Lara lay, looking from one photo to another as Leslie cleaned up, squeezing her hand. "But why couldn't it work out for me?" The words were murmured weakly. Of course, Leslie wouldn't know how Will was. She'd been in the room with her the whole time while Will was being treated by Carter downstairs. "I will, thanks," she nodded. If they'd tell her in reception.

When Leslie offered her congratulations, Lara looked up giving her a watery smile. Leslie was officially the first person to actually congratualte her on being pregnant. "I... thank you. I might actually take you up on that offer." She bit her lip. "I told my Aunt Izzy but mum doesn't know yet. Nor Liam. You're welcome to tell Gabe if you want. Will didn't want me to tell anyone for a while." It wasn't long before Lara was back in her clothes again, stepping forward to hug her sister-in-law tightly. "Really Leslie, thank you. I've really felt like Ive had no one to talk to and I'm terrified." Her tone was earnest. "I don't know what I'm doing or what to expect."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apparating from Will's flat to St Mungo's, they were several minutes filling out forms at reception before they were sent up to the maternity ward waiting room, and shown in to room. Lara sat up on the bed, hands cradling her bump, nervous. A healer would be joining them any minute and they had been kind enough to agree to carry out the ultra-sound Lara was due to come in for the following week, after her check-up, to save two trips.

"Will... you don't think it's a miscarriage, do you?"

Will helped Lara with the papers and sat back as the acolyte came in to give her a wrist band and to take the papers before they were ushered upstairs and to another waiting room, it seriously felt like hours. Once they were brought into the last waiting room, Will pulled Lara into him so she could relax and close her eyes hopefully. "I don't think so, he's moving around." he told her softly, stifling a yawn.

Once Lara's name was called they were ushered into a room for the check up, and Lara was handed a gown to change into. It took all of Will's control not to get up and completely take over for their Acolyte. This poor girl he'd met before, she was a semester behind him, so he knew that this was one of her first shifts, soon he'd have to do a few more classes just to specialize further. He hadn't decided before, but now he knew he wanted to be more than a GP.

5 Reasons I should accept Lara and the baby:
1) I am madly in love with her still
2) It is my baby after all
3) I am willing to pay child support, so why not go one step further and be a dad to the baby?
4) I am hurting Lara more than helping her
5) Did I mention I am madly in love with her and she is always on my mind?

Lara was glad she had Will there with her, and was equally glad he'd insisted she come and get checked up. Will was worried, she could tell. He was antsy and he wasn't his usual chatty self. It only made Lara worry more. "Will? You think there could be more to it... don't you?"

She nodded when she was given a gown to change into by a timid young woman, an Acolyte like Will. She could just see him aching to want to do something. Lara started to unlace her shoes, managing fairly awkwardly before moving onto the buttons of her pajama top. "Will, can you help me? My hands are shaking." She was nervous. "What if it's not all right?"

Turning to look at Lara, he tried smiling. "I am sure, Westie, I am positive our baby is okay, this is just a... precaution." he tried reassuring her, though he wasn't positive himself. He let his knee bounce nervously; because, although he didn't mind being in the hospital to work, it was nerve wracking when it was family in the hospital, and it felt like everyone was making them wait deliberately.

When Lara asked for his help, he crouched down and undid her buttons for her and tied her gown on. "You'll need the bottoms off too, but you can keep your underwear on. And if its not all right, we have to face what we're dealing with head on. We've come too far to back down." he tried giving her a pep talk before returning to his seat, rubbing her back now, watching as the door opened.

Leslie walked into the room and saw lara and will, backed out a moment, checked the room number, then checked the chart. "Well, isn't this a lovely surprise.... Will's not shot, but you.... you're not supposed to be here this early. I realise its nice to be early for appointments, but this is really early... Anyways, it says here you were cramping and spotting? Lara, if you want to just hop onto the table, and I'll keep asking questions as I check your vitals." She told her with a warm smile. Poor Lara, she never remembered having this many problems with Maddie.

She first she used the stethescope to check Lara's breathing and heart. "When did this start?" She asked, grabbing the blood pressure cuff and checking that, she looked at her again as she was releasing the air from the cuff. "Were you having sex when you noticed the spotting?" She pressed on, helping Lara lay down and pulled out a measureing tape. "Were you finished? And can you describe the pain for me." She said as he held out her hand to help Lara back to sitting.

It was clear when Leslie entered the room that she was confused or rather surprised to see them there - her chart would explain why to some extent. Lara offered a small smile to Leslie's relaxed and cheery demeanor. "We didn't feel we could wait and the lady at reception said we could do the scan today as well..."

Lara fell silent as Leslie started asking questions, nodding at the first. She did as Leslie said, clambering up onto the examination table. It had just been one thing after another since she got pregnant. Lara remained silent as her vitals were checked, breathing, heart, then replied as the next question was asked. "The cramps started about two weeks ago, on and off every other day or couple of days...The spotting occassionally over the last week."

The next question caused Lara to redden. Leslie was her step-sister in-law, still she was a Healer. Lara glanced at Will as she answered. "Not when I first noticed the spotting...but we were, when I had my last cramp..." She stood up with Leslie's help. "We weren't finished. I had to stop and excuse myself and found then realised I was spotting again." She moved back onto the table when Leslie had fiished with the measuring tape. "It's like a dull ache in my lower abdomen, sometime a sharp dig but not like when the baby kicks."

Lara fell silent. "Is that... bad...?"

With her brow furrowed, she thought long and hard, these maternity appointments were the death of her. "Well the cramping can be explained by a series of things, but I am concerned because you hadn't finished. What colour has the spotting been?" She asked, helping lara lie back down as she grabbed the ultrasound machine.

Grabbing a blanket, she slid it under Lara's gown to give her modesty and pulled the gown up. "Oooh, someone's been nice to the mothers... you're in luck, the gel is warmed." She pointed out, squeezing some onto Lara's belly. "Okay, so the baby looks okay, you've got quite a bit of extra fluid in the placenta, something called Hydraminos. It just means that there's possible defects but the good news is the baby looks anatomically okay. Are you looking to find out the sex of the baby?" She asked before continuing. "There's only a chance there's defects, I had a bit of extra fluid too, and Maddie is okay. I don't think there's too much alarm, but keep in mind, Gabe would be best suited to answer your questions. I am telling you though that you are on strict bed rest. And Will make sure she stays there." She said pointedly.

"But if you are concerned, I will gladly do an amniocentesis for you." She offered.

Lara bit her lip when Leslie uttered her concerns about their not having finished when she cramped, trying to think back to the spotting. "Dark red... bright red..." She didn't realise the color was important.

She lay back, noting ultasound machine and reached out a hand for Will's. She didn't want him to miss seeing their baby. Worried as she was by Leslie's questions about spotting, Lara smiled as the gel was applied and she got to see their baby. "Look, Will. That's our baby! They've grown!" she breathed, taking in the screen. When Leslie mentioned her findings though, Lara drew her gaze away from the screen concerned. "Defects?" Lara was positively ashen, glancing round eyed at Will.

Lara made a mental note talk to Gabe. "I don't want to know the sex. I want to be surprised in the delivery room but Will wants to know. Don't you?" She nodded at the mention of bedrest, wondering how strict, strict bedrest was. "Fine..." she sighed glancing back at the screen, still in awe at the sight of their baby and their tiny features, arms and legs, hands, feet, fingers and toes.

"What's an am-nio-cente-sis?" She couldnt take in all the complated medical terms. "And if it'll help us see that the baby's alright then yes please."

"Okay, that's not a good sign, but the baby is still moving, and you haven't dropped..." Leslie opened a package of sterile gloves. "Really, think of this as purely professional..." She said, before having Will slip down Lara's underwear just to make sure she wasn't dilating. "No dilation, so there's no miscarriage... And by strict bed rest, I mean your feet only touch the floor when you have to use the washroom, because believe me, if it were ethical, we'd put all bed ridden mothers on catheters." She tried joking.

"An amniocentesis is a genetic test, and we use the ultrasound to guide a needle into the amnioic fluid and we take out some and test it..." She said.

Pauding to think Leslie wrote some things down in the file and then looked back at Lara. "I think I am going to talk to the on duty Maternity Healer and see if you should stay over night until Gabe comes in, or what. I feel like you should stay..." She told Lara sympathetically.

"So, the baby's going to be okay?" If only she'd told someone sooner that she was cramping and spotting, then maybe Leslie wouldn't be mentioning defects. "This is my fault," Lara murmured under her breath. She remained still as her underwear was lowered and Leslie checked her over. She was relieved she hadn't miscarried and wasn't dilated - it was too early. But their baby was alive.

"I can't leave my bed? Can't I go down to see Barty? Then we still have so much to buy for the baby?" Lara pouted at the thought to being bedridden for the next three months. "What if my legs stop working?" Lara reddened before asking her next questions. "What... what about...sex? Can we... are we still allowed to..?"

Lara swallowed at the mention of a needle. She didn't like needles, in fact she was just a tad squeamish. "I'd still want to be tested, just to be one hundred percent sure but... does it hurt?" Why couldn't things just run smoothly for them? Why did things have to go wrong and be difficult? "Stay in over night?" Lara'd never stayed over night in hospital before. She preferred just to go in and get out as fast as she could. "Can Will stay with me?"

Grimacing Leslie took off the glove and looked at Lara. "I didn't say okay, but there's no visual abnormalities, we won't know about inside the baby until the results come back, and even with magic they take a whiel to come back. As far as the bedridden thing goes, the furthest you can walk is the to bathroom and back. If you're going to bathe, its sitting in a tub only, and when you get out, someone has to help you do to the majority of the lifting. And when you're laying down, you're welcome to flex your legs, do leg lifts, whatever your heart's desire, just no walking, lifting or anything of the sorts." She warned Lara.

"This is serious business. Let Will or your mother or someone else take care of Barty, unless you can get there and back without walking. And as far as the amniocentesis goes, I never had it, so I don't really know, I'd think it'd hurt a bit, its a needle, but I am sure we can put on a local anesthetic to help you cope with the pain. If Will wants to stay with you, of course he can. Now, I am just going to go talk to the healer in charge on the floor and see what to do about you." She said, getting up and heading out, and while she was out, she was going to get the stuff and an Acolyte to to the test.

So, things could still be bad... Their baby could still have abnormalities. Lara was very quiet. She nodded in understanding. The test would tell them if there was anything wrong. She didn't like the sound of being bedridden, stuck in the same place day in day out, except for bathroom breaks and even then she needed help getting in and out the tub. Still, laying down she had more freedom to move, apparently.... so long as her feet didn't touch the ground. Lara sighed. "Can we borrow a wheelchair?" If it kept their baby alive though...

"I know, I'm just... not looking forward to doing nothing." She knew her mum or Aunt and Will wouldn't mind stopping down to seeing Barty. Lara nodded appreciatively when Leslie mentioned a local anistheic for the amniocentesis. "Thank you. I couldn't even look when I last had my blood tested."

When Leslie left the room, Lara glanced across at Will nervously. "I'm really sorry I didn't say anything earlier. I'm sorry I ruined our evening." She made herself comfy on the examination table, conscious of the hospital robe and the fact she'd be staying overnight... "You will stay with me, right?"

Will stayed silent, sitting beside the exam table, finding himself nodding off every few minutes. He noticed wht Lara started talking and he looked at her soewhate sleepily. "Shhh, it will be fine... I am scared for your safety more so... we can have another baby, I can't find another Westie..." He murmured, taking her hand a kissing the back of it. "Yes I will stay with you. And all they're going to do is stick you on a dopplar, and hook you up to machines for your vitals. Its not going to be anything too intense, I don't think." he informed her.

Will had been very quiet throughout. He looked exhausted and Lara felt bad. They'd had to wait ages to be seen and it was late and they'd had a buys last few days. They wouldn't be there if she'd have told him earlier - they'd be asleep by now. She felt incredibly guilty. But at his words, Lara shook her head. "I want this baby though. I've spent the last twenty three weeks fighting for this baby." Her eyes were filling up.

"Will... what if our baby's born with defects? Will we... can we...?" She didn't quite know what she was trying to say, or how to put what she was feeling into words. "Thank you. I don't think I could stay alone." The machines looked daunting but if they were just monitoring her vitals that wasn't so bad. "What's a dopplar?"

Lara fell silent a few moments a thousand thoughts and worried spinning round her head. "I'm sorry about all this. I... stopping us mid flow, cutting the evening short, sorry I didn't say anything sooner and might haee hurt our baby in the process and I'm sorry that I'm going be laid up on bedrest and that you guy have to look after me..." Lara trailed off.[/b]

Taking lara's hand and squeezed it, Will leaned over and kissed her. "I know you want this one, but we're young...." he tried reassuring her, but when she brought up defects, Will swallowed hard. "I don't know... kids with defects require complete attention. And since I am working, and I will be taking more classes, I won't be home with you enough. Will you be okay with the work required to have a baby that has defects?" he asked her, he'd support her, after all she was going to be living with him, but he wanted to specialize and he needed a few more classes.

This thought made him feel guilty for his ambition, could he possibly leave Lara with a disabled baby while he was out of the flat for the majority of the day? Or would he just stay in his position and become GP, knowing he could be and wanted to be more? What about the expenses? If their baby needed extra care, that meant either they'd have to hire someone to help, or Lara would be home all day and night and unable to work? If it weren't for him wanting to keep Lara calm, he'd have started hyperventilating. This was one of the reasons he walked away.

"Its not your fault, you never knew, no one told you. And I always take care of you." He said smiling, and he would take Lara back to her home because it'd be easier for Viki and Izzy to help rather than have them come over.

Will's actions were comforting... his first words however were not and Lara sat back blinking back tears. "This is our baby who Ive been carrying and bonding with for the last twenty three weeks. I dont want another baby!" Her voice shook. Of course, she didn't mean she didn't want more children, just that she didnt want another baby to replace this one.

The thought of possible defects had had Lara shivering; she was nervous enough about looking after a healthy baby but if theirs had defects Merlin knew if they'd cope. "Icould find work I could do from home... look after them full-time. You dont have to drop work or courses." Lara paused at his question. It would be difficult, of course if they did have a birth defect baby, she'd have to learn how to take care of them but it was their baby. She didnt care how hard it'd be. "Id' have to be besides, there's no garentee they will be born with defect. They could be perfectly healthy and strong as an ox." Lara wanted to remain hopeful, despite the fact that she was worrying.

"I still blame myself. I mean pain or blood during pregnancy isn't right. I should have checked."She gave Will a watery smile, squeeing his hand. "You do look after me. You keep me sane. I love you and we will have a beautiful family."

Will just stayed quiet, he was already digging himself a hole, he wasn't going to dig a further one for himself. He just supposed he was a realist in that he didn't hold high hopes for the baby. Not to say that he didn't think the poor guy shouldn't live, he just thought that it'd be better if he couldn't have a full life that this be it for him. As this little boy's father, Will would have rather there be no life than one in a vegetative state. That was no life for a child.

"Yeah, I am sure they'll be fine." he murmured softly, all he wanted to know was if their baby was in pain, that was something he wouldn't be able to stand.

It was clear what Will was thinking. He didn't think the baby would make it and Lara hadn't even been tested yet. He seemed so sure about it. Lara didn't want to think like that. Of course she knew that there was every possibility that their baby would have birth defects and the posibility that if that were the case, they might not make it but if she said it aloud, it would make it real. It would mean she accepted the possibilities and she didn't.

Lara wanted to hope. She wanted to be optimistic and if that meant acting in denial of the possible truth, then so be it. It hurt to hear Will state it so matter of factly aloud. As if they could easily move on from something like this if something were to happen. Lara knew she couldn't. But when hespoke again, saying he was sure they'd be fine, she let out a breath. "Thank you," she murmured, knowing whether he believed it or not, it was what she wanted to hear.

"How long do you think it'll take after this test, to get the results? What will our families say about all this?"

It was the day of their scheduled ultrasound, and Declan was thrilled. Luckily it was only a floor up from his office where he was meeting Kel. Things hadn't quite gone back to normal for him after the trip to the alternate reality, and he really wasn't sure what to do. He'd honestly been hiding between his apartment and work while his arm healed (he was willing to do it the slow, Muggle way for a little while he just...sorted his thoughts out). It was strange because his head, he felt, had never been clearer and it left him wondering...

...what the hell had he been doing for the past few years? It just...didn't make sense.

But he was putting all of that out of his mind for now and just focusing on Kel and their baby. Meeting her in the room, he greeted her with a kiss and a smile. "So, you excited?" he asked. "I can't wait. I wonder if we're having a boy or a girl... I kind of hope it's a boy because I feel like I'd be able to relate to him a lot better than a girl...not that I would be disappointed if we were having a girl," he was quick to add. He was sort of rambling in an excited-but-kind-of-nervous way, just praying that everything was ok with the baby.

Kelly had taken off a long lunch break in order to go to the ultrasound that Declan had set up for her. It was probably really, really bad that she hadn't been going to the doctor for progress reports, but the fact of the matter was, she didn't have time.

And that was an excuse. She didn't want to have time. It was something that she hadn't been ready for and didn't want, but she was willing to try because Declan was so passionate about wanting his child. She just didn't want to be disappointed when things didn't work out. The problem was...when the baby started moving? It became less of a 'I'm getting fat and I'm just going to ignore this is happening' to a...oh my god, there's a baby in my stomach. I'm having, a baby. It'd forced her to come to terms with it.

But she still hadn't gone to the doctor.

So now, at twenty three weeks, she was going in for her first prenatal visit since she found out she was pregnant. She was a little nervous, if only because she hadn't had the month-to-month assurances that everything was fine, but when Declan came in so excited, it helped to calm her anxiety.

Kelly had been lead into a room, and she was sitting on that weird chair when he came in, a responding smile flashing across her own face as she was kissed. "I think seeing it's going to be a shock." She admitted thoughtfully, "I honestly don't think I'm really ready for this. It hasn't exactly...set in yet, you know? But I want to know. So yes, excited."

When he said he hoped it was a boy, Kel smiled at him again, "I was kind of thinking that I'd like a boy too." She agreed, resting a hand gently on the top of her stomach, "So how does this work, exactly?"
