Boredom Strikes Again.
Ok, well, I'm trying to scratch a Dragon, and it has scales, but everytime I put them on it, it's goes to ****. I want to learn.

Anyone got something to help?

Since scales are so small, yet seem to all be slightly at different angles, I would use a considerable amount of dithering. Imagine a disco ball when shading, little squares in different positions of light.

Cool, I'll try that.

Anything else?

Just a side note to Ilex, unless you want a crazy sprite in which you can't see much, always make scales' outlines light.

Tell me the truth this time, why don't you.
Don't really draw them. Scales are usually very small and inimportant. Make occasional zigzags to indicate where the scales are, but shade the rest normally. Oh, yes, and dither too.

Yes I agree. You might want to use 1 simple shade and draw the slight outline of them, Then just add a highlight tone to each scale, making them each shine.
