Edward listened to her, rather taken aback. He didn`t expect that. None of it. She didn`t look like a person who would have gone through a hell like that. He misjudged her. Obviously, Julianna wasn`t an usual woman. And he found that hard to believe. Denial was always easier. He raised the cup to his lips and took another sip, not even realizing that the coffee was cold already. He did that as a reflex, not thinking about it. Not wanting to think about it. Slowly he pulled his eyes away from her, and chose to stare at the ground, without even seeing it. What was he supposed to say? That people who done that to her were jerks? Not sensitive enough. Or that he was sorry? Way too sensitive for him to say it. Once again, he chose silence. Because that was the only thing actually left to him. |

Juls didn't look at him, still struggling. Finally, she swallowed and just let go of her rigid stance, almost wilting. The silence grew longer, and more awkward for her, as she waited for a reaction. Anything. But she knew she wouldn't get any.Why would he care? Why did she even say that? Why would she put those things into sentence form, when she was trying so damn hard just to forget it? She snapped. She snapped, because she was so tired of people pushing her away for no apparent reason. Finally she took a deep breath and turned to look at him, just to find him zoned off in a different direction. Quietly, she apologized, "I shouldn't have told you that." Juls shouldn't have said anything about it. It'd made things tense and awkward. Her cheerful mood was completely gone. |

Edward realized that the silence became longer and longer, but he didn`t do a thing to end it. He didn`t know what he could do. He searched his mind for any words to say, but they either made him look like a total asshole, or they were too sensitive for him to say. At last as she spoke, he turned to her, seeing that she was looking at him. At what she said, he exhaled. No, it didn`t matter. She didn`t have to apologize for saying all that, he didn`t mind. It actually made him realize that he was really wrong about her and that was good. But for some reason, he didn`t want her to know that. "Yeah... you probably shouldn`t have." he said, knowing it went against his thoughts. But it always was like this. He just wasn`t good at this and he couldn`t control it. It was him. |

When he looked at her again, Juls' eyes sharpened, expecting to see indifference, maybe pity, even disbelief. Anything like that. But as usual, she couldn't really read what he was thinking, other than the fact he sighed. But when he finally spoke, it took her a great effort to cross her arms again and just shrug a shoulder, attempting to say nonchalantly, "Just forget it. It's not important." It was important, it was to her. It'd been her life. Her life for almost two decades. But rarely did she let it hinder her. Rarely did she let it pull her down, stop her. And she never, ever talked about it. No one knew the full story. No one ever would. So she tried at light-heartedness as she asked, "Is that any good?" Referring to his coffee. |

Edward realized that that 'forget it' and 'not important' wasn`t how she actually felt. But it did mean that they could drop the subject and it was good. He didn`t feel like talking about it. He didn`t want to know it. Because knowing things made people bond and he definitely didn`t need that. As she talked about his coffee he blinked. "What?" he asked. Looking down at the cup he realized that the coffee was cold already. How come he didn`t notice that when he was drinking it? "No, it tastes like crap. It`s cold." he mumbled, with a small frown. Putting the cup down he glanced at the flowers. Ah, he did ruin her mood, didn`t he? "Want coffee? I can get you some hot instead of cold?" he offered, trying his hardest not to think. |

Juls just smiled, however slightly, when he said that his coffee was cold. Strange, he hadn't made a face when he took a drink. Then again, he was obviously not focusing on it. And he asked if she wanted coffee. So with some super-human control she didn't know she had, Juls just let it go, and actually smiled. "I'd love some." She answered quietly. Damnit. |

Edward nodded and motioned at the direction of few couches and a small table. "Make yourself comfortable." he said, before turning around and walking back to the kitchen. Once he was there though he exhaled angrily and ran his hand through his face. This was annoying, the fact that he couldn`t stand actually feeling happy for her being there, was annoying. He knew women, through all this time he knew how to act with them. But every since that night with Julianna, he didn`t know how to treat her. Leaning his head against a cupboard, or more likely hitting it, he closed his eyes. This was wrong in so many ways. And yet, he was only a man. Placing the cup down on the counter he turned to his house elf, who was looking at him strangely. "Stop staring and get to work." he spat out with a frown. "Bring two cups of coffee and two glasses of brandy to the front room. And for Merlin`s sake, don`t spill it this time!" he snarled, shaking his head. Slowly he left the kitchen and walked back to the front room. He was trying his best to keep the frown away. But there was a lot of stuff in his head. Sitting down on the couch he didn`t say much, but just ran his fingers through his hair. |

Juls nodded and walked over to an armchair, sliding her legs underneath her as she sat down. Maybe coming back wasn't such a great idea. She'd been bored, and tired of the melancholy of the den... And so she walks into the same here? Stupid girl. The longer that she sat there, the longer she felt uncomfortable sitting. Like she wasn't wanted there. So when he came back, and sat down, she told him silently, "I can leave if you want me to." Despite her intentions coming here, she didn't want to stay if she wasn't wanted. Then it'd be exactly the same as at the Den, and she could find something else to do. |

Edward quickly looked up at her as she spoke. He was a horrible person to be alone with. Especially if he had something in his mind, that he couldn`t actually say. His eyes stayed on her for a few moments, then traveled down her body and stopped on her waist. Just because he couldn`t let her see his real feelings in his eyes. "I`d rather that..." He spoke silently, his eyes still fixed at her waist. Of course he didn`t want her to leave. But maybe he did want, because every time she was anywhere near he was going slightly crazy. And all because of one woman. "I`d like it if you stayed." He answered at last, looking up at her once more. "I know I`m not such a good company, but I figured that if you are here, you don`t really have somewhere else to go. And I don`t want you wandering around. So yes, I`d like it if you`d stay." This wasn`t the real reason, but he hoped that it was enough. With a sigh he pulled the tie off and unbuttoned the first button of his shirt. For some reason he was feeling a bit tired. |

Juls watched, lacing her fingers together on her lap, trying to see what he was thinking through his face. The damn man was pretty imperviable, though, and she just sighed at the scrutiny. And then he seemed to be staring into space, in the general direction of her stomach, and started to speak. As usual today, the words didn't seem to want to come out, and yet, eventually, it did. "Well I didn't want to be intruding if you have something going on." She told him, but she didn't move. And then she admitted, "Yeah, I can figure out somewhere else to be, but I came because I haven't seen you in a bit and I was bored." So he told her that he'd like it if she stayed, and Juls just settled in, smiling. She had to ask curiously though, "Why do you wear those?" Ties and such were for formal occasions, weren't they? Or maybe he was the kind of guy who wore them all the time. It was just another thing she wanted to find out. |

Edward watched her, and slowly a small smirk appeared on his lips. It wasn`t happy, wasn`t sad. He just found this whole situation strange. As any other situation so long, involving her. He opened his mouth, but then the house elf came in, putting two cups of coffee and two glasses of brandy on the coffee table. As it left, he glanced at Juls and then at his tie. "Because it makes people believe me." he spoke seriously, laying it down on the couch. "Makes people think that I know what I want and that I`m sure of what I say. People who know how to dress always keeps things in control." he confessed. And yet, it wasn`t entirely truth. Now he wasn`t keeping himself in control. He shouldn`t have let this woman throw him off every time she came. But he let her. because it felt good. |

Juls smiled slightly at the house elf when he gave her her coffee, and she took a sip of it before nodding. "Oh. My friend, well...Elena's like that too, she thinks the better she'd dressed, the more power she'd give given. More respect. So I suppose that's understandable. I never really had to deal with anything like that myself, but..." To each their own. But she gave a quirky smile as she pointed out, "So you like control?" As if it wasn't obvious. Juls just continued to drink her coffee. |

Edward shrugged. "Unless your friend is a slut, it doesn`t matter much." he spoke, for once trying not to think at how she will react or what she will do. He was tired of thinking. "Clothes won`t take you anywhere. You need to know what to do as well." he explained, watching her closely. At her question he changed his sitting position, trying to get comfortable. "I like to know that I can control what is going on." he spoke honestly. "To know where things are going." |

Juls frowned. A slut? Elena? As if. "No, she's not. Not that you obviously care." Juls shrugged, and then tilted her head to his next statement. "In addition to? Presentation as well as brains." But then he answered her teasing question, and she smiled. "But then you won't have any surprises in life." Sometimes surprises were bad, but a little gesture now and again when she wasn't expecting it, or an actual good surprise, she didn't mind at all. Enjoyed, actually. But she didn't mean he didn't like surprises at all, did he? That'd be a very boring lifestyle, she'd think. Though, she was certain he didn't control the fact she was there, so that was...sort of unexpected. |

She was right. Edward didn`t care at all about her friend. She could have been the worst person alive, or the smartest, he wouldn`t care. The whole aspect of 'care' was still new to him. "Well... usually I hate surprises." he answered, picking up the glass with brandy instead of the coffee. "But lately... I`ve found them entertaining." he admitted. |

Juls smiled when he said that lately he found surprises entertaining, because she had no doubt in her mind 'lately' included her. To a point, of course. She had no clue what really went on in his life. Whether a pleasant surprise came from those disgusting men from the first day, or some other person/woman between then and now. Who knew? "Surprises can be annoying..." Juls allowed, "But most of the time they're rather uplifting. I can't see why you'd hate them. Unexpected situations give you a chance to challenge yourself, don't they?" She shrugged. |

"Well..." Edward spoke, drumming his fingers against the glass, "As obvious as this might sound, you can`t be prepared for surprises. And if you can`t be prepared, would mean that you might be vulnerable. And that isn`t something what person would want to feel." He took a gulp of his drink. "Then again, it all depends on the surprise." |

"Vulnerability is human nature. You can't be untouchable all the time, its just not possible." Juls pointed out, leaning forward to rest her elbow on her knees, resting her chin on the hand held up that way. "If you're not prepared for something, you learn to adapt. Improv, you know? Whats wrong with that?" She honestly didn't even know why they were discussing surprises, but she smiled, and said, "But then again, its up to each person's opinion on the matter." |

Edward listened to her speak. He knew answers to her questions. But he highly doubt that she would understand. Probably as same as she wouldn`t understand why it was so important to keep the blood line pure. It was just as same. Not show weakness. His life was based on that. "And you think that the opinion can`t change?" he asked, wondering what she was thinking about it. |

At his next question, Juls just took another drink, and then shrugged a shoulder, "Opinions change all the time. Most humans are rather fickle. Another fact of life one just has to get used to." She sighed, and leaned back into the chair again, her eyes looking back at the ceiling. "And where as fickle isn't exactly a good thing to be, neither is being so set on one thing that it destroys you." And that wasn't just her, not at all. History proved it again and again. |
