take long for him to see the similarities between the two and he was completely petrified by that. He wasn`t sure how to react, but he knew that there was no way he could tell any of them the reason for his current state. It became… very messy.

”Well… wow…” he murmured, taking a deep breath and looking back up at her. Then he simply downed his drink.

Ophelia only smiled lightly at Jonathan`s comment. She still found it weird that Faustus never wanted to become a Death Eater. He liked the very same things, he liked to have power and to see other people in pain. But she figured that he wanted more than the Dark Mark could give him. And she still fully believed that it would happen one day. That he`d become who he wanted to become. That was why she didn`t argue anymore. Friend or not, a Death Eater would usually rant out anyone.

But then something happened. When Patricia said who she was Faustus went cold and seemed confused. She watched as he hung his head, realizing that he was thinking about something. Such expression on his face came only few times when she was around. ”Faustus? Is… something wrong?” she wondered, confused by what had happened.

Patricia looked on with a slightly confused expression as she took in Faustus' reaction to her name. Was it her name or the fact that she was Jonathan's mother? Or maybe he hadn't been willing to believe that she was indeed that old so as to have a thirty year old man as a son? Who knew; it wasn't like she was particularly bothered by the situation. Just very curious.

"I believe this is the time where I say, 'age is but a number'." she commented tentatively, as she tilted her head and looked at him curiously. Truth was, she couldn't possibly know what he was thinking, and she didn't particularly like that. People were so easy to read, but he wasn't; go figure. More aspects that ran in the family, she supposed.

Jonathan didn't particularly liked being referred to as a buffoon. He especially disliked to be referred to a buffoon by his own mother in the company of a particularly attractive woman. Nevertheless he took the comment with just a sigh as he poured himself more whiskey. The next series of events however were just a little bit too odd to go by unnoticed. Such a change of demeanor all because of what? A simple name. He raised his eyebrows momentarily, before adopting a look of immediate apathy. He wasn't about to bring anything up right now, but he had a couple of thoughts, some sort of instinct kicking in or the other.

Jonathan tried to remember if Faustus had shown any kind of disconcerting behavior when he himself had told Faustus of his last name. If blowing up a random muggle had been 'disconcerting behavior' then maybe, yes. But so far he had nothing to compare to. However, Jonathan knew better than to not trust his gut instinct, and he especially knew better than to believe anything that was about to be said as an excuse when Ophelia asked him what was wrong.

Even still, he couldn't help but to add in a comment of his own, "Now, don't tell me an Arlette owes you money." He laughed 'easily', as natural as he could be at least. "We're probably notorious for that." His last sentence was uttered carefully, because Jonathan was almost sure Faustus knew someone by the name Arlette before he had met both him and his mother. He just wanted to know who.

Obviously the sudden change in attitude was quickly noticed by everyone in the room. His mother got immediately worried, Patricia tried to make a joke, as well as her son, but he could tell that they both were interested. Faustus cleared his throat and placed the glass back down at the table. He wanted to make the right move and actually gain something from this situation. And knowledge had always been the strongest weapon ever. He picked up the bottle and poured himself more of the whiskey.

Leaning back in his seat, he crooked his head to one side and looked at Patricia. ”In fact, I believe that…” he fell silent for a moment. He wanted to know how she would react. He had to know. ”I have met your daughter not so long ago.” he expressed, speaking slowly, examining her expression at the very same time.

Of course he wasn`t going to tell the truth. But he wanted to know what she would think after he said those words. Therefore he would know what would be her reaction if the truth ever came out.

The sudden change in mood was quite obvious. The expression on Faustus` face was confusing, Patricia`s comment seemed oddly out of place and Jonathan`s seemed pretty accurate. However, Ophelia concentrated on Faustus and him only. She had always been able to read his face without any trouble. But this time it was impossible. He was surprised, obviously, but she couldn`t tell if he was honest or lying or… there was only that little glint in his eyes at the word ‘daughter’. Glint that basically made her heart stop.

She knew him better than anyone else on the planet. She knew that that insignificant glint actually meant that there was a huge mess of feelings inside him and that this wasn`t just another thing. It was something important. She was almost sure that no one else would notice and she knew that she wasn`t going to bring it up. Not until they were left together alone. Faustus had never been able to lie to her.

Instead of saying anything she turned to Patricia and forced out a smile. Unfortunately, she wasn`t as good at hiding feeling as her son was. ”Your daughter…” she only repeated, calmly. Well, this was ought to be interesting.

Patricia looked sideways at Jonathan for a moment as he made the comment, narrowing her eyes in a gesture that clearly she showed she disagreed with his comment. She knew that he couldn't possibly just throw around a comment like that; he wasn't the joking kind unless he was entirely with family or he wanted to make it appear like he was at ease. Motherly instinct or not, she knew that in his own, small way, he was trying to manipulate the situation and she did not appreciate that. And since she didn't appreciate that, she doubted the rest of them did either.

She, however, would never have expected for the subject to turn to Christina. She quirked her head curiously, repeating for affirmation, "Christina?" She let out a small noise of disbelief before addressing him once more, "Are you sure? She holds quite the contempt for criminals. She believes I was killed by one." She informed of the last part with no bit of remorse or guilt. She knew the lie was unorthodox to say the least, but she didn't regret and if she could go back, she would choose to do the same all over again.

However, if it was true and he had met Christina 'not so long ago', then there was something wrong. She looked sideways at Jonathan momentarily, and saw him a bit rigid and tense. Apparently this was news to him, as well. Patricia was definitely going to have a talk with her son, if he was allowing Christina to get into any aspect of trouble then he wasn't taking care of his younger sister well enough.

Faustus raised his eyebrow at Patricia`s words. By that moment he had his expression completely under control. Lying was his second nature and it had never been hard for him to lie – except to his mother. But now he was technically lying to Patricia, so it didn`t count. ”Long wavy dark red hair… unbelievably hot… hooked on poker and doesn`t have the money to pay for her loss… although she did tell me her name was Tina… I suppose it was the short version of the name?” he spoke, completely calmly, as he twirled the whisky in the glass, his eyes never leaving Patricia’s.

”Besides, she only found out who I am the next morning. And by what she said? Yeah, she hates criminals.” He smirked. Telling straight to the mother`s and brother`s face that you have… technically screwed her daughter and his little sister had never been wise. And Faustus didn`t do it because he didn`t realize that. He did that, because he knew that if they got angry or annoyed, they would definitely miss the possible tiny sings that proved that he was lying. In case if they were there. Even if they weren`t, he liked to make sure.

Eventually he took a gulp of the whiskey and looked around the room, at last looking away from Patricia. ”And…. She doesn`t know about you?” he wondered, looking tiny bit surprised. ”You see, she told me that her mother was dead and one of her brothers worked in the ministry. I believed her. Now as I saw you two I thought that she was the first woman to outsmart me. I guess… she wasn`t really, was she?” he turned to look at Jonathan. He was being a total asshole that moment and only for the sake of keeping his tiny secret safe.

Ophelia listened to her son talking, getting more and more concerned. He was not the one to act carelessly or foolishly. She knew that, while there was a big possibility that everyone else in the room thought opposite of it. Of course, what with him telling things that should be kept to yourself. She sighed heavily. What the hell has gotten into him?

But at the same time she noticed how he avoided looking at her. Ophelia knew there was something not right. She couldn`t say what it was, she couldn`t say if this was him lying, because dear Merlin – she couldn`t read his face, but she knew it was something. And that interested her and worried her at the very same time. By saying what he did, he most likely threw any chance with Patricia out through the window (of course, that only made Ophelia happy) but it wasn`t exactly like him.

Yet, if he was so willing to keep, whatever it was, in secret, she was going to help. So that he`d tell her later. ”Dear Merlin, Faustus… you really need to learn when to shut up.” she sighed heavily. If Patricia and Jonathan thought that that was his problem, it would be only better.

So it was Tina that Faustus had met. Raising an eyebrow and immediately tensing up was his only visible reaction to that piece of information for the moment. Of course, he wasn't entirely happy with the situation at all. Just the thought of having this guy anywhere near his baby sister made him want to live up to the world's expectations of a Death Eater and commit a mindless act of murder. First, this guy very bluntly started hitting on his mother right in front of him and Ophelia, and now he was revealing that he had in fact slept with his sister?

Jonathan was sure that if he had not spent almost his entire life pretending to be someone else entirely, he would have surely pulled out his wand crucio'ed the man without a moment's hesitation. Instead, he merely resolved for barely twitching his right hand, and just sighed. He looked at Ophelia when she spoke, raising his eyebrows slightly once more before just shaking his head and stating, "I take this as my cue to leave. Hearing about my sister's sexual escapades doesn't throw me into a verbal frenzy." He stood up, and kissed his mother's cheek, nodding at her whispered request in French for him to come see her soon. He shared the same departing gesture with Ophelia before glancing at Faustus as he said, "See you later." And he meant it. He said another vocal goodbye to the group before walking out of the flat, shutting the door behind him. It was time to go visit his little sister.
