Leading the way into the flat, Emma made her way into the empty spare room or Kevin's French flat... okay their flat... It felt weird to suddenly think of it that way, but if they were to be living there at some point after the baby was born, she'd have to get used to it. Dropping her should bag to the ground, Emma turned to watch Gabe follow her in, a couple of large boxes piled up in his arms. "Oh, you can put those down just over there," she instructed, pointing to a space on the floor over the fluffy fawn colored carpet. "Thank you so much for helping me with all this. What with my wand still no where to be seen and work, I haven't been able to do any of this myself... apart from the shopping part." It had been a busy Saturday morning to say the least. Emma had made the decision to fish around in the back of the wardrobe, and finally pull the bulging bags of baby things she kept buying and hiding in there, back out into the open. The baby was growing at a steady rate now and Emma thought it was about time that something was done about the nursery, or at least moving the baby purchases to the flat. The problem was, these bags were rather large and Emma what with the extra weight and not really being allowed to lift heavy objects, couldn't lift them. Then there was the annoying fact that her wand still hadn't shown up, so she couldn't shrink or lighten the load. This meant that it would be impossible to collect her old cradle and baby changing table from her parents as well as her mum's old rocking chair... This is where Gabe had come in. She hadn't seen or heard from her cousin, since he and Meredith had visited her office, to tell her they were a couple. They were long overdue for a chat and he'd surely be willing to help her take the stuff to the flat. So she'd Owl'd him and he'd Owl'd back saying he'd be happy to help and wanted to talk to her anyway. That morning Gabe had shrunk and Emma had boxed up, several bags of baby things, Emma was sure Kevin had no idea she had sneakily bought on a whim, any and every time she was in Diagon Alley passing the baby shop. Then boxes in hands, Emma's lightened for good measure, and headed to Emma's folks house to shrink, lightened and pick up the crib, changing table and rocker. Then it was on to the flat. Looking around the room, now filled with boxes, Emma grinned, ideas for decorating already popping into her mind. "Any chance of that rocker back to size again? My feet are killing me." Gabe resized the rocker at her request and set about poking around the contents of the boxes. Emma got a good look at him while he did this and soon came to decide that he looked distracted. Something was worrying him, something was on his mind and perhaps that was what he had wanted to talk to her about. "Everything okay?" she asked curiously, pulling a of soft yellow wallpaper with a yellow ducky border out of one of the boxes and unrolling a bit to scrutinise it. "All going well with you and Meredith?" |

Gabe really needed to talk to someone or at least do something to keep his mind occupied, and the chance Emma had given him, to spend the day away from his flat and keep busy with moving boxes and even a chance to talk and use her Oprah skill, was just perfect. It couldn’t have come at a better time. It really had been ages since he and his cousin had last chatted and he felt she should know that he and Meredith were no longer together… perhaps know what had happened when she left him… it might even help him to clear his head if her told her what had happened with Leslie. Arriving at the Head Quarters to help her pack up the baby purchases, had taken much of the morning, as had the ‘brief’ visit to his Aunt and Uncle’s – her parents. They’d fussed over the both of them, asking Gabe about work and such and Emma about how the baby was doing. She really had grown remarkably since he’d last seen her, she practically looked fit to burst and it was no wonder to Gabe that she felt she needed a hand in moving everything… He was also rather glad that she didn’t have her wand… he knew all to well just how dangerous having one around could be when in the hands of a heavily pregnant woman. It was something you came to learn when working in the maternity ward as he did. The morning he’s watched her get sniffly over baby clothes, fairly snappy when it was suggested mid morning she sit down and take a break and rather frustrated when she was unable to reach down far enough to pick up a fallen toy off the floor, her rounded stomach proving too much of a barrier. He couldn’t wait to have another cousin or be like an uncle, which is what Emma assured him he’d be much more akin to. Emma had apparated them to the flat and the pair had carried the boxes into the spare room, soon to be the nursery. It was a spacious flat, Gabe noted – double bedroom for Emma and Kevin, the spare room for the nursery, the kitchen, living room and bathroom… prefect for starting their family. Setting the boxes down in the nursery, Gabe obligingly took out and resized the ancient rocking chair, watching as Emma slowly eased herself into it. Just how much stuff for the baby, had Emma snuck into their wardrobe to hide under Kevin’s nose? He set about resizing the old changing table and crib and turned at Emma’s question. They’d spent the whole morning working and hadn’t had a moment to talk about the topic. He guessed now was as good a time as any. ”Meredith and I are no longer a couple… she cheated on me… and when I said I loved her, she didn’t or couldn’t love me back. She wasn’t ready for a relationship,” he sighed, taking the ducky wallpaper from her and looking over it. ”You used to have wallpaper like this, up in your nursery… can’t believe I even remember that. |

Wallpaper in hand, Emma took in the size of the walls and the number of extra rolls of paper in the open box beside her. She’d bought enough, right? She’d never intended to pop into that DIY shop to look at wallpaper it had just happened on impulse and seeing the ducky wallpaper and remembering flashes of her old childhood nursery, nostalgia had over powered her, until she had five large rolls in a bag, hidden at the back of the wardrobe. It was good to know she had Gabe to share the past memory with. Emma froze at Gabe’s words, looking up with a raised eyebrow. ”You love her? And I’m hearing about this now, why? Who did she have the affair with? Did she say?” Emma let him take the wallpaper from her and squeezed his hand in passing. ”Mere’s been through a lot, so I hear, but she should have told you sooner if she had any doubts. Gabe I… I know you loved her... okay I didn’t until now but now I know… it’s wonderful! But…” she sighed in frustration. ”I cant believe she doesn’t love you back! Who wouldn’t love you back? I mean you’re kind, generous, sweet, helpful. She’s a fool not to.” Emma looked from the wallpaper in Gabe’s hands to the blank white walls. ”Gabe…” she started, ”There wouldn’t be any chance you could possibly, put the wallpaper up now could you? I mean with a wand it shouldn’t take longer than fifteen or so minutes and I don’t have my wand and it would be a great help.” She watched with a small smile as Gabe rolled his eyes at her pleading request and set to work, unrolling, cutting and pasting strips of the wallpaper to the walls, skilfully with his wand. Meredith truly was silly, in Emma’s opinion to leave Gabe. He was one of the most easy going, wonderful men she knew, and having him return and their argument finally patched up, Emma was find remembering just how much she’d idolised him as a child. Even now she was seeing him more as an older brother than her cousin, as they easily fell back into the rapport they used to have… almost as if the argument five years ago had never happened. She rose from the rocker as he worked and started pulling blankets and supplies out of the boxes Gabe had enlarged, filling up the changing table, and making up the linen in the crib… setting out a few teddies. ”You know… if Meredith cant see what a catch she had, we need to find you someone better… someone who will appreciate you.” Emma turned on the spot, taking in Gabe’s quick and efficient wallpapering skills. He was almost done and it was starting to look like a nursery. ”Right, well at least that’s done. At some point I’ll get the crib pushed over by the window and the changing table in that corner there…” she hadn’t realised the hinting in her voice until she’d said it. |

”I know, I probably should have told you sooner but I only just figured it out for myself when she was breaking up with me,” he sighed and shook his head, turning his attention to the wallpaper in hand and started to put it up without argument. ”She never did tell me who it was she’d cheated on me with but to tell you the truth, I think it’s best she didn’t tell me. I’m not sure it would have helped things, had I known.” Gabe listened silently as Emma sang his praises, without response. She hadn’t done so since before their argument five years ago and although he doubted her words were wholly justified, it was somewhat a familiar feeling to have her idolise him as if back in the old day when they were younger. ”While your words may have some truth in them cous… and might I say they’re somewhat exaggerated, I guess if she just didn’t feel what I felt it wasn’t meant to happen… as much as I hate admitting that.” He smoothed out another strip of wallpaper and stepped back to admire his handy work so far. It really did look somewhat like Emma’s old nursery. The pair continued in a somewhat companionable silence for a while Gabe wallpapering and Emma sorting out the filling of the changing table and crib. Gabe watched her on occasion taking note on how tenderly and carefully she placed every item in the crib, laying the blankets just so, setting the teddies against the railings of the crib, sorting the diapers and wipes, filling the chest of drawers that had already been sat waiting in the room with baby clothes, neatly folded. It seemed like only yesterday that she had been the baby and he the toddler cousin peeking through the bars of the crib at her trying to teach her to play with her teddies and toys. She was so ready to be a mother and yet he could only see her as his little cousin. He felt a wave of protectiveness wash over him, as it once used to and smiled over at her as she turned making a suggestion. ”Someone better?” His smile faltered somewhat as he remembered only a few nights ago waking up not entirely alone, and having finished with the wallpapering, rolled up the spare paper, tossing it into a nearby box. ”Yeah, funny you should mention that… you see the thing is, the other night I went out to drown my sorrows and sort of wound up waking up the next morning with someone else… someone… not Meredith… turns out though that she actually works at Mungo’s as well.” He stepped forward pushing the crib to the spot in front of the window where Emma had pointed out. Might as well make himself useful while there, and while he was at it, he heaved the changing table into place as well. The nursery was rally starting to take shape and the heavy lifting as cleverly disguising his flushed features as he admitted what for the last couple of days he had refrained from mentioning to anyone else. ”He name’s Leslie and she’s new at work. Kind of cute… I guess. I uh… kind of kissed her the other day in the cafeteria and she kissed me back.” He snatched up a pair of fawn colored curtains for the windows over the crib and continued to keep himself busy by putting them up, even before Emma had had the chance to suggest it. ”See I don’t know what to do because I know I still love Meredith and I’m definitely not over her or ready to move on… yet that night I brought Leslie home, I wasn’t in my right mind… I mean I don’t remember even meeting her, just woke up with her there… but kissing her in the cafeteria at work… it just happened and I like it but I still felt guilty.” |

”Blimey! What is it with our family and falling in love after just a matter of months? Some family tradition, huh?” Emma mused allowed, watching gratefully as Gabe shifted the changing table and crib to the spots she had suggested. She nodded at his words, ”Probably was wise then that she didn’t tell you. Might help in the long run when you find yourself able to move on.” Emma had never realised how relaxing setting up a nursery would be, even though they were only originally meant to be moving the things into the room; she had been planning on setting it up closer to her due date. Nor had she realised how emotional she’d feel. Every teddy reminded her of growing up, every tiny little romper suit or baby t-shirt just made her feel all maternal and anticipate the arrival of the new baby all the more. There was nothing like the smell of fresh baby clothes she’s decided, inhaling the new smell of a creamy white cotton t-shirt, barely the size of a face flannel. Finished with setting things in their place in the crib and changing table, Emma pulled a large fudge brown teddy bear from out of the crib and settled herself slowly back down into the rocking chair, hugging the bear to her and rocking gently back and forth. ”Gabe’s new news, somewhat surprised her. Gabe was definitely not the type to go out and drown his sorrows over a woman, nor was he one to bring home another. He must have really been feeling down to do that. ”Wait… you work with her? Awkward? But if you kissed her… and she kissed you, surely there must be some chemistry involved. I mean you said she was sort of cute, so why fight it?” Emma pointed out and suggested. ”You’re not ready to move on from Meredith, so you don’t have to start anything official with anyone, have a bit of fun… see what’s out there.” It seemed that a bit of fun was what her cousin needed. From what Emma could gather from her aunt – his mother – and Gabe himself, he rarely made attachments whilst Healing abroad as he moved so much and didn’t want to have to sever any ties he made. Due to this he rarely went out and dated and Meredith had been one of his first steps forward since leaving Healer training. ”I know you still love her but seems to me that if you’ve allowed yourself to sleep with someone else… even if you were too drunk to remember and you’ve kissed this Leslie twice, some part of you is getting ready to start to move on anyway, even if the rest of you is a little reluctant to follow,” Merlin it felt good to flex those Oprah muscles again. ”Just relax, let things happen and if it does perhaps the rest of you will learn to move on as well.” Emma continued to rock back and forth in the ancient rocker, hugging the bear to her as she took in Gabe’s wonderful handy work, and yawned contentedly. Who knew that playing conductor and agony aunt, would be so tiring? ”You know, this doesn’t look half bad. You should have taken a job in DIY instead of Healing,” she stated, feeling her eyes drooping with the motion of the rocker. ”Look, head home, have something to eat and have an early night. It might make you feel better. Me, I’m going to stay here a bit and clear up a few things… and thanks.” Emma gave him a small smile as he nodded, handing her blanket out of one of the nearby boxes, obviously having caught on to the fact that she was dozing off on the spot then and there. Perhaps and little snooze would be alright, and when she woke up she could finish off the sorting and setting things in their places. With that thought, Emma’s eyes drooped shut as did her wakeful sent as she dozed off, not noticing Gabe slipping off out of the flat. When Mae finally had a day off, she decided it was about time to contact her old babysitter to find out how she was getting on. It seemed everyone was moving on in life and she wanted to know what Emma was up to these days. Holding a mug of hot chocolate in one hand, she pulled a black quill from a pot on her freshly tidied desk and began to write in flowing script:
After checking it a couple of times, she rolled the parchment and tied it with a blue ribbon, then sent with her grumpy old owl, Skitz. |

By the time Emma returned back to the flat fromt eh commonroom, Katie in one arm, the baby bag in the other, it was already early evening, and Emma was seething. She hadn't expected to see Tigs quite so soon after the Flourish and Blotts attack and she wasn't particularly happy about leaving Kevin alone with her. It wasn't Kevin she didn't trust, but Tigs. Emma was also sure that had she stayed a moment longers it would have been more than just warning sparks coming from her wand. Settling down with some work, curled up on the sofa, Katie babbling away happily to herself in the small cot she had pulled through into the living room, Emma tried to clear her mind. She ahdnt been working long however before an owl swooped throug the window landing on the back of the sofa behind her, dropping a letter in her lap. Emma ripped it open, eyes widening with a surprised grin as she saw who it was from. Emma could well remember babysitting for the young girl during her holdiays home from Hogwarts. Both their mothers had gone to Hogwarts together when they were little and Emma was only too happy for the babysitting job, to earn a bit of pocket money. Mae had been wonderful to look after from the age of about five to the summer she recieved her Hogwarts letter. By that point, Emma was getting ready to go away for Auror training. The pair had become friends during the time Emma babysat Mae but with Mae going off to Hogwarts and Emma emersed in training, theyd lost touch. Grabbing a sheet of parchement, Emma scribble back a reply, handing it back to the patiently waiting owl and watched as it swooped back out.

Mae was submerged in a worn book her boss had lent her when Skitz tapped on the glass to be let in. She opened the window and took the letter from him, stroking his head-feathers gratefully. He hooted then went back over to the corner to feed, ignoring the tabby cat which opened one eye lazily to watch him. You should really come and visit. We need to catch up. In fact I'm in all evening. "Hmm." Mae looked over at the clock and decided to catch Emma in case she didn't have another day off for a while. Grabbing a warm coat and scarf, she told Cleo to not bother Skitz (he was getting old and grumpier everyday) and apparated to an alley near Emma's home. It was even darker here, presumably because of the hour's time difference. She pulled on her coat and scarf, then wrapped her arms protectively around herself as she moved through the shadows. Eventually she came to the building Emma mentioned and paused nervously, before buzzing up. Whilst she waited, she looked around and soaked up the french atmosphere. |

A third lost in her word, a third wandering how things were fairing at the HQ and the final third wondering what a seventeen... eighteen year old Mae was like, Emma was somewhat startled to hear the buzzer to the flat sound, and crosse the room to buzz them up, opening the front door, hovered in the doorway to see who had buzzed up. The young woman who passed round the corner of the corridor in her direction, was at first unfamiliar to Emma but after a moment or two, it started to dawn on her and she grinned. "Well if it isn't little Mae Winters. Merlin! It really has been years. You're all grown up." Before Mai had a chance to respond, Emma had already pulled her into a bear hug, marvelling at how much she'd grown, alhough still several inches shorter than Emma tall frame. "Come on in. Make yourself at home. Would you like a drink?" Emma led the way into the living room. |

Mae opened her mouth to speak but her "Hello" was muffled into Emma's shirt as she got pulled into the hug. "Er, hi," she said with a small smile, removing her scarf and smoothing down her hair. "Hmm, I could murder a cup of tea. Thanks." Mae followed Emma through to the living room and quietly looked around it. It seemed so much homelier than her apartment. She waited politely, but slightly awkwardly, itching to pick up some of the photo frames to get a closer look at Emma's family. After a while, Emma came back out with drinks. "You've got a really nice place here. It looks like you're doing pretty well for yourself, What *is* it that you do now...?" she said, then sipped her cup of tea. |

At the mention of tea, Emma left Mae in the living room a moment or two on her own while she headed into the kitchen to fix up a pot, returning a few mintues later with two steaming mugs of tea on a tray, a pot of sugar and a small jug of milk. "I wasn't sure quite how you wanted your tea. What I sat for you, as I remember, you still had a preference for juiice and fizzy drinks." Emma watched as Mae's eyes drifted over the room curiously and smiled. "Thank you. This was always Kevin's flat but when we got married I moved inand we've just added bits here and there, really." She took a seat on the sofa, guesturing to the seat beside her, to let Mae know she was welcome to sit. "I'm an Auror. I guess sort of like the Muggle police but tracking down Death Eaters and those who break the law. Tough job but worth it. Exhilirating even. I'm just retuning from maternity leave. Which reminds me..." Emma took a quick sip of her tea, before crossing to pick Katie up out of her crib, and settling back on the sofa with he on her lap, turned to Mae. "I'd like you to meet Katie. My daughter." |

Mae sat down when Emma patted the couch and nearly choked on her tea. "Mum never told me you'd actually become an auror... Wow." She stirred her tea thoughtfully. "To be able to catch Death Eaters..." A flash of something (anger?) lit up her eyes briefly as she clinked the teaspoon on the china, then set the cup and saucer on the table. "Sounds worth it to me." When Emma sat back down with Katie, Mae stroked the little girl's warm, pink cheek. "She's beautiful, congratulations! How old is she now? Aww...Hello there." |

Emma couldn't help but grin at Mae's enthusiasm at the mention of her job. "As I said, it's hard work but I love it. It keeps me active and it's worthwhile." She was saw she caught sight of something, some glint in Mae's eye as she spoke of captuing DeathEaters, but Emma chose not to question it for the moment. Katie giggled as Mae stroked her cheek and waved her little arms about. "Thank you. I think she likes you. Care for a hold?" Without waiting for a response, Emma was already settling Katie carefully in Mae's lap. "She's nearly six months now... already. The apple of our eye. She's very nearly grasped sitting up on her own and she's a smiler... and a giggler." Emma took the chance of having her hands free to reach for her mug again for another sip. "So what about you? How was Hogwarts and how're things a home? What are you doing with yourself now?" Edited by Emma_D'Abugine, Nov 12 2008, 03:47 PM.

Mae smiled and nodded at Emma. She was about to say "Sure" but yet again was beaten to it by a bundle of baby being placed in her lap. She carefully placed her hands around Katie's tiny waist and began to bounce her up and down a little. "Six months, eh?" she said, looking down at Katie. "You're so grown up, learning to sit up, hmm?" She continued to occupy Katie by bouncing and moving her side to side gently, then glanced back to Emma. "Oh, home's home, you know. It's the same as it always was; Dad worries more about his garden and cases at work, whilst Mum's out all day or writing her next chapter." Mae chuckled a little as she thought of home. "As for me....I passed my exams, as I hoped to do. Mind you, I did work bloody hard for them. But I'm not in any magical field of work...Except I suppose I come across some magical pieces of work sometimes..." Katie giggled on her lap and Mae grinned. "I'm in publishing," she clarified. "Well, an intern at least. So what does Kevin do? I always assumed you'd marry a wizard and have a wizarding family...?" |

Emma watched Mae with Katie with a warm smile; she was a natual with kids, that much was evident and Katie seemed to be having a whale of a time bouncing up and down on Mae's knee. "She's growing up too fast. Six months have just flown by in a flash" She listened with interest to news of Mae's family; she was sure she hadn't seen them in almoss many years as it had been since she had last seen Mae. Emma knew that their mother's still kept in touch and on the occassion that Emma had popped home, occassionally she might have bumped into Mrs Winters. "You were always bright as a little girl. I always thought you'd get into Ravenclaw with your brains and detrmination. Which house were you sorted into in the end? The idea of Mae being in publishing, hardly surprised Emma. Mae had always been into books; before she could read herself, she'd have Emma read them to her. "You and your books," Emma rolled her eyes laughing. "That's excellent. Kevin's an Auror like me. He started at the French Auror HQ and now works over here. And one days, maybe Katie will join the family professions. So what about you? And family plans? A boyfriend you're not telling me about?" |

Mae grinned as Katie began to play with the scarf that she had at her side and tried to stop her eating it. "Oh, I did get sorted into Ravenclaw in the end," Mae replied with a nod and re-adjusted the little girl as she tried to squirm off her lap. "Ah. So you're a family of Aurors! I wonder what this little one might aspire to be one day, yes...Ack!" The scarf had somehow managed to find its way back into Katie's mouth, She tutted then chuckled as she took it back out and resumed the bouncing. She looked at Emma incredulously. "Me, family plans? I've never really thought about it! I mean, I don't even have a boyfriend. I have some pets that keep me company, though, like I mentioned in the letter. I'm not adverse to having a boyfriend, mind you, so if you know anyone my age that's intelligent and good-looking..." Mae mocked a thoughtful face then turned to Emma again. "...mostly good-looking actually, let me know." |

Curious as ever, Katie was intrigued by Mae's scarf, sticking it traight in her mouth, gumming the wool. She'd be teething soon,so Emma wasn't surpised. Mae was doing a wonderful job of keeping her entertained and gently removing the scarf from her mouth and distracting her. "As I said, I always new that's where you'd be sorted. I was a Gryffindor. So how did you find Hogwarts? I spent some of the best days of my life there. It seems so long ago." Emma continued to sip her tea, nodding as Mae commented on both her and Kevin being Aurors. "Well perhaps an Auror like her Mummy and Daddy or... maybe a Healer like her Unlce Gabe... well cousin Gabe. Do you remember my cousin? Just a couple of years older than me?" Emma listened as Mae mentioned she didnt have a boyfriend or any family plans so far. "Well you're young, there's still time. I had a boyfriend when I left Hogwarts and we were together a couple of years after we started Auror training but... well without going into detail, then didn't last." The situation with Matthew was fairly complex to go into. "And then nearly three years ago I met Kevin and now we've been married over a year. I'm not sure I know too many guys your age but I do know a couple of girls just out of Hogwarts. They might know someone." |

"Sounds good to me," Mae replied with a slight chuckle. She happened to glance at the clock across the room and griped. "Damn, I better be going as I've got work tomorrow." She squeezed Katie and told her to be a good girl, then put her scarf, which was slightly damp by now from baby slobber, around her neck. "It was nice seeing you again, Emma! Oh, and thank you for the tea. Be sure to keep in touch." |

Emma took Katie from Mae, so she could put her scarf and coat back on and shrugged at her thanks. "I should be thanking you for getting back in touch. You're more than welcome to pop round any time, really. I'm sure Kevin would love to meet you." She follwoed Mae to the door. "Oh, there's a Minsitry party held by the new Head of the Wizenmot we've been invited to and can bring a guest. Interested? It'd be a chance to get to know people. You don't have to come if you dont want to, of course, but thought Id ask anyway." |

Mae stopped as she opened the front door. "Oh, sounds good. I'll definitely come, if you let me know the specifics." She smiled and stepped outside. "Brrrr, it's freezing!" she exclaimed as the cold wind rushed about her, tangling her hair and whipping her scarf against her arm. She began to jump lightly on the spot as she wished the two goodbye, tickling the end of Katie's nose and patting Emma's arm. "Anyway, catch you soon."
