"All Bassy, huh?" Emma mused gazing at the little ones features as she blinked back up at her and at her Cousin Andy with the big sunglasses. "That's not so bad... Kevin was saying she had my nose and lips earlier. I think he must be blind. She's definately her father's daughter." Emma bit her lip, pondering a moment over this and thinking how seeing a resemblance between father and daghter had to be good sign. It meant there was a bette chance that the baby wasnt Matthew's. "Oh hun, you didnt have to get her anything," Emma stated but reached for the basket anyway, setting it on the bed besdie her. "Now you take a hold of Katie, and talk me through what we have in here. I see baby things," she added , gushing. |

Andy took the baby in her arms and sat down beside Emma in a chair. "well your staples like diapers, wipes, face cloths, recieving blankets, sleepers... all in neutral colours because I've had to make three of these, you know... And then theres a teddy bear, and first tooth and first lock of hair boxes... some sentimental things as well." She said with a shrug. |

"Oh Andy, you're a star. We have a few odds and ends in the nursery at the flat but I was no where near when my waters broke so we came totally unprepared." Emma rifled through the basket, taking careful care and attention over the teensy weensy sleepers and the soft blankets and especially the first tooth and lock of hair boxes. She then took the teddy and sat it on Andy's knee close enough that Katie could focus on it. "Look Katie, look what you cousin Andy bought you." Emma still couldnt get used to it. "Thank you, by the way, for this and all the advice before. I mean the labour and feeding her... just as you said. Much easier to go through knowing what was to come. |

"I really wish that my mum was around when I was pregnant with Leo. I had no idea what I was getting into." She said, holding the teddycloser for Katie. "But seriously, I didn't mind giving you the advice. The one thing I did want after I had Leo was plenty of rest, so I will get out of your hair for now." She said and leaving from the room. |

"Well I had you for that. My mum offered advice but it was rather old fashioned if you ask me and certain aspects, she didnt find appropriate to go into much detail." As Andy began to make a move, Emma took Katie, settling her back in her arms, teddy prodded up at her side. "Really though, thank you hun and pop back any time... bring the kids. The two of us may have a little doze before her next feed." Waving Andy out, Emma settled Katie into her crib and settled herself back into bed, more content to watch her daughter sleep than nap herself. [[Soooo sorry I disappeared last night. ---------------------------------------------------&D'Abugine Baby No2&---------------------------------------------------- Flooing from the Leaky Cauldron, shopping bags in hand just in the slightest discomfort, Emma had slowly made her way up the stairs to the Maternity ward, checking herself in. She was quite surprised at how calm she was being but really, when she'd had Katie, everything was jsut so new and scary. Now she knew what was coming... and they always said when you'd done it once the second time was a doddle. She hadn't had her second contraction just yet but then it hadnt been twenty minute yet. The receptionist had been a little shocked to see her given she was a few days early and given how calm she was. "My name is Emma D'Abugine. My waters have just broken and I've had my first contraction, I thought I'd best come straight in but I don't think there's any rush." An Acolyte had shown her to a room offering her a gown, askign if she was in any pain or discomfort. Emma just set her shopping bags on one of the chairs and clambered up onto the bed just as the next contraction hit, exactly twenty minutes from the first, and winced. Yeah that one really did twinge a little. Remembering her breathing exercises from when she'd had Katie, Emma took a moment to breath. "Im fine. At least for the moment, although I could maybe do with a cup of tea." The young Acolyte laughed and nodded, and asked if there was anyone she could contact. "My husband Kevin is at work... the Ministry in the Auror Department. Of course, he'll need to be contacted. Um... my cousin Gabe works on this ward or if he's not free, his wife Healer Leslie law works on the second floor. Just so I have someone to keep me company until my husband can get off work." The Acolyte nodded and left her to settle in. |

The morning had started off perfectly normally, if a bit harried. There seemed lately to be a frenzy of activity at the Auror Office--there had been an arrest and the bloke was actually in Azkaban; Abi had already been on a patrol that morning; Lina had been organizing getting Tyler into the Manor...everything was just hectic. It heartened him, actually: for once it seemed like things were actually getting done. Maybe that was the frequent attacks in the paper on the Ministry now. More and more people, seemed curious about that 'alternate world'... That article had been a bloody lie--the whole thing had been a trick, and it had almost cost them people they loved very dearly. His stomach turning over as he thought about it, Kevin took a breath and drew another one when the first had not been very much help. Then an owl had come, labeled St.Mungo's and his heart had leaped into overdrive. He'd hurried down the hallway to talk to Abi, only to find she was not there. He waited a total of four minutes before she was coming in behind him, her hair looking as though the wind had decided to own it for the afternoon and a grimly set look of determination that cleared when she'd spotted him. "Emma's having--" "GO!" At least he thought that's what she'd said. It had been an indistinguishable squeal, really, as Abi threw her arms around his neck and then thumped him on the back to knock him out of the office and into the Floo a moment later. His mind spared half a thought to her odd behavior, before his mind was completely focused on Emma and the impending birth of their son. He didn't go directly to the hospital: rather, he went to bring Katie to her grandparents, before getting back into the Floo. He was about to become a father. ...Er, again. Oh hell. Was he really qualified to do this again? Breathing hectic, his eyes and expression were electric with love and excitement as he walked to the desk to inquire which room and found them directing him to the very room they'd been in the previous time. The irony made him smile as he came in and immediately went to her side, kissing her cheek and taking her hand. "Oh good, I didn't miss it..." He said fervently, beaming at her. "How are you doing? Is everything okay? How far along are you?" He beamed and then added, "And I've left Katie's with your parents and notified them, of course. She's all excited about getting to meet her baby brother..." |

After the Acolyte had left to owl Kevin, Emma, left in the privacy of her private room had changed into the hospital gown laid at the foot of her bed. The gowns were hardly flattering but at least hers wasn't pink. She'd be glad when she could change into one of her own nightgowns but for now settled on folding a storing them away in on of the patient storage cupboard, along with the bag containing the baby onsies she'd bought at Baby Land. Emma heard Kevin's arrival before she actually saw him - heard his voice down the corridor at the Healer's station and his footsteps hurrying towards her door. When he passed the threshold, she set her cup of tea (the Acolyte had been kind enough to get for her) onto her bedside cabinet. The book she'd bought in Diagon Alley, was already laid in her lap. She looked up as Kevin entered, matching his smile as he join her at her bedside, kissing her cheek and squeezed his hand back. "You've barely missed anything, except about three contractions but they're not too bad yet and still quite a ways apart... About twenty minutes to be precise." Emma'd l have thought that meant they were in for a long wait but of course, you couldn't predict these things. Things could start moving along faster at any point. "Whole of Diagon Alley bore witness to my water's breaking, but that's an ebarassment I'll get over." Kevin's beam was infectious. and Emma laughed. "I'm fine, really, just excited to meet our son. Couldn't help myself. Bought him a few little things to wear for his first few days in hospital." She nodded to the storage cupboard. "They checked up on me a little while ago. My vitals are fine and so are the baby's but I'm only three centimeters dilated," she groaned, trailing a hand over her large bump, pouting. "I'm almost tempted to say I'm anxious to get into the delivery room but I guess I'm more anxious to get out of it holding our little Toby." But that wouldnt be for a few hours yet. She was glad to hear that her parents had been told she'd gone into labor. They'd be looking after Katie while Emma was in hospital. She knew all to well how excited Katie was was about having a little brother. She'd been babbling on about 'Obee' and her little 'Bwova' for the last few weeks. Emma laughed and nodded. "When I left her with mum earlier, Katie was drawing him a picture. I think it was of you, me, her and Toby but I can't be sure. Your hair was green." Her grin started to falter as she felt the familiar build up of another contraction, and shifting uncomfortably, set her book aside as well beside her cup of tea. "You're just about to witness contraction number four," Emma ground out, gripping Kevin's hand. She winced, hunching over slightly. "I think they're starting to get a tiny bit closer. I swear I only had the last one fifteen minutes ago." The contraction soon past, Emma taking deep breaths but over all she was relatively calm. Apart from the pain, this was less scary when you'd done it all before. "I didnt drag you away from too much at work, did I?" se asked apologetically, patting the spot beside her on the bed. "It's going to be a bit of a wait yet. You needn't of rushed." Of course, Emma was only saying that. Of course, she wanted Kevin there with her. She didnt want him missing anything. |

Gabe was pretty sure by now that Emma had wonderful timing. When she'd gone into labor with Katie, he'd been on duty in the maternity ward and had been able to visit her before the she went through to delivery and this time was no different. He had the afternoon shift and had just been checking the patient's lists at the Healer's station when he noted his cousin's name down and the room she'd been rushed to. Picking up a bunch of flowers and a bear for the baby from the gift shop, he headed to her room and was nearly bowled over by a nervous looking Acolyte hurriedly exiting Emma's room with a cup of ice chips. Gabe had to laugh. He remembered when Emma had had Katie, the ice chips had done very little to ease the pain of her contractions and she'd been rather testy about it. By the looks of things, nothing changed. Chuckling quietly to himself, Gabe entered, sure when he'd asked one of the Acolytes tending to his cousin, that she'd said Emma seemed relatively calm about the whole thing. Then again, by now she had been waiting through contractions for a couple of hours. Emma was in bed, cheeks flushed, teeth ground and by the looks of things breathing down from a contraction. "Ugh... hi. Bad time?" He greeted setting the bear and the flowerson Emma's nightstand, just out of throwing distance. He noted also her wand sat beside her - clearly no one had managed to get it off her this time. "What was with that flustered Acolyte that just left? Last I heard, you were apparently the calmest contractioning mum on the ward." Gabe kept his tone light, very aware of that wand. "So... not long now, huh? How far along are you? Any easier than last time, so far?" |

It had been three hours and Emma had only dilated another three centimeters. Now six centimeters along, her relative calm was slowly and steadily starting to fade away. The first hour and a half had been fine. She'd chatted happily to Kevin and read her book, not yet tired enough to sleep. She'd even managed another cup of tea and a plate of ham sandwiches from the hospital's cafeteria. Calm. Emma hadn't been panicking like she had when she had been brought in to have Katie because she'd done this all before. She knew generally what to expect. The contractions, she could handle for the first hour and a half - they were uncomfortable and they twinged but they werent yet unbearable. Still, she'd gripped Kevin's hand and continued her breathing exercises and then returned to whatever conversation tey'd been having a few moment prior to the contraction. Moving in the second hour however, the calm was slowly starting to fade. Emma was starting to getbored and the contractions were getting closer together and stronger, disrupting her attempts to then try and get as much rest as she could in before the delivery. Patience waning, stomach hurting from the contractions, Emma couldn't help but snap a few times, at Kevin, at the Acolytes... Then to be told she still had hours to go yet.... She wasn't happy. Most calm had left by the time Gabe arrived. Emma had just been told she was six centimeters dilated and had voiced her opinions about that. Then when she'd had he next contraction, on that made her eyes water and made her gasp out this time, the poor Acolyte with them had dashed out to see what he could get to help her and returned with ice chips! Emma had taken one look at the cup and her glare had said enough, the poor guys hurrying out of the room as Emma finish breathing through her contraction and Gabe entered. Huh, was it a bad time, Gabe was asking. Emma merely raised an eyebrow, her hand rubbing her belly and grumbled, "He brought me ice chips." The look on her cousin's face showed he understood her opinion of them. "I am calm!" The words came out a cross between a snap and a grumble. "Im frustrated and bored. I just want to see Toby." She sighed and shook her head when Gabe pointed out it wasnt long now. Well still a few hours but they'd been waiting months. "Im only six centimetes along but Im getting there. Contractions are now about every ten minutes about and starting to hurt like crazy... but I know it's going to feel worse before it feels better." That was always the way. Glancing at the flowers and the bear Gabe had set on her bedside table, Emma smiled. "Are those for me and Toby? Aw, Gabe, you shouldn't have but thank you. You looking forward to being an uncle again?" |

It had not processed at first that really, she had to have known Katie was at her parents--seeing as how she had to have been the one to drop her off, nor had it processed yet that after a solid nine months of waiting and hoping, they were going to meet Toby. And given the increasing irritability, he really hoped for Emma's sake that was soon. He kept his hand in hers whenever there was a contraction, and kept leaning over to brush hair out of her eyes, trying to do some small thing to help her out. This was the second time that he had been sitting here, in this exact same room, awaiting the imminent arrival of his child and he couldn't help the proud and happy smile that had fixed itself to his lips. Emma meant more to him than he ever, ever, knew how to say and it apparently didn't matter that they'd done this before: He was as awed and brilliantly happy the second time around as he had been the first time. He couldn't help but mutter little prayers of gratitude as the hours went on, while chatting away with her in softer and softer tones as she got more, and more snappy. He didn't mind being snapped at. The poor Acolyte on the other hand... Well, screw them, they weren't trying to push a baby out of a three finger-size hole, now were they? This pregnancy had not been an easy or stress-free one, though he had counted his blessings every day that there had been no lingering damage from either the damned ritual last summer, or that wicked, wicked knife that had appeared in their kitchen. The fact that they were meeting their son... It was too good to be true, but dammit that wasn't going to stop them, was it? It never did, after all. He straightened up as Gabriel entered the room and smiled around happily, slightly tiredly and waved with his free hand. Teasing, he inclined his head 'reluctantly' and then grinned, "Doesn't it sound like she's calm?" He squeezed her hand back and then let his smile brighten as he watched Gabe set down flowers and a bear, saying gratefully, "Thanks, mate." His french accent peaked a bit, but he figured that was because he'd been spending far more time in his native country than anywhere else. |

Ice chips? Was the Acolyte mad? After last time surely someone should have taken the initiatve to add the fact to Emma's file that for staff and family safety, she should never been offered ice chips? Calm was an interesting way to describe his cousin, sat up in bed in front of him. Testy, irritable, impatient... Those wuld have served just as well but Gabe was used to expectant mothers, given that this was his usual ward. "Sure you are," he laughed, rolling his eyes in Kevin's direction beforegiving Kevin a sympathetic look. He was the one who had to hold her hand throughout all of this and who had had to sit with her, for how ever many hours she'd already been there, putting up with her grumbling. "The picture of calm..." he noded at Kevin's question with a small grin. "Well, it won't be long now," he pointed ut. "Before you know it, you'll be going into delivery and greeting your son..." He couldn't believe it had been two years since Emma had last done this. His little cousin, the one he remembered as a small kid dragging her dolls in the mud, about to have her second baby. He shrugged when they thanked him for the bear and flowers. "Just something to brighten up the room. I know how boring the white walls can be." He glanced briefly round the room - white walls, white ceiling tiles, and furniture. About the only thing not white was the patterned blanket at the foot of the bed and the grey/green tiles floor. "The bear is a small token for my nephew. I cant wait. I'm an uncle three times now, to Katie, Lara had her baby... little II and soon there'll be Toby." He caught the way his cousin's looked round as Kevin spoke, catching the look she gave him with a small smile. "I'll leave you too be. I have to get back to work anyway. Just hang in there. He'd a few of those looks from Leslie. He'd leave them to their privacy. As soon as they had two little tykes to look after, privacy would be scare. "I'll pop by and see you two later." |

Kevin had been wondeful - Emma could not fault him for his support. He held her hand, he'd brushed aside her hair during contractions when it got in the way. He was being the text book perfect supportive partner and father. She couldn't love him more and he was putting up with such a lot. Last time he'd put up with her nerves and questions and tears of panic. Now he was putting up with her frustrations, boredom, snapping... He had the patience of a saint. Emma didn't know what she'd do without him. There would be a lot more to put up with later, when the contractions got worse and she went into delivery. Then the real work would begin and Emma wasn't sure she'd still be as calm. She listened as Gabe spoke, explaining about the gifts and smiled hearing Lara had had her baby. The family was certainly growing. The universe had been challenging them to extremes this year - she had the light and fading scar across the stomach still to prove that. But if they'd got through all that, bringing Toby into the world shouldn't be too difficult. At Kevin's teasing response, Emma pouted lightly whacking his arm. "It's not fair to gang up on a woman when she'd in labor. I still have my wand." No way she was letting Kevin slip that away from her. "You'd be a tad antsy as well, if you were having contractions and preparing to push out a baby." Still, having caught Kevin's accent coming through, the pout hadn't lasted long. Emma smiled across the bed at her husband with a small smile, very much in love. A couple of hours and they'd be greeting the little bundle, they created together. She barely noticed when Gabe left the room. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emma was exhausted. It had been a couple more hours since Gabe visited and Emma had tried to snag as much sleep as she could between contractions. Given that they were getting closer and closer as the hours went on, however, meant she was only able to catch as few minutes at a time before feeling a fresh contraction gripping her. Her hair plastered to her forehead, cheeks damp with occassional hormonal tears and tears of discomfort from the contractions. Kevin's hand had barely left hers - she wouldn't allow it. Emma kept it in her vice like grip, squeezing every time there was a contraction. He was being absolutely wonderful. The acolyte had been in with pain relief a little while previous but that only helped so much. Labor was still to come and that had to be fairly soon because there had been acolytes bustling in and out of her room every few minutes. Last check, she'd been eight centimeters and already Emma but the last contraction had only been about a minute or two ago and already Emma could feel the next building... She winced, hurrying to try and push herself into more of a sitting position, restless. "Kevin... I think this is it. I think I need to push..." Her grip on his hand was already tightening, her eyes watering as she tried to breathe. No sooner were the words out of her mouth the the Acolyte who'd been hovering over a supply cart at the other end of the room, came over to check her over. 'Yep. You're right. Ten centimetres. Let's bring this little guy into the world, shall we?' She only poked her head out the door a moment to call for Healer Johnson, the Healer dealing with Emma and drew over the cart. Emma meanwhile was concentrating on her breathing and gripping Kev's hand. "I forgot what this was like..." she muttered, as the Healer perched on the stool at the end of bed. It hurt and she was exhausted after forcing herself to stay away throughout the day. And now she had to push out a baby. "Ah....." she winced, squeezing again at his hand. "I hope I can still do this." 'Alright, Emma. So when you feel the next contraction, I'd like you to push to the count of ten, alright?' the Healer instructed, smiling encouragingly. "Nice big push. I'm sure you remember. Second time's usually easier.' "Still hurts like hell..." Emma gasped, shifting into a more comfortable position which proved impossible as the next contraction dawned, but she nodded at the instruction, taking a few deep breaths before pushing, letting out a strangled cry of determination. two...three...four... Merlin, she'd forgotten this. Her eyes were already welling over. six...seven...eight... Emma paused, gasping. How had she done this last time? This hurt, it was exhausting, it was impossible. "Uh... I can't..." Emma sank back against her pillow trying to catch her breath. She'd only have a second or two before the next push. Edited by Emma_D'Abugine, Apr 21 2010, 10:37 PM.

~~~NCP HEaler Johnson~~~ Healer Johnson kept watch at the end of the bed, encouraging Emma also. She,d done this before so she knew what to do and she was strong. He'd read her file, read about the stone slab and how she' d nearly been a sacrifice, he read about the recent stab wound. She'd got through all that so this should be easy. "Come on Emma, take deep breaths. It shouldn't be long. Just a couple more pushes. That's it." He could see she was already tiring. "Alright, just count to ten... Nice big push." Encouraging words or not, Emma was still finding it difficult. In her opinion, the myth that the second time was easier, was just that... a myth. It wasn't easier. It was worse... or maybe that was just because it was happening to her now. Chances were, when this was over she'd be saying both times were about the same. Push. That was all she had to do but it hurt and she was tired. Lifting a hand, Emma brushed the hair plastered to her hot forehead, aside. "I can't..." she ground out, crying slightly in frustration and determination. She could though, she'd done it before so she had to now. She wanted to meet Toby, to hold their son and in order to so, Emma needed to push, she needed to do this. Just a couple more pushes. That sounded easier than it was going to be and Emma tightened her grip on Kevin's hand. "After this... we stop. No more kids. I'm not doing this again! Ughh.......!" As to whether or not her opinion would change once the labor was over, was yet unknown but following Healer Johnson's instructions, Emma bore down again with the next contraction, crying out as she did so. She lost count a second or two into counting, concentrating too much on actually pushing but she felt it...Toby moving... a stinging, before she sank back against her pillow to catch her breat before the next contraction. Different women had different pain thresholds and tolerances and Emma was doing very well, soldiering one regardless of how tired or in discomfort she stated she was. Healer Johnson's gaze flickered between mother and father, and keeping an eye out for the appearance of the baby. Even from the foot of the bed, he could see the sweat glistening on her forehead and the dark circles under her eyes. Childbirth was so draining on the mothers. He really admired them. "You can, Emma. Just think of the little boy you'll have to greet at the end of all this." It always seemed worse when they were going through it but they often seemed to forget what they'd just gone through, the moment they had a bawling infant in their arms. He had to stifle the laugh when Emma stated there would be no more kids after this one. He'd lost count of the number of women he'd heard say that in the middle of labor. "We can always discuss those options after but right now, we need you to concentrate..." Healer Johnson fell silent as Emma bore down with determination, her voice raising up. "That's it, Emma. He's crowing. Just a little longer... Alright, we have a head and a tuft of hair. Well done, Emma, that's great. Just take a breather and then we'll try for a the final big pushes." |
Just a little further, a couple more pushes... one if she was lucky and Healer Johnson was right. They'd finally be greeting their son. A little boy. Nine months they'd been preparing for the arrival of Toby and any minute now, he'd be entering into the world, a tiny newborn. Tired as she was, hot, in discomfort... the thought of holding her little boy was enough to spur Emma on. Clearly Healer Johnson was amused by her stating there would be no more kids after this but Emma really didn't think she could do this again, as much as she loved being pregnant and adored having a baby about the house. Two children was enough, one of each. Their family would be complete. She'd felt Toby move with the last push and to hear he'd crowed, that the Healer could see the head made Emma smile despite herself. Their son had hair! Just a little while longer and she could see that tuft of hair for herself. Emma only took a moment or two to catch her breath, knowning Toby was already very nearly in the world, fuelled her determination. With the next contraction, Emma bore, squeezing Kevin's hand furiously. It was slow going but things were moving along, Toby was arriving she could feel it. Face red, crying out aloud, Emma felt it with relief... their little boy, sliding into the world into the waiting hands of the Healer. She sank back against her pillows with an exhausted sigh of relief, just as a loud wail filled the room. He was here, Toby was finally here and clearly protesting the sudden change of scenery. Emma lifted her lids lazily to watch as he was carried aside to be cleaned up, his cries music to her ears. Distracted momentarily with the passing of the placenta, Emma's attention returned to watching their little boy held in the waiting Acolyte's arms. He continued to cry and yet Emma was still smiling. "We have a son..." she breathed, happy tears, tears of exhaustion already streaming down her cheeks, coupled with an awed smile as their son was carried over, wrapped in a blue baby blanket, identity braclet already around his wrist. Holding out her arms, Emma took a screaming Toby from the Acolyte, smiling teary eyes at their red faced new born as he continued to scream. Emma was besotted. "Hey, little man. Welcome to the world." He was so beautiful, even with his newborn wrinkly skin, and his eyes all balled up. She lifted an finger to stroke the soft dark tuf of hair on top his head, shhing him quietly trying to calm the crying. It took a moment before she realised the reason for all the tears. It had been nearly two years since Katie was this small but a mother never forgot the signs. "Are you, Toby? Do you want some dinner? Is that what it is?" Sitting up against the pillows, Emma adjusted her hold, moving her hospital gown and drew Toby closer to feed. A moment later and silence stopped, like a mute button had been pressed and the quiet sounds of suckling could be heard. "There now, that's better," she murmured, smiling adoring down at the little bundle in her arms before smiling up at Kevin. "A big set of lungs and an hearty appetite. We're going to have our hand full with this little one." Not that she minded the idea of the sleepless nights ahead of them, or the crying. They had their little boy, finally. Healer Johnson watched the happy parents with a smile, hovering at th the end to make sure all was okay before he left them to it. He needn't have worried. Emma really seemed not to have forgotten the signs of a hungry newborn and had Already set baby Toby to suckle. "Well, it seems like you two have everything under control. You have a healthy 7lbs 5 oz baby there. He's a strong one. Congratulations.". He smiled warmly at the two of thm, the other Acolytes packing up behind them. "Well, we'd like to keep you in overnight. Just standard proceedure but tomorrow lunchtime, after both you and Toby here have had some food, you're more than welcome to take him home and introduce him to your daughter. I'm sure she's anxious to meet her little brother." The Acolytes behind him were now filing out of the room, finished with cleaning up. "Right then, I'll give you three some privacy and let you both get to know your son." Offering them another warm smile and a glance at the suckloling infant, Healer Johnson slipped out of the room leaving them to it. |
