A London Muggle Street; Right outside the Ministry

Jonathan Arlette

Jonathan had been deliberating on what exactly he was to do when it came to this new uprising of the small group. The small mark of a triangle embedded in a circle prevented him from plotting against the group but what he needed to find out was the actual definition of 'plotting' and 'betrayal'. For instance, informing the Dark Lord that a new group was indeed starting, if he had no intention of causing harm, what would that do? Jonathan didn't like not knowing, in fact he was rather annoyed by that fact and had stayed a bit longer at work trying to see if he could get any information at all.

Now, he was walking over to an acquaintance's flat after exiting through the muggle entrance of the Ministry who specialized in dark magic to see if he had anything to say about the actual mark, or if perhaps he had seen it before and could identify the origin. Jonathan was just really going through any kind of contact he knew of to get more information. It was after all his job, a part of his life. He simply couldn't not know anything.

Since when it became that hard to track down a Ministry worker? Most of them were complete idiots and had no idea about safety and fighting. And somehow this particular Ministry worker that Faustus had picked out was impossibly hard to catch. He figured that a person working with Muggle artifacts had to know something about the pendant. Books were no good – he realized that ages ago. There were random mentions, but not enough information for Faustus to know how to stop the pendant from basically killing him.

He was standing by the wall, watching the entrance to the Ministry, growing impatient. Most of the workers had left already, so where was he?! Maybe Faustus should have gone after someone from the Department of Mysteries. But he quickly shook that thought of his head. If he got someone from the wrong section and not the one that worked in the time room? Well, it would be a complete failure.

Just when he was about to lose hope, he saw him coming out. Jonathan, was it? Well, it didn`t really change much. Stretching up Faustus walked across the street and after the man. Just a little bit further from the entrance to the Ministry. Just in case. He was following the man casually, looking a lot like a Muggle, with Muggle clothes and everything. Faustus hated working undercover and not in the streets of the wizarding world, but... well, there were much more chances of success this way.

Eventually when they were far away, his whole pose changed. From a simple man he turned into a hunter. There was about a yard between them, but he quickly closed the distance into about ten feet and pulled out his wand, pointing it at the back of the man. No one was around and.... Faustus didn`t care if there was, actually. It wasn`t his job to hide wizards from Muggles. “If you don`t want to die a sudden and painful death? Stop.“ he said out loud, narrowing his eyes slightly.

Jonathan would have been a disgrace to himself and his master if he hadn't been able to identify that he was being followed. The reason this specific street was chosen to be the exit and entrance for the Ministry was because it wasn't vastly crowded. Given the time it was, there weren't any random muggles around, and the steps amplified in the emptiness of the street were too precise to be simply coincidence. He could have simply turned around and disposed of the threat, but yet again his curiosity ruled his actions so he continued to walk normally, as if he was blissfully ignorant. He managed to slip his wand, however, in the sleeve of his robe for a precaution.

At the sudden threat, Jonathan game to a slow stop, a small smirk on his face that he quickly disposed of before turning around to face his potential attacker. Once he had turned around and saw who exactly it was, he had to continue to work equally as hard so as to keep the same smirk of his face. "Severio," he acknowledged, his Liverpudlian accent still as present as ever, with a slight inclination of his head, keeping his eyes on the other man's wand, making sure he was aware of any sudden movements. Now, this was rather curious. "To what do I owe the uh...pleasure?" He asked, managing to keep a stoic appearance, showing what he assumed would be the appropriate amount of fear, despite the fact he was thoroughly amused and of course, intrigued.

When the man stopped and slowly turned around Faustus kept still. You can never know what some might come up with and he really didn`t want to… well, accidently kill the man before getting any information. That would be just dreadful. Slowly he took few steps forwards, to close the distance between the two. He didn`t want to take any chances and decided that the best way to go was to threaten the man before taking any real actions – and what could be a better threat than a wand pointed at your face?

As he was recognized, he smirked slightly. ”I just love when the Ministry rats recognize me.” he spoke casually, investigating Jonathan carefully. He seemed slightly disturbed, although not as much as Faustus would have liked. That made him a bit more concerned than he was before. Usually people would get a little bit more scared. Something wasn`t exactly right.

”Pleasure? Hardly.” he spoke calmly. ”And just… the usual. Information that I suppose you have.” His eyes didn`t move once away from the man, as he wanted to make sure that this would go his way and his way only.

"A consequence of being a mass murderer I'm afraid," Jonathan commented, pretending to a swallow a lump in his throat as he did so. Merlin, all Jonathan wanted to do at that moment was laugh. Laugh and just tell the man to put the wand down; that it was not necessary, that he was not some simple 'ministry rat' he could threaten to do his bidding except...he was having a fair bit of fun. Not only that, but he did have to keep his cover and Faustus Severio was really no one of great importance in his mind, not enough to reveal himself.

Which reminded him, he really should visit Ophelia soon. He made a quick mental note to do so.

"Ask away," was his only response to Faustus' statement. It was actually a bit of a let down. He was expecting something a little more creative, or at least interesting. So when he said 'the usual', Jonathan agreed. Yes it was usual, and common. But hey, it was a least better than some random ministry murder just for the hell of it. Nevertheless, it was a ways away from his usual routine so he wasn't complaining yet.

Jonathan`s actions gave out fear, but his words didn`t and that made Faustus curiously crook his head to the left, while looking at the man. He wasn`t actually used to such situations. And he was interested in how this all would go. Because by what it seemed, he won`t really need to use any curses to get the information he needed. ”You just have to get famous if you want to reach anything in this world.” he said simply. And it was true.

Everything was simply too easy. And that was slightly worrying him. How could it be…?

”The pendant that was stolen from the Ministry few months ago…” he started, frowning. There was something about this man that was different. He wasn`t only hard to track down but impossible easy to talk to, too. ”You must know something about it and I need to know everything that you know.” he didn`t move the wand away fro a second. Nor his eyes.

Jonathan bit down on his lip to prevent a comment from escaping his lips because he was well aware that they were starting to become increasingly less and less appropriate for someone that was supposed to be scared out of his wits. So with his eyes still fixated on the wand in front of his face he just waited for Faustus to get on with it. It was exciting and interesting in the beginning, but right at that moment it was just an outright hassle. He really had better things to be doing at the moment.

That was, until Faustus mentioned the pendant. No one aside from the Unspeakables, and him of course seeing as how it was his job to know these things, knew that the item stolen from the Department of Mysteries was a pendant; now that was extremely interesting. So, no doubt, Faustus was the one who had taken it. Interesting, and if he was wearing it. . .hmm, it was simply a matter of time then wasn't it?

"The item stolen from the Department of Mysteries is under extreme confidentiality and no one but those working directly with it, know of the true specifics." That was his first answer because, of course, if he really was a ministry worker he wouldn't be giving up the information so quickly. Nevertheless, he pretended to rethink his actions and swallowed again before starting with a stammer, "B-b-but, I do know that the pendant by itself is incomplete."

He was clearly having too much fun with this. And the information didn't mean anything to him or the Dark Lord so he didn't have any qualms with revealing what he knew.

Faustus was slowly losing his patience. Sure, he knew some things about the pendant, but he wasn`t sure about any of them. There wasn`t a normal description about it in any book, they were all different. Of course, the main thing was the same, but everything else was different. The possible affects and so on. And Faustus was impatient to know, because if the book he found last was right? Well, he was going to have to go through even more pain than he had so long and that thought didn`t thrill him. And he just completely ignored the warning about dying. He was strong enough not to die.

And once again Jonathan began speaking with some sort of confidence in his voice, then changed and began stammering. It just didn`t make sense and he frown angrily. ”This is pathetic.” he said, getting rather annoyed by it. ”You`re not going to fool me like that. You`re not scared.” he pointed out. Well, maybe a bit scared, but stammering? That was simply too much. ”Why, I`m not sure. I`d like to know, though.” his eyes narrowed. Something wasn`t right.

But all of that went somewhere away as he said that the pendant was… incomplete. ”What do you mean ‘incomplete’? And what is going to happen if it stays ‘incomplete’?” his voice from calm changed into annoyed. Was it really smart to annoy him?

Jonathan blinked in 'confusion' as Faustus began to get exasperated but in reality, he was just trying really hard not to grin. So either he was really lousy at playing the 'scared ministry worker' act, of the man standing in front of him wasn't as clueless or easily fooled as he thought. Either way, he guessed it was time to drop the charade. It wasn't as fun as it had originally been. It was time to reevaluate the situation. So he let his expression soften, relaxed his purposefully tensed muscles and just shrugged.

"I mean there's a crucial part of it missing. The part that you'll need to survive, or if you're strong enough to survive, the part you need to stop the pain. Which, by the way, how excruciating is it? It's all been theory before now." He was naturally curious, but that didn't mean he was stupid; he was still keeping both of his eyes on the wand.

Jonathan`s expression soon changed. Good. That fake fear was really getting to him and he didn`t want to be more annoyed than he already was. With Tina and that note she left it was just slowly getting to him. And he knew he shouldn’t be thinking about it, but… annoying to hell.

With the scared act gone somehow Faustus actually felt more safe about the whole thing. This man wasn`t scared of him. And therefore Faustus knew that he wasn`t going to run away. He would have been acting completely differently if he wanted to. So, he slowly lowered down the wand, but still kept it tight in his hand, ready to react any moment if anything happened.

”What is that part?” he asked, still frowning. Right, as if he was going to start answering like that. ”And why does it hurt?” two basic questions he needed answers to. There was a ring, sometimes another pendant mentioned. He needed to know what it was. And there were few theories about the pain that came. If Faustus knew the right reason for the pain, it was about to get much worse. Basically because it said that it hurt according to the crimes the person made and the time he had the pendant was slowly coming close to the time he murdered those people. That thought actually scared him.

Jonathan was able to relax a bit more as soon as the wand was lowered from his face. He didn't feel not threatened, but he at least knew that they were in an equal advantage. He had his wand lowered and Jonathan had his wand hidden in the sleeve of his shirt, a simple flicking of his arm would bring the wand to his palm and he would be able to grab hold of it and start spelling immediately. Sure, maybe a half a second delay and sometimes that was all it took but at least it wasn't somewhere inside his pocket or whatever.

"A ring. With the same scarab as the pendant adorning it's surface. And before you ask, no, the Ministry does not have it in its possession." Might as well avoid another breakthrough and a question because after all, there was no time for nonsense. "It hurts in accordance to how much hurt you inflicted onto others. The pendant is originally of muggle origins, charmed by ancient Egyptian wizards. Of course, immortality comes with a price, it judges whether you deserve it or not. In theory, the pendant will continue to hurt you, giving you as much pain as you've caused. If you endure it, congratulations, you're immortal. If you can't, tough luck. It's where the ring comes in. It stops the pain. In theory. If the charm survived, and the ring wasn't tampered with, it should work." It was a bit fascinating of course, but no one would risk the pain without the ring and the ring was pretty much lost.

It was not good news. No, it was the exact opposite of good news; it was everything he was afraid to hear. Wasn`t it just great that in tons of books only the worst part was true? Faustus looked away for one second, concern and worry clear on his face. He figured that the nightmares came when he began creating the plan, and then murder of Krystal`s parents. The easier pains were from using the Imperius curse on all those girls. He did the math. It wasn`t long now until the worst would come. And even after it wouldn`t be over. Everyone he hurt… well, he`d feel it.

Faustus believed that he could get through it. He believed that he was strong enough. It was just pain, nothing crucial and lethal. Well… not lethal if he was strong enough. But he was. He knew he was. And yet deep inside he was terrified. How much pain has he caused to people? He was probably about to find out.

”Shit…” he murmured, clenching his teeth. It was the worst pain he has felt and it was going to be worse. That stressed him out. But not once a thought of taking the pendant off crossed his mind. It didn`t seem to be an option. And that was just exactly as it was with the self defense whenever Tina got near the pendant – it wasn`t Faustus` will. Not anymore.

His eyes were back on Jonathan again. This man just freely gave out information that others would have rather died than gave. Something was wrong, and as he pushed away the thoughts of pain he could see that even clearly. ”You`re not just a Ministry worker… who the hell are you?” he wondered, frowning a bit. ”And why did you tell me all this?”

Finally, a normal reaction. Jonathan was beginning to worry whether or not his information was being wasted on the wrong person. He thought that maybe he didn't have the pendant around, but just wanted it, had found out about it somehow and was trying to find a way to steal it back. After all, any person, no matter how sane or insane they were, would worry about what could possibly be their own death. That was the irony of it. In order to be abstained from death, you would have to face it.

When Faustus inquired about him, Jonathan merely smirked and shrugged, "I'm not?" he asked rhetorically, before shrugging again and deciding to give his full name. Hey, why not? "Jonathan Arlette, I work in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office. And I told you all of this because. . ." he shrugged before continuing, "I have nothing to gain, I have nothing to lose. Where as you, have everything to lose, and even more to gain. I'm intrigued. Besides, it's not like you knowing takes away the risk of you dying." Not even remotely, because yes, now he knew that he had to find a ring but no one, not even him, had any idea where it could be.

All what Faustus could really think that moment was about what was coming for him. It completely took over his mind as he remembered how bad it was as Emily found him in the study. It would be worse and he knew it. And that scared him, but he knew he was still going to go through it. Just that moment he was quite tense, imagining the state he`ll be in.

Some people just had the worst timing in the world. Some people like a random Muggle that came from behind Faustus and touched his shoulder. ”Hey man, you know what`s the time?”

There are certain things you don`t do around mass murderers – you don`t tell them that they are going to suffer, scare them and then eventually startle them. The unfortunate man was just at the wrong time in the wrong place. It took Faustus in total two seconds to turn around and curse the man. He wasn`t aiming to kill him – not in such way, but certain emotions like anger or fear would usually affect wizard`s ability to use spells. The same thing happened that moment. Simple Stupefy went completely wrong and the Muggle? Well, he wasn`t quite there anymore. Faustus` shirt wasn`t white anymore either.

And somehow through all of that he still heard how Jonathan said his whole name. It didn`t take him long to put two and two together. Jonathan Arlette. Of course. Tina used to talk about him now and then. Without knowing it, Faustus attacked Tina`s brother. And then killed a Muggle. That all was quite screwed up. But he was thankful for how everything turned to be – because if he hadn`t turned to face the Muggle, his face would have given out something.

Faustus breathed out and turned to face Jonathan. Then wiped blood off his face with the sleeve of his shirt. What had just happened didn`t have any affect on him. He didn`t have anything against Muggles, but they simply didn`t matter to him. Now although? Jonathan reminded him of Tina and the fact that she… he growled silently. Everything was going downhill. But he tried his best to control himself.

”No ministry worker would give out information to a mass murderer so easily. Especially information like that.” His voice was low as he glared at the man. He didn`t show any way that he recognized the man. What would it change? Faustus glanced at the accidental mess he made. How long will it take for either Muggle police or Aurors to come? He wasn`t like some idiotic Death Eater that always risked everything just for the heck of a fight.

Jonathan simply looked on as Faustus proceeded to let emotions get the best of him. Pity, such a pity. But, once again, faced with the fact that his death could be approaching he was actually taking the situation better than expected, in stride and what not. Jonathan did not care for muggles, they were unworthy that much was apparent, but murder on a whim was something he didn't usually indulge in. Especially such a messy murder at that. He simply chuckled and shook his head, taking out a handkerchief and tossing it over to Faustus so he could better wipe the blood off himself. It was muggle blood; it was simply dirty by nature.

"I would hope not," he commented with another chuckle and a shrug before straightening up, "Is there anything else you want to know before you go clean yourself up?"

Faustus didn`t like hearing that he was going to suffer. He didn`t like thinking that by that moment Tina was sleeping with some random guy. What was supposed to be a simple ‘scare a Ministry rat and get out information’ turned out to be something much more frustrating and difficult.

His eyes were on Jonathan for a couple of moments. He wasn`t just a Ministry worker. He couldn`t be and it was pretty obvious by that moment. Now he only was interested in who he was. Obviously Tina didn`t know anything or she would have told him. He made a mental note to talk to his mother about it – she knew all kinds of people and he was sure that if this Jonathan was involved into anything to do with the dark side, she`d know.

”I`m just going to let you know that the next time I see you? I`ll know who you are.” he said simply. It wasn`t a threat, but a statement. Faustus didn`t like dealing with people who pretended to be someone else than they were. Just that very moment he had much more on his mind than this little detail. Once around he glanced at the blood on the pavement. He was probably covered in blood just as well and he had asked Alessa to take care of Gabriel that night. Well… it meant that he had a whole night to let his frustration out. Thank Merlin.

Without saying anything else to Jonathan he apparated away.

It was late at night and Robin has his black hood up to cover his face. He was standing next to a telephone booth and he was arguing to himself. He was deciding whether or not to call one of his best friends, Oddette. It's been like three months since he last saw her because of what happened to him. He had no choice, he had to leave his life and friends because he was afraid he was going to hurt them. Because he was a vampire. It took him a long time to register that because he didn't believe it, Vampires are not supposed to exist, they are just myths that they tell to little kids to scare them. But time passed and he had to accept that he was what he was, even though he absolutely hates what he has become.

He had to see her. He at least needed to hear her voice and to find out if she was okay. He isn't going to tell her what he is going through because he knows that she isn't going to believe him. He sighed in frustration, he's been standing there for hours (not that he has anywhere to go) deciding this but he hasn't reached a decision. Well, he needs to make one because he knows he won't have another opportunity to call her. He opened the door of the booth and closed it behind him. He reached in his jacket pocket and got a few coins, just enough to make a call.

"I must be out of my mind." he mutter to himself as he inserted the coins and dialed Oddette's cellphone number. He place the phone on his ear and he looked out the booth to see a familiar blond. He knows that she walks down this street at this hour because this is the time she gets off work. Wow, he sounds like a stalker. With the thought in mind, he listen to the dial tone in his ear while he was holding his breath in anticipation.

Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy...

Odette reached into the back pocket of her skinny jeans as she heard her ringtone resounding through the night air and down the street. She had just gotten off her job, and it was pretty late in the night. She knew that most of her friends disapproved of her walking down the middle of the streets at night right after finishing her shift at the gentleman's bar, so it was probably one of them, trying to check up on her. She got tired of assuring that while, yes, she was named for two fairytale princesses, she was more than capable of taking care of herself.

...Grab my glasses, I'm out the door, I'm gonna hit this city...

She looked at the caller id screen and didn't recognize the number. She frowned for a bit in confusion and just shrugged. She didn't have a care about answering unknown numbers. If it was someone she didn't want to talk to, she would hang up. If it was someone that was calling about bills, she would tell them they had the wrong number. Although she was pretty familiar with the numbers of the people that wanted money from her.

She flipped open her cellphone as she kept walking, "Hey, Odette speaking, who's this?"

Robin was tapping his fingers against the glass, a habit of his because he's a bass player. God how he misses playing with it. He's probably rusty if he ever gets the chance to play it again. He heard a ring tone, thanks to the super hearing, and he smiled as he saw Odette walking down the street. She still looks the same as the las time he saw her. If he ever told her that she would probably hit him for that. He frowned slightly that she's walking by herself. She could get hurt because he knows the scum-bags that hang around at night. He actually got to talk to some of them but he really couldn't understand their drunken words slipping out of their mouths.

His breath hitched slightly, oh wait he can't breathe anymore, when Odette answer her phone. For one thing he didn't expect for her to pick up since he's an unknown number to her. He didn't utter a word for a few seconds because he didn't know what to say. 'Hiya! It's me Robin, sorry for not calling you and scaring the hell out of you!' That's a great conversation started.

"Um hey Odette....It's me, Robin..." he said softly and pulling the phone away slightly from his ear. He's going to get an ear full, he just knows it

Odette almost dropped her phone as she heard exactly who it was. In fact, it did slip out of her hands, and every time she tried to grab it, it kept on slipping. She finally grabbed the cell phone and after clearing her throat and breathing in deeply she finally talked to him. "ROBIN VAN DORN! Do you have any idea how worried you made me? How worried you made everyone?! Do you know how much money I spent printing out 'Have You Seen This Hot Guy?' flyers?! Where in the bloody hell are you?!" She calmed down a bit after getting those shouted questions out, and transferred the phone over to her other ear, as she leaned up against the side of a building; she thought if she had to keep walking she would just stumble and fall.

"Are you okay?" she asked quietly after squeezing the bridge of her nose with her thumb and forefinger. She was worried for her best friend. She didn't tend to play favorites, it was a dangerous thing to do especially with three other roommates, but Robin was definitely her best friend. She could talk to him about anything, and she knew it was the same for him. They took care of each other. And it didn't even matter that she was three years younger than him; she tended to act more protective over everyone she knew; especially Robin.
