"That's interesting," Llian said, taking the quill from her, surprised when it wrote just that on the parchment. Taking the quill, he manually crossed it out, and dictated:

Andy,

I'd love to catch up, but I'm busy tonight. Perhaps tomorrow?

Llian

Though Llian did want to see Andy, he wasn't about to just leave Meredith there. Handing the note to Amara and the quill back to Meredith, he said, "Guess we know how it works now. So shall we head inside?"

"Inside," she said, agreeing. "I heard shouting in the Common Room earlier...think it's safe, or should we go to your room?"

She took the quill back and said nothing about Andy's note, glad he'd opted to stay with her.

"Let's not risk it...there's usually something going on in there," he said, starting to walk back towards Headquarters.

Andy sent Amara back immediately.

Can't, Ryou's busy and there's no one to watch Alfie. Guess I'll see you after I get married then. I was hoping that talking to you would calm my nerves.

Yes, I tried the guilt trip.

Meredith started walking but then saw the owl fly back. "What does she want now?" she asked, unable to stop herself.

Llian stopped walking to read the note from Andy and turned to look at Meredith.

"Mere...I'm so sorry....but do you think we could do this tomorrow night?" he asked apologetically. "I think Andy needs someone to talk to right now," he said, hoping she'd understand. After all, Andy was one of his close friends of 11 years.

Meredith shrugged, trying to act indifferent, but her trembling lower lip betrayed her. "If that's what you want," she said, too quickly.

She turned away, saying, "I'm going to stay here..." she was crying again. Snap. She didn't want him to know it bothered her! "...stay here and think," she finished, not looking at him. She understood that Andy was his friend, but why tonight of all nights? Why now? "Of course, you have your priorities..."

Though Meredith tried to hide it, Llian could quite easily tell that she was crying again.

"I want to stay, Mere, but Andy can't really do this another time," he said. "She needs to talk to someone...I think about her wedding... It probably won't even take long," he said. "She probably just needs someone to calm her nerves...but I think I should at least go talk to her."

"No, sure, go ahead, Llian," she said, her voice catching as she tried to mask her tears. "I told you, if that's what you want. Priorities, remember?"

She started to walk away from him, miserable. "I'll be out here if your conversation doesn't take that long...come find me?" She betrayed her indifference with the question, though she kept walking.

Llian nodded, but that didn't make much difference, considering her back was alreayd turned, and she was walking away from him. Knowing he could say nothing else to make the situation better, he apparated to Diagon Alley to meet Andy.

Meredith turned to say good-bye, but he was already gone. The tears came faster now, and she ran towards the water, kicking her sandals off and letting the water swirl around her feet. She stepped back up onto the dry sand and curled up on a large, flat rock - she knew Andy would keep him there if she figured out who was waiting.

So, rather than sit and be miserable, she cried herself into a half-asleep, half-awake state, thinking about what she'd said to him about priorities.

And then she fell asleep.

Llian apparated back to the lake, extremely surprised that Meredith was still outside. He noticed, though, that she was asleep, and felt bad to have kept her waiting for so long.

Gently he picked her up, making sure she didn't wake up, and carried her back inside to her room.

Conner came to the lake to think. he need ed a good lot of time to think about it all, Ali with Wes, the puppy, the time when Ali ran away, and if this all fit together.
The joyous discord, the dull harmony.

Meredith wandered out to the lake, needing to think - everything was so messed up, it was ridiculous. She'd told Llian she loved him, that hadn't gone over too well. Andy was being nice, but it couldn't last. And to top it all off, Llian couldn't make up his mind, even though Analia was sure he would choose Meredith.

Analia came outside to the lake for a leisurely walk, but upon seeing Meredith, she headed up to her friend. "Hi Mere!" she said.

"What's wrong? You seem...confused," she remarked, searching for the right word. "Everything ok with Llian ?" she asked.

"Hey, Analia," said Meredith, as she saw her approach. "I don't know..." she said, staring out at the water. "I might have made a mistake the other night, after you told me you were moving on...he's not making a choice, and I can't be as confident as you are..."

"Well, not yet...but he'll make a choice soon," Analia said. "I mean, for a guy as afraid of commitment as Llian is, this is moving positively quckly for him," she laughed, although she was serious.

"And what do you mean, you made a mistake?" she asked, concerned. "What happened?"

"Afraid of commitment..." said Meredith, laughing a little as well. "I guess that's one way to phrase it..."

"We were together," she said, "right after you left, and I wasn't thinking about consequences, and I told him I loved him - I meant it completely, that's not what the issue is. But he acted all shocked, and said he couldn't say it back, and then things got more awkward...Maybe I shouldn't have said it..."

Analia sighed. "Well, you should tell him how you feel, but if it makes you feel any better, that's a man's typical reaction when he's not ready to say "I love you" back to somebody," she told Meredith.

"But he'll come around," she said confidently. "I know he will."

“You say that now...” Meredith muttered to herself. “I suppose that would be a natural reaction,” she said, unconvinced. “I just don't get how he doesn't feel the way I feel – it seems so right, so perfect...and he doesn't get it.”
