Prologue

Human kind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy’s first law of equivalent exchange.

* * *
A dark room lit only by a few small candles illuminated the tired faces of two young men. Both were around the age of fifteen, and their shared face features could easily identify them as brothers. Bags hung heavily under their tired eyes. A mountain of books were laid out in front of them on the table. Their heads poked in and out of different books and in correspondence their hands, like lightning, jotted down important facts and notes.

One of the men stopped momentarily and in one swift motion he brought the pile of books in front of him crashing to the floor. “Damn, Jonah, this is hopeless!” He yelled toppling the chair as he got up and began pacing back and forth across the room stuffed with an endless supply of books.

“Kyle, calm down,” Jonah mumbled quietly, eyes opening and closing, sleep pulling at his conscious. “Remember, equivalent exchange.” He dismissed his brother and turned back to his books.

“Jonah, you know as well as I do that hundreds of people are working just as hard if not harder than us.” Kyle said, clenching his jaw in anger. “The chance that our hard work will pay off is as good as anybody else’s.” He paused and calmed himself. “If equivalent exchange is actually real, shouldn’t our lives be perfect by now?”

The few moments of silence caused Kyle to glance over at his brother. He was passed out on the table his head still in the books all this time. Smiling in spite of his extreme fatigue, Kyle dragged his brother out of his chair and into one of the two beds in their room.

His bed looked extremely comforting and Kyle decided that he would need his rest for what was about to happen tomorrow. Lying in bed Kyle went over everything he learned and memorized. Without much difficulty, Kyle fell asleep his thoughts transferring over into his dreams.
