Adopting from shelters

Not really off topic, but how many of us adopt from shelters versus buying a purebred animal from a breeder? Do any of us obtain our pets from a pet shop?

I know that nowadays even rats, rabbits, and guinea pigs are adopted out by shelters--something I don't think I ever saw when I was younger.

So no one here has adopted any animal except for cats and dogs at a shelter?

I have a brother who adopted a rabbit from a shelter.

You know, most of my dogs when I was growing up just seemed to 'appear', although I think some of them were actually purchased by my father. He did buy a couple of hunting dogs from some of the local folks. Unfortunately for him, the dogs never seemed to do very well at hunting...

I've adopted a couple of cats from the local shelter, and just wish I could adopt more. However, three's the limit.

I remember that at least one of my cats, Jazz, just showed up one day. Another, Silky, was adopted from a shelter.

Jazz was a big, sleek black cat. I got him neutered shortly after he decided to stay at my house. Silky, a tiny, but gorgeous blue tabby, was spayed before the shelter would let me take her home.

working in a petstore many of my pets have been dropped off so I consider that adopting as I didnt pay money for them. we have gotten a rats, reptiles, cats, and a dog through my work. We also have gotten many from friends who know we love animals and take good care of them. I also have 1 dog from a breeder and many reptiles from breeders. But I do prefer to adopt of course.

I think a pet shop would be a fascinating place to work, although I think that sometimes it would be heartbreaking...

I would find it exceedingly difficult to work in a pet shelter, especially if the shelter was not a no-kill shelter.

One of my cats was adopted from a no-kill shelter, and she was so gorgeous, I don't think she would have stayed another day if I had not been there that day.

My other two cats were adopted from King County Animal Control. One of them was on her next to last day... :( . That was several years ago, and she is just a wonderful cat. One of her favorite tricks is to use my work boots as a scratching post! Apparently they are just big enough, and sturdy enough, to make her very happy :D .
