Oh, dear merlin. Was there a rational thought in his head? No. Kevin- say something. Anything. She's looking at you- looking you in the eye. You know that look. You've always known that look. Kevin. You're staring. Say... "Right." He said this aloud, looking at her, his face either impassive or a dead give away. It was hard to tell. Nice. One syllable. Time to add another word..."Ok." So this, 'thinking under pressure" thing? Wasn't working so well for him. |

Julie had absolutely no idea what that was supposed to mean...those two syllables. He was trying to remain calm, that much she could tell. She didn't want to pressure him or anything, but she unconsciously moved a step closer to him. "I....I got recertified as an Auror today," she offered the information. Perhaps a change of subject would do them some good. |

As it was a natural thing, he didn't even notice she was moving closer to him. The change of subject definately helped, for he said slowly, "Wait-is that even a thing? You don't have to redo training or ....was it something special since you didn't voluntarily leave..?" He took a deep breath, and said slowly, "How..is this possible anyway? That you are alive, I mean. Well, that's an awful way to put it.." Kevin really wanted to kick himself. |

"They gave me a test to see if I remembered everything, which I did," Julie told him, taking another step closer to him. "Kevin, for me...it's hard to explain. But when I got my memory back, it was just like everything from four years ago had happened yesterday, perfectly fresh in my mind. I never really forgot anything." She sighed at his next question. "It was Matthew Berenson. He found me at Headquarters alone and knocked me out. Instead of killing me, he wiped my memory and brought me to Australia and leaving me with a fake identity. For the past four years I thought I was a Muggle named Elisabeth Gradiel," she explained. |

"Oh." Kevin remarked lightly, furious. "So not only did Matthew nearly have Emma kill me, after attempting to kill me himself five months before that, but he was the reason I thought you were dead for four years, and..." He didn't want to finish the sentance. He was happy with Emma, and he did love her. The bitter fact was...Julie was too late. |

Julie could feel a couple of tears threatening to fall, but she brushed them angrily away. No one - not even Kevin - was going to see her cry about this, of that she was determined. "And now we've missed whatever chance we may have had," Julie finished for him bitterly. |

Both a grimace and a smile crossed his face at the same time as Kevin realized she'd finished his sentance perfectly, and could still do that...and realized what she'd said. "I..." He didn't have another word to add again, which was annoying. His face softening slightly he tried a different approach, "Yes, I suppose we have." Ouch. Was it really bad that he felt like his heart was aching? He was happily married. He had a baby on the way- they were happy! Why was this so hard? Because you still love her.. A nagging voice in the back of his head said, but he ignored it. |

Hearing Kevin admit that there was really no chance was the worst. It was like the pain in her chest increased tenfold, even though she hadn't thought it possible. She'd really lost him, and she knew it now. It was like funerals for some people: the realization that someone you truly love is gone forever. Only she wouldn't be able to get over Kevin. He'd always be there with his wife. And she'd always have to see them together. Maybe that transfer wasn't such a good idea...but the French Headquarters held so many memories of them together.... It was too late to make any sort of decision, so it would have to wait till morning. "So....this is it then?" she asked, taking yet another step. |

This shouldn't be so hard...but it was. And Kevin's resolve was failing him now- as she continued moving closer. He noticed it now- it was both welcome and the worst thing ever. But he didn't move. He couldn't- this wasn't the way it was supposed to be. This was all wrong- he wasn't supposed to be married. They'd ruined their fairytale ending. Or- he had. He was still in love with Emma- he knew that. But he was still in love with Julie too- and that was what was hurting him so much at the moment. And he couldn't find an answer to what she had asked- what should be such a simple answer. Faltering over his reply, he finally said, "I...don't know." |

It was strange, this duality of her emotions. One side of her was completely and intensely relieved at that statement. She knew at least that he still loved her. But she hated the statement as much as she loved it. Now she couldn't let go: there was no closure. Maybe one day there would be...or maybe (and this was what she didn't dare to hope) she wouldn't need to have closure. She stopped moving forward, knowing that in about another step, she'd be directly in front of him, and she didn't want to be tempted to do something she'd regret. "You....don't know," she echoed before saying frustratedly, "Kevin, what am I supposed to do with that?" |

Getting just as frustrated, Kevin was undergoing the same feelings she was- and he noted her conspicously stopping, a step away from being right in front of him. To be honest, he didn't trust himself right in front of her either, and out of a nervous tick, he started rubbing his wedding ring with his thumb, inside his pocket so she couldn't see that. "Well, how am I supposed to know? I don't know what to do either!? That's what I just said!" He didn't mean to snap at her- but he was losing all sort of reality by this point. And it wasn't really snapping- he was responding as frustratedly as she was. "Look, I'm..I'm married. I'm married.." He was saying it for his own benefit, not hers. He had to remember that. Emma. Think about Emma. If he didn't think about Emma, he was going to regret it.. |

He was married...but hearing him say it didn't make it any less painful. In fact, it just added to everything, and she had to look down again, focusing on the snow on the ground intently and willing herself not to cry. Luckily for her - just about the only lucky part of her day, it seemed - she didn't. "I know you are...and Emma...she's a great person," Julie said, faltering slightly before giving up. She couldn't do this...she just couldn't. |

As Julie dropped her gaze, Kevin bit his lip as he really always did, and he nodded. "Yes...she is. And..I couldn't do anything to hurt her...even after Matthew." He hadn't really meant to say that- but he'd been thinking about the eerie similarities between Julie's reappearance, and Matthew's. He didn't think she was death eater..but.. |

Julie looked up at Kevin curiously. She avoided direct eye contact though, knowing that would be too much for her to handle. "What do you mean 'even after Matthew'?" she asked, wanting to know just what her "killer" had done to Kevin and Emma. Couldn't he just avoid hurting people? |

Kevin winced, his lip now quite raw from biting on it. "Uh..well, Emma and I have had a lot of...issues with him attempting to get her back...he put her under some bonding potion, she nearly killed me...but couldn't, and we broke the bond.....by getting married." And he wasn't going to mention the fact that she'd slept with Matthew. Because if he knew Julie...that would lead to things he was going to regret. He was suddenly very glad she wasn't making eye contact- and wouldn't realize there was more to it. She was staying silent, and he nodded again, taking a step backwards. Clearly- nothing had been resolved, but he was tired- and he nodded one more time. "I suppose..I'll see you later this morning?" He walked away slowly, willing himself to think of nothing else at all. Breathe in. Breathe out. |

'Yeah, I'll see you then," she said, absolutely crushed as he walked away. It was only then that she let the tears fall, though she didn't spend too much time having her small pity party. After a few moments, she brushed the tears away and headed inside. Perhaps sleep was a good idea. And she headed inside to do just that...or try. |

Keeley bounced around anxiously outside; Cal had sent her a letter saying he was on his way home, or, at least to England, and to wait for him outside. So she had immediately flooed from home, pictures in her hand and beyond hyper. She had missed him a lot, more than she had really realized. Finally she sat down at the edge of the lake, not going in it because of what Cal had said about amoebae. She amused herself by throwing rocks into the lake, attempting to skip them on the surface. Catriona apparated to England with Cal, putting a disillusionment charm over the Shetland so Keeley wouldn't see it at all, wouldn't notice it. She said her good-byes to Cal a ways back, only following so she could stand at a distance and remove the charm when she was supposed to. “Keels!” Cal said excitedly, not realizing just how glad he'd be to see her. He saw her standing there, and took the pony's lead rope, and headed over towards her. “I have a second present for you, you know.” He smiled warmly, and hugged her the minute he got over to where she was. |

Keeley turned around when she heard her name, and her eyes immediately brightened. Running away from the lake, she nearly tackled Cal with the force she hugged him with. "I missed you!" She dropped the rocks in her hand and grinned, widely. She knew she had missed him, but merlin she didn't expect to feel so giddy. Hugging him again, she simply asked, "How was your christmas?" She loved his present to pieces, she didn't expect another. |

Cal laughed at her excitement - as long as it'd taken to get used to her, now he had started to take her presence for granted, and had missed his hyper companion an awful lot in Scotland. “My Christmas was fantastic,” he said, “I got a broomstick, it was a bit weird – but Kat gave it to me, so I guess I won't totally ignore it.” He smiled, and shrugged, his hair falling into his eyes due to a lack of haircuts. “Come on, want the second present? I know you'll love it.” |
